The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield had a change in venue for the last meeting which was held at the Viva Italia Restaurant in the heritage listed Old Flour Mill in Ipswich. Members enjoyed the friendly hospitality of the staff including excellent food and great service thus supporting Viva Italia’s reputation as one of the best Italian restaurants in Ipswich.

This Rotary club conducts meetings at local Springfield and Ipswich venues not just to support local business but also to spread the fellowship which is Rotary and promote the reason for becoming a Rotarian. This reason being the chance to do something for somebody else and to experience the fulfilment that comes from the process. It is a richly rewarding activity.

Though the club meets weekly at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, the club is flexible and likes to mix it up with meetings at alternative venues including other local Rotary clubs. Club President Keith Reinke said the club is certainly keeping very busy with support for many Rotary programmes and activities. More potential projects are currently being planned. As such, the club needs to attract more enthusiastic members to engage in these and other initiatives.

This year the Rotary theme is Light Up Rotary where members are encouraged to have fun in our club. Rotary is based on the idea that our service is more effective when we serve together with our friends and have fun. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield looks forward to a great year of service as we put our diverse range of plans into action to make a difference as we Light Up Rotary.

encouragement |noun: the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope.

When was the last time someone encourage you? It seems to be a bit of a dying art in our society.

Encouragement is more than flattery or compliments. It is something that, as the definitions states, gives support, confidence and hope.

If you’re anything like me, it can be difficult to take encouragement. Because, I think, encouraging words are mainly said at times when we are down and despondent, we can easily dismiss the encouraging words of others as mere platitudes intended to cheer us up or rally us out of a slump.

Recently, I had some encouraging words said to me. I smiled, nodded, and said ‘thank you’ in the right places, all the while, I inwardly squirmed and disagreed with their words.

You see, encouraging words always talk about what we are doing or have done right and it can be hard to square another’s perception of us with what we believe about ourselves.

I was reminded of how I reacted to encouragement when I encouraged someone else just the other day. This person possesses a skill that I don’t, and they were freely sharing that gift with others in a beautiful way. When I commented on it, however, my words were brushed aside and almost disregarded. There is a fine line between humility and not accepting that we are blessing others.

When we shun the encouragement of others, as I did on the inside and my friend did, we’re almost saying that what that person thinks is irrelevant or even wrong. We’re not allowing others the opportunity to encourage and support us, things which can inspire us to keep going or to continue using our talents and gifts for others.

I’ve talked before about the importance of being good receivers as well as givers. And this is a case in point. We need to receive the words of others graciously, accept that something we did or said made a difference in another’s life and allow their words to lift us up.

And when was the last time you encouraged someone? Have you told those special people in your life that you enjoy their piano/soccer/art/science skills? Or let your spouse know that you appreciate their input into your life? Have you smiled and said an encouraging word to that young mum in the shops with the screaming three year old? Or a harried teacher at the end of a long week? Have you told your kids’ sports coach that you value and support them volunteering their time for your kids and others?

We all need encouragement and the opportunities to give it are endless, if we only look around us and notice others. And watch how you receive it, too. Being gracious will in turn encourage the encourager to give more encouragement!

Now that the weather is warming up and we are starting to get some rain, we are entering tick season.

Paralysis ticks, naturally infest wildlife but they will also attach to domestic animals and occasionally people. Native wildlife is, in general, resistant to the toxic effects of the paralysis tick, but dogs and cats will rapidly develop paralysis as the toxin enters their system.

Paralysis ticks are more commonly found in areas where there is dense ground cover or bush, especially near water, but the expansion of suburbia into adjacent bushland means that paralysis ticks can also be found in clean, tidy backyards.

Ticks attach firmly to the skin of our pets and inject a toxin as they feed. Signs usually appear about 24-36 hours after attachment of the tick.

The most common sign of tick paralysis is weakness or wobbliness in the hind legs. This weakness progresses to the front legs and advances until the pet is unable to stand. The muscles of the throat are affected also. This causes a change in your pet’s voice and difficulty swallowing, which leads to your pet being off food, and in some cases, food or water may be inhaled instead of swallowed, which can cause pneumonia. If the tick paralysis is not treated, eventually all muscles will be paralysed, breathing will stop, the heart will fail and death will occur.

Treatment for tick paralysis involves hospitalisation and the injection of an antitoxin. This rapidly neutralises tick toxin in the blood, but is much slower to get into the nervous system, so it can take some days to reverse the signs of paralysis. In severe cases pets may also need oxygen and intravenous fluids. The success rate is high if tick paralysis is treated early.

As with most diseases, prevention is better than cure. There is nothing available to stop ticks getting on your dog or cat, but using a tick collars or spot-on and spray products on your pet will reduce the likelihood of a tick attaching, and if one does attach, growth will be slowed and the tick can be removed before it can cause serious illness.

Because none of the preventatives are 100% effective, it is also very important to physically check your pet for ticks every day. Run your fingertips through the coat, systematically checking the whole skin surface. Most ticks will attach around the head, neck, chest and shoulders but they can attach anywhere. Remember to check carefully under the collar. Checking every day is important because it means you have a better chance of detecting growing ticks that were difficult to feel initially due to their small size.

If you do find a tick, we now know it’s best to pull it straight off. Importantly, do not apply kerosene or other poisons to the tick – this will only irritate your pet’s skin, may be toxic to your pet and will cause the tick to release more toxin as it dies slowly.

Your pet can develop signs of paralysis up to 48 hours after a tick is removed, so watch closely for any problems. If you notice any signs of wobbliness, change in voice, vomiting or decreased appetite please consult your vet immediately to make sure your pet doesn’t become a victim of tick paralysis this summer.

For 12 year old Springfield Lakes resident, Holly, soccer is a family affair. Holly started playing soccer when she was five years old and dreams of one day becoming a Matilda (Australian Soccer player).

Holly started playing for Springfield United FC when she was eight years old and was the first player to register for the club.

In October last year, Holly was selected for Olympic Football Club, U13 National Premier League Club. Playing at this level, Holly trains three nights a week and plays one night.

“This doesn’t just need commitment on her part but on us too,” said mum Pye. “She has a brother and sister who both play soccer as well. So, juggling schedules is a main priority in our house!”

Earlier this year, Holly was selected for the Met West Soccer team. Travelling to Mt Isa, Holly had a successful carnival and was rewarded by selection for the U12 Queensland School girls team, that will travel to Bendigo, Melbourne, later this month.

“Holly knew that I made my first Queensland team at age 14,” said Pye. “When she was eight she made a bet with me that she would make a Queensland team earlier than I did.

Ekka this year. Joanne Borgatti, Springfield based fashion and couture designer and

Jolanta Szymczyk, Bellbird Park’s textile artist were part of the Horti-Couture fashion event, a brainchild and passion of Bettina Palmer, driver behind the regular Mt Coot-tha Garden’s based Botanique event.

With Nick Goodridge (www.nickreative.com) of Springfield Lakes, behind the lens capturing this spectacular event, the event is making its mark in the Brisbane artistic scene. Nick and Jolanta are not new entrants with both being involved in the event last year where Jolanta secured a first prize in the wearable art section.

This year, Jolanta’s entry won 3rd prize in Best Use of Plant Based Material category. Jolanta’s 100% pure merino garment was imprinted with eucalyptus leaves, leaving nature’s permanent mark on the garment.

The Creative HeART group has been very active since its first public meeting in February this year. As a rule, the group meets at night time, every second Thursday each month in Orion Shopping Centre’s Community Room. The October meeting will be run from the University of Southern Queensland’s premises.

On Saturday 8 November, Westside Community Care will be holding its 18th annual Greater Springfield Run For Life at the Robelle Parklands.

This year promises to be the most exciting event to date, with not only the Run for Life but the Battle of the Bands and Lanterns in the Park all taking place on the day.

The Greater Springfield Run for Life has been one of Springfield’s premiere community sporting events over the last 18 years; one that has continued to grow, with over 1000 participants last year. Organisers would love to double the participation this year and in addition raise much needed funds for Westside Community Care and local chaplaincy services.

Also, the 2014 Run for Life will be introducing the Telstra Springfield Glow 5K Fun Run. The day will also feature a 10km Run, the Springfield District Vet 2km Dog Walk, and a 1km walk/run.

Throughout the afternoon, Springfield’s 7th annual Battle of the Bands talent competition will be taking place on the Robelle Stage. Local talent will compete with each other to take out the title of Best Band of Springfield.

The day will end with the Lanterns in the Park market, where families can enjoy rides, stalls, food and the spectacular fireworks which will finish off the day at 8pm.

For this month, with the start of spring and warmer weather, a little bit of fun by way of a small quiz.

First, I want you to take a sheet of clean paper and write down your three favourite creatures (animal, insect, bird or fish), one beneath the other with a gap between them.

Next write down under each animal the things about that animal that appeal to you. As many as you like.

Then look at the bottom of the page for the answers.

Spring is here and perhaps it would be a good time to remember some of the general things that make us happy. Happiness leads

to success. Most people think that if they become successful, then they’ll be happy. But recent discoveries in psychology and neuroscience show that this formula is backward. Happiness fuels success, not the other way around. When we’re positive, our brains are more motivated, engaged, creative, energetic, resilient and productive.

It has been said we ‘can fake it until we make it’ so perhaps we would get off to a good start by smiling more often. Sharing a laugh with family and friends helps our brains release endorphins that help us feel happier, less stressed and more connected to others. Perhaps that’s why it’s easier to laugh with a group than by ourselves, laughter is contagious. So cultivate your sense of humour and seek out people and situations that make you laugh. You’ll be happier, and healthier, for the experience.

Happiness doesn’t just happen - it comes from thinking, planning and pursuing things that are important to us. Scientific research shows that setting and working towards goals can contribute to happiness in various ways, including:• being a source of interest, engagement or pleasure.• giving us a sense of meaning and purpose.• bringing a sense of accomplishment when we achieve

the goals which builds our confidence and belief in what we can do in the future.We all know the expression ‘treat others as you

would wish to be treated’ but perhaps it also need to be reversed. We give ourselves a hard time for things we would be compassionate towards others. Think of a close friend failing to get a promotion. We don’t tell them ‘you’re no good’ or ‘you’ll never get anywhere’. Chances are we’d say ‘you can try again next time’. Show the compassion that you would show to others to yourself.

In focusing your thoughts, consider changing how you think about the past. Instead of dwelling on mistakes and unhappy memories, gently let them go and focus on memories of times when you felt happy, fulfilled and successful. You can’t change the past, but you can keep it from holding you back. So when you choose to recall a memory, make it a good one.

McHappy Day® is coming up and Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) is calling on Greater Springfield community groups to get behind the big day by forming a ‘Bucket Brigade’ on Saturday 18th October, to help raise more than $3 million for the charity.

The event will take place at McDonald’s restaurants in Greater Springfield and local groups including local businesses, dance groups, the fire brigade and ambulance services, are encouraged to get involved by volunteering their time to help collect donations in fundraising buckets at their local restaurant on the day.

This year’s fundraising target equates to over 23,000 nights’ accommodation in a Ronald McDonald House for families with seriously ill children. Funds raised on the day will go towards a range of RMHC programs including Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, the Ronald McDonald Learning Program and Ronald McDonald Family Retreats Program.

“One in eight people either have been or know someone who has been affected by childhood illness so I am sure there are people in the local community who can relate to the heartache and stress of having a child with a serious illness,” said David Robinson, licensee, McDonald’s Masters Springfield.

“The Bucket Brigades are a simple and easy way for people in the community to get involved and help families with seriously ill children. We are very passionate about reaching our target of $3 million this year.”

There are currently 14 Ronald McDonald Houses in Australia but sadly hundreds of families are turned away each month as there is a shortage of rooms to accommodate them all. All funds raised on McHappy Day goes directly to RMHC, and are used to help these Houses expand in order to help more families remain close during challenging times.

With over 150 dogs and puppies available to adopt from over 30 different animal welfare and rescue groups, there is sure to be a pet to suit your lifestyle.

Last year’s Big Adopt-Out saw over 100 canines find their furever home. RSPCA Qld Rehoming and Rescue Coordinator Nicci Exposito said the Big Adopt-Out was a good example of what collaboration can do in saving animals’ lives.

“RSPCA Qld works closely with many rescue groups Australia-wide. By coming together for the day, we not only saved the lives of animals adopted on the day but forged stronger links between all the groups,” said Nicci.

If you are seeking a second furry companion, you can bring your own dog to the Big Adopt-Out so that your pet will be able to meet a potential new companion on the day to ensure a happy, furry relationship. Please be mindful that there will be lots of dogs at the Big Adopt-Out, so please only bring your pooch if they are looking for a long-term relationship.

Last year, Cynthia attended the Big Adopt-Out, looking for a new friend for her Border Collie, Bandit. Stopping at the RSPCA stall, Cynthia spotted Tori the Shih Tzu cross.

“She looked up at me and it was like my heart had been struck by a thunderbolt. I was smitten.” Cynthia then had time to introduce Bandit to Tori. They quickly warmed to each other and now the two are inseparable.

Hi all and welcome to the monthly column of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. How lovely to see some green grass and cheerful Spring gardens after the recent rain, hopefully we will not to have wait so long for the next decent rain event.

September’s speaker was Mme. Claude Tranchant, author of ‘Boots to Bliss’, who, at the age of 64, walked on her own from the Burgundy region of France to Muxia in north-western Spain following the ‘Way of St James’. Claude, who is regarded as a 21st century pilgrim, shared many of her amusing and exciting experiences with us. Copies of her book, which records her travels, were available for sale.

The photo shows some of us enjoying a game of boules after our August breakfast barbeque in Robelle Domain. Hopefully the kilojoules expended were greater than those consumed!

September’s excursion will be a tour of City Hall on Tuesday 23 September at 10.30am followed by time in the City Hall Museum and lunch in the city. We will meet at the Shingle Inn in the City Hall foyer at 9.30 approximately, so there will be time for coffee before the tour for those who would like it. Be aware that there is quite a lot of (non-strenuous) walking involved in this activity so please consider your fitness level before registering. We will travel by train for this outing, details are available from Bron on the number below.

This month’s pub lunch will be at Springfield Tavern (opposite Coles) on Monday 15 September. No definite decision has yet been reached as to whether this venue is preferable to the one we have been patronising or whether we should alternate month by month.

Our regular coffee morning at Robelle Domain will be on Friday 19 September.

The past month has been a very busy time and also one of great success for College students. By now, all students across the State who sat the 2014 NAPLAN Tests should have received their Individual Reports. It is well understood that NAPLAN results provide just one indication of student progress, at one point in time, and need to be viewed in this context. That said, NAPLAN Results provide not only parents with an understanding of their child’s progress and but also schools with important comparative cohort data.

As reported in the Weekend Australian, June 21-22, The Springfield Anglican College students ranked 49th across all schools in Queensland based on the 2013 NAPLAN Results, which is an extremely pleasing achievement for a non-academically selective school.

It is also pleasing to see that the 2014 NAPLAN Results have improved significantly over 2013. In all four cohorts, and across all five areas of testing in each year level, the College Mean exceeded the State Mean by a considerable margin; on average 37 points above the State Mean.

As examples of these very good performances, in Year Three, the highest possible Achievement Band in each of the five areas tested, is ‘6 or above’. In ‘Writing’ 48.2 percent of College students achieved in this Band, compared to 20.9 percent across the State. In Year Seven the top Achievement Band is ‘9 or above’. In ‘Numeracy’ 42.2 percent of College

students achieved in this Band, compared to 10.1 percent across the State.

Less well known about the College is the breadth of extra-curricular opportunity available to students and the successes of students in these areas.

We have had some outstanding achievements of late, including that of Year Eight student Louis Dobbelaar, who has just returned from the USA where he competed in three Golf Tournaments. Louis was in top form and finished Runner Up at the San Diego Junior Masters and the US Kids Golf World Championship at Pinehurst. Louis also tied 14th in the Callaway World Junior Championship in San Diego.

Year Nine student Scarlett Guest-Carver has also been selected to compete in open company at the Equestrian Australia Australian Championships in September. This is an amazing achievement for Scarlett and will see her compete against Olympian and World Equestrian Games riders.

In addition, students Amy Bentley, Shantay Morris and Shilah Morris have also been selected to participate in the National Schools Equestrian Championships in Victoria in September, with Amy recently named as Captain of the Queensland Team.

The College Primary Cheerleading Team also placed Third at the National Championships held on the Gold Coast in August.

These achievements are but a small fragment of the outstanding accomplishments made by College students.

There was no guest speaker for 6th August, so we had our meeting as usual which was then followed by morning tea.

Andrew Bull then showed us a video of the Maleny trip to King Ludwigs Resturant which was very interesting as some of our members joined in with the entertainment by playing musical instruments and doing the Hat Dance. The food was good and we even had a visit from Santa with Joe Bailey as Santa’s helper. It was an enjoyable day out.

13th August was a quiet morning as some of our members were away on the Rockhampton trip. We played games, had a little sing along and enjoyed the morning.

20th August was Seniors Day. Stories were shared with us about the trip and everyone enjoyed it very much. Val and Irene, you both must have worked very hard to put on such a good trip as everyone said how well planed everything was.

We are now into September, with the weather getting warmer. One of our members is going to Europe for her 70th birthday; we hope you have a great time!

Children of Goodstart Early Learning Camira are looking forward to the Global Cardboard Challenge being held on 9 October. The Global Cardboard Challenge is an initiative of the Imagination Foundation whose mission is to “find, foster and fund creativity and entrepreneurship in children around the world to raise a new generation of innovators and problem solvers who have the tools they need to build the world they imagine.”

The children at the centre will be encouraged to build anything they can dream up using cardboard, recycled materials and their imagination.

Residents are invited to participate in the fun by donating cardboard and any other useful recycled items. Holders of a Bluecard are also welcome to join the children at the centre on the day from 9am.

Goodna/Redbank BranchWelcome to the spring edition of the Greater Springfield Times. Seniors throughout Queensland have recently celebrated Seniors Week. This is a

week set aside to acknowledge the valuable contribution older people have made to the community and will continue to do; a great time to get together for some fun.

The Goodna/Redbank Branch members celebrated the day with a delicious high tea and entertainment provided by the all male Apollo Choir. They entertained with songs from the 50s and 60s and finished with a beautiful rendition of Eric Clapton’s ‘Tears from Heaven’; thank you Jackie.

It is that time of the year when National Seniors branches conduct their Annual General Meetings. This branch will have its AGM on Tuesday 16th September. We encourage members to nominate for the committee to ensure this club can continue it’s important role in the community. A sausage sizzle will be held after the meeting to give everyone a chance to socialize.

Don’t forget the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers tour on 23rd September, bookings are still being taken.

The Coffee Club will meet on Wednesday 1 October at the Citiswich Café Ebbw Vale at 10.00am.

Ipswich Orchid Society Inc. in conjunction with Ipswich & District Bromeliad Society Inc., will be conducting their Spring Garden Spectacular on 4 and 5 October at Silkstone State School, Prospect Street entrance.

The display will be open on Saturday from 8.30 am – 4.00 pm, and Sunday 8.30 am – 2.00 pm. Admission is $3 while children under 12 are admitted free.

The Garden Spectacular will include magnificent displays of orchids, bromeliads, African violets, hibiscus begonias and Australian plants. There will be lace-making demonstrations, a well stocked craft stall and floral art sales.

An information area will be provided for patrons to obtain advice and information on growing plants. Throughout each day, there will be potting demonstrations and informative talks.

A large area has been assigned to plant sales with orchids, a wide range of bromeliads and other plants for sale.

Light refreshments will be available throughout the show and arrangements can be made for morning/afternoon tea for group and bus trip patrons.

As in the past, the event will support a local charity by way of a donation. This year, proceeds will go to Ipswich Meals On Wheels who provide meals for people living in the Ipswich area.

The recent minor incursion of the Spike Top Apple Snail in Spring Lake has highlighted the need for the local community to be aware of the dangers of owning imported animals. In a domestic aquarium, these snails, which are a non-declared pest species, make a lovely addition to the home and present no danger to the community or our local environment. In our local waterways it is a totally different story. Residents need to be aware that it is unacceptable to introduce foreign species into our waterways.

Ipswich is expected to be Australia’s first city to use Finding Rover, the facial recognition app for dogs for its animal management program. RSPCA Queensland originally launched the app in Australia and residents will be able to list dogs as missing, found or simply upload the image as an extra protection against the unexpected. Staff at council’s pound will also be integrating the app into their lost dog processing systems and using it to reunite families with their pets faster. The app can be downloaded onto any Apple or Android phone.

With the current Ageing Stronger, Active Longer program at Springfield Lakes in its final stages, council is interested in obtaining feedback from the local community on this program and other activities local seniors would be keen to see council implement. Ageing Stronger, Active Longer is a popular and long-term part of council’s seniors program. It has been running for the past eight years and allows participants to learn all about the benefits of making healthy, nutritious choices and engaging in regular physical activity.

In partnership with Riverview Neighbourhood House and Leichhardt One Mile Community Centre, council will offer a fun-filled activity program in Ipswich during the September-October school holidays for young people aged seven to 17 years. Springfield resident, Chris O’Dea, is among four West Moreton Anglican College students to achieve international success at SKYSEF 2014 in Japan last month.

The four Year 11 students travelled to Shizuoka in Japan to take part in a four day international science competition called SKYSEF 2014 (Shizuoka Kita Science and Engineering Forum).

This is an annual event involving secondary schools from around the world. This year, there were more than 200 students representing 26 schools from eight different countries (Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Iran, USA, Italy and Australia).

The WestMAC team members, Chris O’Dea, Nick Johns, Nick Gill and Aidan Hughes, were selected on the basis of demonstrated high level achievement in at least two senior science subjects. Many international students at the competition were from Super Science High Schools, and many of the schools represented were national science project winners in their own countries, so the standard of science was very demanding.

WestMAC Head of Science, Mr Warren Butler, said “I am delighted to announce that the team led by Chris O’Dea tied for 1st place and the team led by Nick Gill achieved outright 3rd in the international joint project against 21 other teams.

“This success is the result of almost four months of weekly after school preparation and hard work, and I congratulate the students for their outstanding results. The WestMAC name is certainly standing tall on this international stage.”

September school holidays are just around the corner and there’s plenty of activities to keep kids entertained and keep mum and dad stress free.

One exciting school holiday event is the Waterway Fun Day at Joseph Brady Park, Barellan Point on October 3.

Residents of the greater Springfield region will have the opportunity this month to combine a night out with helping anti-human trafficking organisation Destiny Rescue.

Hosting a charity screening of new movie Freedom, at Limelight Cinemas, Riverlink Shopping Centre, Ipswich, Destiny Rescue will raise awareness of the ongoing issue of human trafficking that still exists today despite the abolishment of the slave trade in 1833.

Starring Oscar Award winning actor, Cuba Gooding Jnr, Freedom is the story of two men separated by 100 years united in their search for freedom. Inspired by real people and actual events, the story of Captain John Newton and his influence that would resound through the ages, is brought to life on the big screen.
