BASIC: Beginner’s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.

FORTRAN: Formula Translator, was the first high level programming language software.

COBOL: Common Business Oriented Language.

SCAMP: Special Computer, APL Machine Portable.

APL: Named after the book A Programming Language, it is an interactive array-oriented language.

In 1911 IBM where the producer for punch card tabulating machines.

1930 produced the calculator.

In 1950s IBM 701 EDPM.

- had electrostatic storage tube memory.

Then IBM CEO which will go with IBM punch card tabulating machines.

In 1970 they produced the portable computers which are very close to the personal or desktop computers.

IBM attempted to move computing to individual users using the SCAMP project.

SCAMP is a desktop calculator, an interactive APL programming device.

In 1975 the IBM 5100 Portable Computer launched.

The Development of IBM Personal

Computer

In March 1982 the Portable Computer was withdrawn from marketing.

But the first personal computers were produced in 1978 in IBM Administrative Office.

IBM personal computers launched in 1981.

Weighed around 50 pounds.

Storage 16k to 64k.

extended model had 128k.

Price between $8,975 and $19,975 some were leased for 5,000 per month.

Size bigger than the IBM type writer .

Technical Description of IBM Personal

Computers

APL or BASIC — or both — programming languages.

Desktop has console application.

10 times faster than older models computers.

The capacity of the magnetic tape was 204,000-character capacity on 300 feet tape with 1/4-inch.

The diskettes could contain from 29 up to 130 million characters

The IBM 5110 had desktop unit, a keyboard and a 1,024-character displayed on the screen.

Diskette or magnetic tapes used.

Model 2 allowed only diskette.

The system was withdrawn from marketing between March 1983 and July 1984.

IBM 5520 included files processing enhanced softwares and other arithmetic functions.

Desktop Computer

The Data master was operated and checked out by users.

View screen. Uses input and output devices such as

keyboard, mouse and printer, which all attached to a desktop console.

Tow printers were also offered to the new pc type.

Maximum diskette storage of the new pc type was up to 4.4 megabytes.

BASIC: it was widely used during 1970-1980.

- It is an easy programming language to understand.

FORTRAN: one of the first programming languages.

COBOL: second oldest high level programming language.

All in all, PC was not the first thing that IBM produced, they did many things which made them think about this technology.

Many languages they discovered, some of which programmers still using them until now, but in more understandable techniques.

Summary

IBM company tried like any other companies to duplicate its success. It went through too many challenges and hard working and at the end it became one of the biggest companies in the world.
