THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY

SPIRIT

After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

ACTS 1:3-5

For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."(NIV)

2. THE POWER TO ACCOMPLISH GOD’S COMMANDMENTS

ACTS 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."(NIV)

LUKE 24:49

I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."(NIV)

3. PERSONAL EXPERIENC

E

ACTS 19:1-2

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them,

ACTS 19:1-2

"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."(NIV)

4. A PART OF FOUNDATION OF FAITH

HEBREWS 6:1-2

Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance

HEBREWS 6:1-2

from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.(NIV)

EVIDENCE OF ONE WHO HAS

BEEN BAPTIZED BY THE HOLY

SPIRIT

Acts 2:1-4

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Acts 2:1-4

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.(NIV)

Acts 10:44-48

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.

Acts 10:44-48

For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have

Acts 10:44-48

So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.(NIV)

Acts 19:1-6

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive

Acts 19:1-6

"John's baptism," they replied. Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.(NIV)

RECEIVING THE BAPTISM OF THE

HOLY SPIRIT

1. TURNING AWAY FROM SIN AND HAVING FAITH IN JESUS

RECEIVING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

ACTS 2:38-39

Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

ACTS 2:38-39

The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."(NIV)

2. ASKING THE LORD JESUS

RECEIVING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

LUKE 11:9-13

"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened

LUKE 11:9-13

"Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"(NIV)

3.STRENGTHENING OF OUR FAITH

RECEIVING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

JUDE 1:20

But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.(NIV)

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT

TONGUES?

WHEN SOMEONE SPEAKS IN TONGUES PUBLICLY,THERE SHOULD BE AN INTERPRETATION.

1

1 CORINTHIANS 14: 27-28

27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two-or at the most three-should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.

1 CORINTHIANS 14: 27-28

28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:23

So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

SPEAKING IN TONGUES STRENGTHENS THE PERSON SPEAKING NOT THE CHURCH.

2

1 CORINTHIANS 14:4-5

4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:4-5

5 I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:4-5

For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:18-19

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:18-19

19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

NO

DO YOU HAVE TO SPEAK IN TONGUES TO BE FILLED WITH

THE SPIRIT?

BE FILLED WITH THE

SPIRIT

GALATIANS 5:16-17

16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

GALATIANS 5:16-17

17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.

GALATIANS 5:16-17

They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

EPHESIANS 5:15-18

15 So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.

EPHESIANS 5:15-18

17 Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

EPHESIANS 5:15-18

18 Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.

WHEN YOU ARE DRUNK,

YOU ARE UNDER THE INFLUENCE

GALATIANS 5:25

25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's leading in every part of our lives.
