The Harvest Is Past; Time to Celebrate
The month of November is a time to celebrate the harvest. Here in America we
call this celebration Thanksgiving. The purpose of the holiday of Thanksgiving is
to pause, reflect on the bounty of God’s blessing, and most importantly give
thanks. Do we really need a holiday to remind us to give thanks. The Bible predicts
that we will become an unthankful people. In Paul’s last letter to Timothy he warns
Timothy that in the last days people will be unthankful, I Timothy 3:1-2. Have you
ever noticed just how unthankful we have already become.
To illustrate this point let me tell you about my garden. As most of you know
both Patty and I enjoy gardening, well at least sometimes we enjoy it. We enjoy the
fresh vegetables during the summer months and preserve all we can for the winter
by canning and freezing. The one problem we have is that the deer, squirrels, and
ground hogs love our fresh vegetables as much as we do. My response is to
complain about how much they eat rather than be thankful for what is left. Why do
I do this? It is not because I am a bad person. It is because it is a part of our nature.
Our natural response is to complain about what was taken rather than give thanks
for what is left. This is the reason that we are admonished so many times in
scripture to be thankful. Since thankfulness is not a natural response we must
discipline ourselves to giving thanks. Here are just a few of the scriptures that
remind us to give thanks.
I Chronicles 16:8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Psalm 50:14 Offer to God thanksgiving.
Psalm 100:4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with
praise. Be thankful unto Him and bless His name.
Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which you were
also called in one body: and be thankful.
I Thessalonians 5:18 In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ
Jesus for you.
The words thanks, thankful, and thanksgiving occur in scripture 105 times.
Why so many times? It is because we tend to forget to be thankful. During the
month of November, rather than just giving thanks on one day let us discipline
ourselves to make every day thanksgiving day. We can do that by pausing and
saying each and every day, “Thank you Lord for Your blessings on me.” Have a
wonderful Thanksgiving. Yours in Him.

JESUS IS WORTHY! Joyfully HIS...
Most everyone in NC has been following the
horrific situation with record floodwaters
covering eastern NC and SC, as a result of
Hurricane Matthew. There are numerous
questions that will be asked for a long time
to come. I spent over 2 years working
rebuilding in Grifton after Hurricane Floyd
17 years ago. There were other Disaster
Response opportunities that occurred during that time. It
was my belief that I, and other team members I lead,
needed to “finish what we started” before moving
elsewhere. This brings me to the point of what I want to
discuss now.
Last October a massive flood, Carolinas Flood 2015,
occurred in portions of NC and SC. NCBM/ Baptists On
Mission, made a long-term commitment to work from a
Disaster Recovery Center in Johnsonville, SC, to provide
volunteer assistance to flood victims needing rebuilding.
Perhaps you heard from some members of our FBCS
team who went last year, regarding how we are blessed to
be able to go and serve Christ. We have a recovery team
trip schedules Nov. 10-12. Please contact Edsel Carter or
myself, if you would like to help.
This summer, another flood occurred in Nicholas
County, WV. NCBM made a commitment for “mud-out”/
cleanup projects, which has been completed. The
commitment for Disaster Recovery– rebuild is now in
place. The extent of any rebuilding involvement from
FBCS is uncertain at this time. Please keep the WV flood
victims needing rebuilding in prayer. Daylight hours are
limited, and winter weather will soon be upon those
mountains.
We are encouraged to seek the Lord’s will for Mission,
as we “Pray-Give-Go,” as the Holy Spirit leads. I close
with a verse to remind all men- Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy
thoughts will be established. Prov. 16:3 (KJV)

He (Jesus) must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30 (NKJV)
This scripture is now ever present in mind. Pastor
Eddie reminded us of this scripture in his John series
just recently. Yes, this is my prayer; this is my
intention in how I want to live my life; and its how I
want others to see me in my daily walk. You know,
since the music ministry is such a very high profile
ministry, this resolve makes the testimony in music
even stronger and believeable.
Selah… meditate on this.

It’s November and most of us are focused on getting
ready for a great Thanksgiving diner with our friends and
family. While we plan a big meal, there are families in
our community who can’t afford to have a small meal.
Our children have found a way to have fun and provide
meals to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
In October, each family represented in
the children’s department receive a set
of emoji cookie cutter to use with their
family at home. The kids were also
encouraged to sell at least one set of
cookie cutters to family or friends. How
does this get food for the food bank you ask? Well, for
every cookie cutters sold, 11 meals are provided to the
food bank. So far the kids have donated 286 meals to the
food bank. May we all find a way to bring the love of
Christ to our community during this Thanksgiving
season.
The jump start kit, worship rally kit and the two
starter kits are on order. They should all be here by mid-
December. I am so excited about the theme for next year
because I believe God shows His best work in the sky.
Teachers and volunteers stay tuned to the newsletter for
updates and be prepared to give start putting your orders
in to me for the materials you would like to have for next
year. The SKY is the limit for all the children we are
going to reach through this great ministry.
The GA Post Office opens Sunday,
November 26th. Send your Christmas
cards to your church family through the
GA post office for only 15 cents per card.
All money collected will be donated to
the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for
foreign missionaries. Please support the
GAs as we learn to support our
missionaries. The GA Post Office will be
located next to the Sunday School Office.
Last month I wrote an article in the Newsletter on why
more Christians need to say no instead of yes. I appreciate
all of you who read the article and communicated your
feelings about the article with me. I enjoyed the phone calls
and conversations and I welcome them more and more.
This month I want to lay out a few practical tips and advice
on how to say no.
Practice. Practice saying no. Go into the bathroom, shut
the door and practice looking into the mirror and saying no.
If you are married, ask your spouse to approach you and ask
you to help out and practice saying no. Make sure she
understands what you are attempting to do because she
might smack you if not.
Have rightly ordered priorities. The Bible teaches us that
our priorities should be God, family, and ministry. When we
get these priorities confused we say yes to activities which
take us away from our time with God and our time with our
families.
Understand that saying "no" to good things will free you
up to say "yes" to the best things. If you say yes to
everything that you are asked to do eventually your schedule
will be full and you will have to say no to something which
would benefit you, your family and could potentially grow
God’s Kingdom.
Understand that when you say "no" to someone it is not
personal. I fear that the majority of people are saying "yes"
in church not because they want to do something but because
they are afraid of offending someone if they say "no." May I
very nicely tell you to stop worrying? Stop trying to do
everything. Stop trying to carry everyone else's burdens
because truth be told they aren't yours to carry. Stop telling
yourself that you owe everything to everyone. Stop saying
yes to every favor and responsibility.
Saying no is biblical. In the New Testament there is a
principle of the Sabbath or a principle of rest. You need to
rest. You can't do everything. The Sabbath is God's gift to
us. If you are always saying yes you will miss out on much
needed rest. By the way, the statement, “I’ll rest when I’m
dead” is not Biblical.
In conclusion, I love you and I really do want what is best
for you and what is best for this church. Some of you
reading this feel over-worked and under-appreciated. Let me
be clear: YOU are more important than a program. I
would rather cut a program due to lack of volunteers
than lose another church member to burn out. When we
learn the art of saying no, we will discover a joyful life
where are priorities are in the right place and our church
continues to be a growing and vibrant church which reaches
our community.
