Napoleon Bonaparte1769-1821Born in Corsica1789 liutenant on
the French Army during the French Revolutionary War.
Promoted to General.
His victories made him very popular.
The rise of Napoleon1799 Napoleon led a
coup d’etat and became dictator.
1804 he crowned himself as emperor Napoleon I.
People accepted because they longed for a return to peace and normal life after the long period of the French Revolution.
Reorganised the government.Reformed economy.Created the Code Napoleon, legal code that
organized French laws.Founded the Bank of France as a central
financial institution.Established a French public educational
system.
Domestic Policy
Foreign PolicyDismissing the French
desire for peace, Bonaparte set out on a personal quest to dominate Europe.
Declared war on England in 1803 but was defeated in Cape Trafalgar.
Napoleon imposed the “Continental system” blockading England from trading with other nations of Europe.
Eventually, his relatives and military men ruled over foreign governments through the continent.
The rest of Europe fell under Napoleon’s rule as he won victory after victory on the continent.
Through treaties and alliances, Napoleon strengthened his European dominance.
Spanish War of Independence
In 1808 Spain revolted against Napoleon’s brother Josep I and drove out the French troops.
In 1812 Napoleon declared war on the Russians.
The Russians retreated, burning and destroying everything.
A combination of the severe Russian winter and the guerrilla harassment of the Russian soldiers on Napoleon’s force ended with the lost of over 2/3 of the French army .

Europe faces NapoleonAustria, Russia,
Great Britain and Sweden combined their troops to meet the French army.
Napoleon is defeated at Leipzig in 1813 and forced to surrender his throne.
The Empire of the 100 Days1815 Napoleon
escaped his exile and returned to France.
Armies from Great Britain, Prussia and Holland defeated Napoleon at Waterloo.
Napoleon was banished to the island of St. Helena, where he died in 1821.
