A summer sneak peek: Discipleship 102 — Joining Jesus 0n His Mission
Ithappenedbeforeyouhadeverheardofme.Throughacongregationalre-newalprocessatanothercongregationIcametoseethatmynumberonemin-istrypriorityneededtobediscipleship.
ThatemphasiscarriedoverwhenmembersofImmanuel irstmetwithme.ItoldthecommitteethatinterviewedmeinDecember2015aboutpossiblybecomingyourVacancyPastorthatifIcamehereIwouldemphasizediscipleship.
Ifollowedthatupwhenwemetto inalizeaVacancyPastoragreementinJanuary2016.WhenIstartedthatposition,Ibegantoemphasizetheimportanceofdisci-pleshipintheeverydaylivesofallImmanuel’smem-bers.
WhenIwasinterviewedbythecallcommitteeonSep-tember19,2016,IagainremindedthemthatIwouldcontinuetoemphasizediscipleshipifIwerecalledtobecomeImmanuel’snextpastorandacceptedthecall.
Andthat’swhatIhavedone.Thispastspring,weheldaseriesofDiscipleship101classesonbothThursdaymorningsandThursdaynights.Wecompletedthis irst
DiscipleshipseriesonMay18th.Duringthoseclasses,severalofourImmanueldisciplesgrewintheirunderstandingofdiscipleship.
Yetthequestionsthatkeptcomingupinthosesessionswere“ButwhatwouldIsay?”and“WhatdoIdo?”
Weplantoaddressthosequestions—andothers!—withourDiscipleship102seriesthatwillbeginonSeptember14thandrunfortenweeks,endingtheThursdaybeforeThanksgiving.
Discipleship102willbesubtitled“JoiningJesusonHisMission:HowtoBeanEverydayMissionary”orJJOHMforshort.Itwillnotbeatraditionalclassorsmallgroup.InsteaditwillbeabeginningstepingrowingMissionalCommu-nitiesthroughwhichourdiscipleswillgrowinlivesofandpracticeofdisciple-ship.

Inthis irststepwe’llwatchadifferentvideoeachweekofroughlytenminutesthatwillsupplementappropriatechaptersinourJJOHMbook.We’llthenprocessourin-sightsasagroupusingaprovidedworksheet.Next,we’llbreakoutintosmallergroups,ifneeded,forthe“BeforeWeGo”session.Eachpersonwillbeaskedtosharetheir“A‐Ha!”Insightstoaction,thatis,whatyouthinkJesusmightbegivingyoutobelieveand/ordobecauseofwhatyoulearnedinthesession.Thiswillbethepartici-
pantsself-identi iedassignmentforjoiningJesusinthecomingweek.Finally,eachpersonwillbeasked,“HowcanIhelpyouinprayer?”Ourgoalwillbefordisciplestoprayfortheirneighboruntileveryone’sneedshavebeenprayedover.

What Does Jesus Mean to Me?
TomeJesusisaguide.SomeoneIcanlookuptoandcountontoleadmedowntherightpath.Heissomeonewhotellsmehowtoleadagoodlife.HeisanddoesallofthisbecauseHelovesme.
HewatchesmesintimeandtimeagainyetHestillcomesbacktoteachandloveme.Hediedonacrossforme,amiserablesinner.ButHedidmorethanthat.Hediedforthesinsofthewholeworld!Hemadeaway,sothat,throughHim,wecanreachaneverlastingparadise!AndallwemustdotogetthereisbelieveandtrustinHimasourSavior.Hesavedusfromeverlastingdeathanddespair.BecauseofHimwecanbehappyworshipinginheaven.ToHimwearenotjustpeoplewhosinagainstHimandhurtHim,weareHiscreation.Hecalledus“verygood.”HeDiedforusandHeisbringingustoheaveneventhoughwedeservetobeinhellforalleternity.
Deuteronomychapter31versesixsays:“Bestrongandcourageous.Donotfearorbeindreadofthem,foritistheL yourGodwhogoeswithyou.Hewillnotleaveyouorforsakeyou.”ThismeansthatnomatterwhathappensGodwillbewithyouandHewillalwaysforgiveyou,ifyouarerepentant.Itdoesn’tmatterhowmuchyousin,Hestilllovesyouandwillalwaysbethereforyou.Theonlythingyouneedtodoisaskandyouwillbeforgiven,trustandyouwillbesavedandbehumbleandyouwillbepraised.
Inmyownlife,whenmygrandmothergotcancerandpassedawayIwasverysad;butatthesametime,IwashappybecauseIknewthatshewaswithGodinheaven.ShewasinheavenbecauseofHismercyandbecauseHediedforusandforher.
IknewthatGodwaswithherandIknewHewaswithmegivingmecomfortinatimeofloss.IalsoknowthatIwillbewithheragainonedayinheavenbe-causeofthesacri iceofJesus.
Jesuswentuptoheavenlongago;butHeleftustheHolySpiritsothatHecouldguideusthroughlifeandbewithusthroughourtufftimes.Hispromisetousisthathewillalwaysbethereforusandneverforsakeus.ThisiswhatJesusmeanstome.T

Philippians4:13says,“IcandoallthingsthroughChristwhostrengthensme.”IbelievethatHestrengthensmeinmind,body,&spirit.TheApostlePaulwrotethiswhileinprisoninalettertoChristiansinthecityofPhilippi.WhatwasPaulactuallysaying?
Ihaveafeelingthatwhenthepeoplereadthelettertheywereprobablyprettyconfused.HowcouldPaulfeelstrengthenedbyChristwhileinprisonpersecutedbecauseofhisbeliefs?
IhaveseenonTVwhereathleteshavewrittenthisverseontheirgloves&ontheirshoes.ManypeoplemakefunoftheathletewhentheyusethisversebecausetheybelieveathletesthinkthatGodisonlyontheirsideinagame.Of-
tentimesthisverseisusedforits“literal”meaning.Athletesmistakenlyfeeltheneedtoreferencethisverseafterabigwin.ThiswasnotwhatPaulwastry-ingtosay.
Manypeoplethinkthisversemeansthatiftheysettheirmindtosomething&,withGod’shelp,itcanbeachieved.Maybeitisasportsgame,atestinschool,orevenlosingweight.Basically,theybelievethattheycanachieveanypersonalgoalbyfaith.Thedif icultthingformanypeopletounderstandisthatwedonotknowGod’sbigplan.Iamabelieverthateverythinghappensforareason.Manytimes,ourpersonaldecisionsin luencethatoutcome—rightorwrong.God’splanisonethatwewillneverfullyunderstand,butHewillalwaysbethereforustoseekhelpfrom.
IthinkthatPaulwasbasicallysayingthatweshouldbecontentineverythingthatwehave&ineverysituationofourlives.HedrewhisstrengthwhileinprisonknowingthatGodwaswithhim.SoevenifIampoor,IamrichinJesusChrist.Icannotwinthegameorcoulddopoorlyonatest,butstillknowthat
Jesuslovesme.WhenPaulmentionsdoing“allthings,”IthinkhemeansthathecanendureanysituationinhishumanlifebecauseheknowsthathisLordiswithhim.IlookatmylifeandrealizethatIsometimesputtoomuchpressureonmyselftowinagameordowellonatestinschool.IstillneedtoprepareforeverythingthatIdo,buttheloveofmyLordwillstillbetherenomatterhowIdoineach.Paul’struemeaningoftheversehasmoretodowithknowingthatwhenwehavebeenknockeddown,heisourstrengththatwillhelpusgetbackup.
GodhasgivenmeeverythingIneedinHisSonJesusChrist.Iwasbap-tizedrighthereatImmanuelonMay23,2004.Iwasjustamonthanda

small,evenwhenyoufeellikegivinguponyourself,Jesusnevergivesuponyou.
ThisreallymeantsomethingtomethisyearbecauseIalmostalwayshadtoleaveearlyfromclasstoplaysportsIenjoyed.Thisalsohappenedafewweeksagowithmyactualcon irmation,otherwiseIwould’vebeenupherewithmyothercon irmands.
IstartedtobecomestressedoutandworriedandIwonderedwhyGodchosethisplanforme.ThenIrealizednobodyknowsGod'splanforus.IstartedtogetcloserandclosertoGodthroughouttheyearandnowlookingbackatthisexperienceIwouldn’tchangemyplanandI’mgladGodchosethisplanforme.

The irsttaskwasreviewingthecurrentworshipofferingsandmakingarec-ommendationtotheBoardofTrustees.Aftermanymeet-ingsfromreviewingthecongregationalsurvey,requestinginformationfromotherlocalcongregations,andutilizingresearchfromtheSynodandotherChristiangroups,itwasdecidedandvoteduponunanimouslytocontinuewithatra-ditionalworshipandapraiseworshipatthecurrenttimes.Itwasalsosuggestedthatcombinedserviceswouldbelim-ited(onlyfollowingChristmas)inordertogrowbothser-vices.ThisrecommendationwastakentotheBoardofTrus-teesfortheirconsideration.
Thetaskthecommitteeiscurrentlyworkingonareviewofthepropertyandbuildingneeds.Asyoucanimagineasourfacilitycontinuestoage(itis50yearsoldthisyear!),manythingsneedtobeaddressed.Wewillsendourideasandrec-ommendationstotheBoardofTrusteesforreviewandhope

Be Ready
Itwasadrizzly,coldmorningontheMaasaiSteppeattheendofanunusuallylongrainyseason.WhenthesevenofussqueezedintotheLandCruiser,weknewitwouldbeanall-dayrideover looded,washed-out,sloppydirtroadstotheremotevillageofLaiseri.Ourtravelingexpectationsprovedtobeaccurateasweslippedandslid,passingvehicleslargeandsmallinthewater- illedditches,switchingbetweentwo-andfour-wheeldriveastheconditionswar-
ranted.
Thepurposeofourexcursionwastoaccom-panyPastorPhilipoandhisfamilytoLaiseritomeetwithandencourageEvangelistiCharlesinhisworkandreturntoourbasecampatLoolerathenextmorning.
WearrivedatLaiserilateintheafternoontobegreetedbytownsfolk“PalmSundaystyle,”withsingingandcheeringandwavingofgreen-leafedbranches.Wewereimmediatelyusheredintothetemporarystickandbluetarpchurchjustoutsidethevillageandtreat-edtoanhour-longmusicalcelebrationpro-videdbyachoirofresidentsyoungandold.
Thewelcomecametoanendjustasdarknessbegantofallandwehurriedtosetupourtentsnexttothechurch.
Momentslater,wereceivedwordthatEvangelistiCharles’wifeAnnahadjustdied.Amotheroftwoandonlythirtyyearsold,Annahadsuccumbedunex-pectedlytoanillnessfromwhichshehadbeensufferingforseveralmonths.Weknewimmediatelythatwewouldspendthenextdaycomfortingandgriev-ingwithCharles,whilepreparationswerebeingmadeforthefuneralthataf-ternoon.Darknessfell,andourspiritslaggedaswewenttoourtentsforthenight.
Thefollowingmorningtherainincreasedaswesatunderthebluetarpthatservedasthechurch’sroofandwatchedvillagersandneighborsfromthesur-roundingcountrysidegatheringinthecenteroftown.Charlessatwithus.Weknewhisgrief,andheknewourloveandconcern,despiteourlimitedknowledgeofeachother’slanguages.WeallknewthataroominheavenhadbeenpreparedforAnnaaswesharedourbeliefinthegoodnewsoftheGospel.WelearnedduringthedaythatCharleshadsoldallofhisgoatsandhadtakenonextraworktoprovideformedicationandcareforAnna.Hewasnowpenni-less.
Alldaylongthemistandraincontinued.Wewatchedtheyoungmenandold-erboysofthevillagedigadeepgraveintherockysoilandwaiteduntilAnna’scasketarrivedfromaneighboringtown.Atabout4:00PM,thecrowdassem-bledtohearPhilipo’smessageofhopeandforgivenessinJesusChrist.Ien-courageeveryonetoreadthefollowingpassageswhichwerePhilipo’stexts:

Threehourslaterthefuneralconcluded,andonourseven-hourdrivethatnightonthesametreacherousroads,Ihadplentyoftimetore lectonPhilipo’smessageofhope.AlthoughithadbeentailoredtoCharles’circumstances,itspoketoallofusthere—Christians,Muslims,andtraditionaltribalbelieversstandingintheraininasmallMaasaivillageinTanzania.
