The Internet of Things (IoT) Jim Shepard, ENP Marc Berryman, ENP Nate Wilcox
What is the Internet of Things?
• Internet of Things (IoT): A network of physical objects or “things” internet-connected devices embedded with electronics, sensors and software, able to collect and exchange data with other linked devices.
IoT Real World Applications
IoT Expected Growth
Pros • Devices able to collect and exchange data using
embedded sensors
• Allows constant communication and consistent quality control
• More information to assist decision making process
• Improved utilization of existing resources
• Information continually available to “spot” potential issues (analytics)
• Potential for privacy issues
• Others?
Cons • Harder to maintain confidentiality and
authentication of sensitive information
• Many competing protocols and standards
• Easily penetrated security gaps, lax authentication
• Bad actors could exploit networks by the number devices attacking plus the vast amount of data they each can generate
• Dependency on technology to make it work
• Cost of deployment infrastructure
• Immense amounts of data generated and bandwidth used
• Must utilize IPv6
IoT Pros and Cons
Major Competing IoT Technologies & Protocols
Infrastructure 6LowPAN, IPv4/IPv6, RPL
Identification EPC, uCode, IPv6, URIs
Discovery Physical Web, mDNS, DNS-SD
Data Protocols MQTT, CoAP, AMQP, SOAP, Node, XMPP, SMCP, STOMP, SSI, REST, HTTP/2
Device Management TR-069, OMA-DM
Semantic JSON-LD, Web Thing Model
Comms / Transport Wifi, Bluetooth, LPWAN, TSMP, NanoIP,
Multi-layer Frameworks Alljoyn, IoTivity, Weave, Homekit
IoT Pros and Cons
Hopeful Future • IoT will likely widely adopt Bluetooth Smart or IEEE 602.11ah (both power conservative) • IoTA – An emerging common language toolbox for IoT devices - Allows IoT devices to securely
store, sell and access data streams. • Tangle – a revolutionary new blockless de-coupled, distributed blockchain for IoTA
• MaM – Masked Authenticated Messaging
• Others?
IoT Emerging Trends
IoT Integration into NG9-1-1
IoT Integration into NG9-1-1
Motorola Solutions' Europe and Africa Public Safety Report
IoT Brainstorming
• Better Understanding of Advantages and Concerns • Refinement of baseline data flows • Best practices for integrating, managing, analyzing and
retaining IoT and related data • Others?
