RSC President’s Message May 2017 It is my privilege to serve as President of the
Richmond Ski Club for the 2017-18 fiscal year. I’ve been a member since 1996 and a Board member for the past 4 years. I’d like to let you all know a little about what
my goals are for the next year.
New venue for meetings - We’ve been at the Clarion for 2 years now and it’s time to move on. I want to move the monthly meetings to a location that is nice, convenient, and where people feel comfortable. We already have a few prospects and I will be communicating the final decision as soon as we work out a deal.
Control costs without raising dues - As Marcus posted last month, meetings are by far
the largest expense. When we started going to Richmond Country Club a few years ago, we got an amazing deal where they were able to provide much more food than in previous years. As costs increased, we have had an expectation of almost a full dinner at meetings, which was never the intent. Expect that this year we will move towards much lighter food at meetings (except for December) and hopefully have an opportunity for individual pur-chases at our new venue.
Bring back the nice Holiday Dinner at the December meeting -With saving money on
catering at the regular meetings, we will be able to do a nice December dinner. We have historically had an extra nice meal for December and I plan to bring that back.
More volunteers and assistants - Most of us on the Board work full time and a lot of us
run trips. There are a lot of people in the club who are willing and able to help out for specific tasks and I want to take you up on it. Please, if you are interested in organizing an activity, social, or serving on a committee please let me or any of the Vice Presidents know. Make things easier! - Look, the whole point of the Ski Club is to have fun. I want to look
for ways to make it easy for people to meet up with their friends in the club. I want to see more activities that are free or Dutch treat. I want to use social media and technology to communicate to our members about what is going on.
Looking forward to a great 2017-18 season. Think Snow! Mike Larson, President

Sunday Afternoon City Hike
May 21st at 1pm
May is a great time of year in RVA to explore the trails along the James River and have some outdoor fun! I have combined the pipeline/floodwall walk with Belle Isle and the Lower Buttermilk trail and the new Tyler Potterfield Memorial Pedestrian Bridge for a 5.4 mile hike. The new damn walk bridge is 1,600 feet long and approx. 17 feet above the rapids. It connects Manches-ter with Browns Island and offers amazing views of both the city and the James River. This will be an easy to moderate hike. For those that have not been across the bridge, this is a great opportunity to experience the roar of the rapids. It is has quickly become one of my new favorite go to landmarks for visiting friends and relatives. OUR ROUTE: We will begin in the floodwall parking lot off Semmes Ave, (near Legends) and walk under the Manchester Bridge to the walkover at the Suntrust parking lot. From the walk over we will cross the T’Pott Bridge to Browns Island and walk the pipeline. Then we will cross the Mayo Bridge, head across the south floodwall and explore the new ring sculptures and pathways. After we are finished exploring, we will cross back over the T’Pott Bridge towards Belle Isle. Once on Belle Isle, we will take the newly repaired footbridge across the river to the Buttermilk trail, and pick up the Lower Buttermilk Trail at the top of the stairs. This portion of the trail is very rocky in spots but manageable. Once we are back to the Suntrust parking area, we will head back to the parking lot to our cars. Optional drinks and snacks at Legends afterwards. HIKING DISTANCE: 5.4 miles (Approx. 2 hours depending on # of stops required and trail conditions) TRAIL TERRAIN: A little of everything – mostly paved, dirt, rocks, & gravel. Depending on the weather, the trail can be a little muddy and slippery in places, so dress accordingly.
DIFFICULTY: Easy to moderate. This is a good "first" hike for beginners. There are stairs
involved, rocky terrain, and a metal ladder to climb at the end of the pipeline. WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: Camera, sturdy, broken-in shoes; water, and snacks.
Meet in the floodwall parking lot Under the Manchester Bridge (9th Street), get off on the Semmes Ave exit, bear to the left, go under the bridge and turn left onto Semmes. You will see the Floodwall parking sign on
the left (close to Legends Brewery).
For more information or details please contact Brenda Bird at brenann0812@gmail.com (804-437-3609).
Please RSVP so that I have your contact information in case the hike needs to be cancelled for any reason. (I will walk this in the rain, but will cancel for a downpour , thunder , or lightning.)
NO PETS PLEASE!

Mountain Travel Symposium (MTS) 2017
What is MTS? It is a travel show that is held yearly at a various western ski resorts where ski club leaders from all over North America come to learn about the offerings of various resorts, tour operators, hotels, etc. This year 145 ski club leaders came to Banff, Alberta, Canada. Richmond Ski Club runs enough trips that we were able to send our President Elect, Mike Larson and also the VP of Trips, Steve Switzer. The cost of the trip is heavily subsidized by the vendors, so it is a great deal for club representatives. At MTS, we got to visit both Lake Louise and Sunshine Village ski resorts. Several of the vendors sponsored various meals and parties. The most important function is that one day we set up individual meetings with the vendors. Steve and Mike each had over 25 meetings, and it is set up like speed dating. Steve spoke with vendors from Colorado and Canada, Mike meet with everyone else. We were able to meet with several places where we plan to run trips next year as well as establish contacts with places we might like to go in the future. One of the big focuses of MTS this year was Japan. Several people from the Japan tourism agencies gave very interesting presentations. We learned that Japan has more ski resorts than any other country in the world (over 580!) and some resorts in the northern island of Hokkaido receive over 800 inches of powder a year annually. The winds come across Siberia and hit the Sea of Japan to pick up moisture, then when they hit the mountains it’s like wringing out a sponge. Richmond Ski Club is going to give serious consideration to running a trip there in 2019. Another major benefit to MTS is the opportunity to meet people from other clubs from all over North America. It is fascinating to learn about how big other clubs are, how many trips they run and how they do business. One thing for certain, Richmond Ski Club is in the top tier in terms of participation, number of trips, and organization. A large number of clubs only do one or two trips a year. They don’t have the same level of experience our trip leaders
have and their accounting is very basic. Richmond Ski Club has increased membership the last 3 years and we are in a really strong position.
