About the Lashup 14
Welcome to spring!
Although the weather isn’t quite cooperating as I write this, it is officially spring!
The warm weather brings an uptick in Detachment activities and I would like to
see more members volunteer to attend and help out at events. It’s a shame that
I see the same 5 or so members at everything we have scheduled. If you want to
get to know your fellow Marines better, this is the best way to do it.
Now that the Mid Winter conference is over, focus is turning to the Department
convention in Ocean City. As you all should know, I am the Chairman for the
convention and my planning process is reaching a fever pitch. We have gotten
our delegates in and I need everyone to send in registration for your guests that
you are bringing and to pay for your banquet dinners. I will not allow anyone to
come up to the Department Paymaster at the convention and decide they want
to attend the banquet, so make sure to get them in by the 8 April deadline.
We’ll be holding our awards and installation of officers at the April meeting, so
please plan on attending and bringing family/friends with you. This is a good
opportunity to also bring potential members to come and talk with the League
members to find out what we are about.
On a personal note, my son will be returning on the
night of the March meeting for 30 days of leave. He
has been over in Southeast Asia for three years, so
as you can imagine I am quite excited!! He will be
stationed stateside for the remainder of his Air
Force contract.
Fingers crossed for more sunshine and warmer
weather!

Comments from the Sr. Vice Commandant
Spring is here and the Detachment will once again be getting busier in the community. Bel Air First
Friday’s will be starting up in May. The Color Guard will be getting invitations to more events this
Spring. We will need volunteers to step forward and participate.
Do you have any ideas that the Detachment can get involved with? It is our membership that has
some great ideas. Let us know. We are open to try new things.
Thank you to everyone who continues to recruit new members and get the word out about the MCL.
We are closing in on the 100 member mark. I know we can reach this goal and surpass it. New mem-
bers can help breathe new life into our Detachment and could potentially become great volunteers.
The Department Leadership College will be held on 7 May 2016 at the Glen Burnie VFW. Anyone
looking to move into a leadership role or just learn more about MCL is welcome to attend. If you
can’t make the class, the National Professional Development Program (PDP) is posted for anyone who
wants to learn more on the National website www.MCLNational.org.
I hope to see you all at the Department Convention in Ocean City. The Detachment will pay for all
Delegate’s and Associate Members who want to attend. Everyone is welcome.
Semper Fidelis !

Eagle Scout Good Citizenship Award
Our next Eagle Scout presentation will be in Bel Air on April
3rd. Please contact Evie Remines if you would like to attend.
We have good participation in the Eagle Scout Good citizenship
Award program. We have 18 detachments in the Department

Almost 20 percent of top medals awarded secretly since 9/11
WASHINGTON — Nearly 20 percent of the military’s most-treasured medals have been awarded for
classified missions since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, according to data obtained by USA TODAY.
The secrecy surrounding more than 200 Service Cross and Silver Star awards reflects the reliance on special operations forces involved in classified missions to capture or kill terrorists and free hostages,
according to a senior Defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity because officials were not
authorized to characterize the commendations.
Last month, the Pentagon announced that officials are reviewing 1,090
awards of Service Crosses and Silver Stars awarded since Sept. 11,
2001 to determine if any should be upgraded to the nation’s highest
award for valor, the Medal of Honor.
Since 9/11, the 216 medals were awarded in secret for missions that
cannot be publicly discussed, according to the records.
One Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest medal awarded
to soldiers, and three Navy Crosses, the equivalent medal for sailors
and Marines, have been issued for courageous acts during classified
operations. The Navy awarded 112 Silver Stars, and the Army 100
more for undisclosed actions. The Air Force has not issued a Service
Cross or Silver Star in secret since 9/11.
We have supported our deployed troops by collecting 69 phones in the past month.
To date that is over 2540 cell phones. These phones are sent to a collection point
and exchanged for telephone calling cards which are sent to troops overseas. This
enables them to call family and friends at no cost to them.
If you have collected any phone donations, please be sure to bring them to the next
business meeting.
