Thomas Edison really played a large role throughout the history of audio. He invented many things including the phonograph.

1877

Thomas Edison invents the phonograph.

1878

The first music is put on a record. Jules Levy plays Yankee Doodle on his cornet.

1888

Edison improves his original phonograph by making an electric motor-driven phonograph.

1895

Marconi successfully experiments with his wireless telegraphy system in Italy.

1901

Experimental optical recordings are made on motion picture film.

1906

Lee DeForest invents the triode vacuum tube, the first electronic signal amplifier.

1910

The first live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera.

1913

The first “talking movie” is demonstrated by Edison.

1919

The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) is founded.

1927

“The Jazz Singer” is released as the first commercial talking motion picture.

1933

Magnetic recording on steel wire is developed for commercial use.

1935

BASF makes the first plastic-based magnetic tapes.

1940

“Fantasia” is released, made with eight-track stereophonic sound.
