Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
“. . . I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in
love, a god who relents from sending calamity.” (Jonah 4:2)
Have you ever gone through a time of disobedience towards God? Well, Jonah was a prophet
of God who decided he did not want to prophesy for the Lord; at least not to Nineveh. God want-
ed him to deliver a message to Nineveh to warn them against impending destruction if they did
not turn from their ways. Jonah had developed a hardened heart toward the people of Nineveh.
He did not really care if they repented or not; in fact, he preferred that they not repent. So, rather
than travel to Nineveh and deliver the message, he hopped on a boat in the opposite direction. I
wonder if there are individuals or groups of people that we have grown hard hearted toward and
really do not care if they are saved from destruction or not. Now, for Jonah you probably know
the rest of the story. He was swallowed by a great fish and spent a few days thinking about his
decision.
There is a place where we all will obey. What circumstances must take place before we be-
come obedient? For some of us, it requires a big shakeup. For Jonah it took some highly unusual
and shocking circumstances before he became God’s man to save 120,000 people. God chose
him to be used by God, and God did not give up on him.
God understands our disobedient heart. God sees what we really are; yet God gives second
chances. God gave Jonah a second chance, and he gave the people of Nineveh a second chance.
That is a lesson from a heavenly Father who specializes in second chances. Have you blown it
somewhere along the way? Have you disappointed someone close to you? Well, God is the God
of second chances. All we must do is acknowledge our waywardness and turn around. God will
restore. God will give grace. Just ask Him.
As August arrives and vacations begin to wind down we find our church calendar-of-events
filling up again. This month we have both the Men’s and Women’s cookouts, Homecoming, the
Worship Committee Meeting, the VOW Committee meeting, a meeting about the Bethlehem Star,
and in preparation for Charge Conference we will have a Staff Parish Relations Committee
meeting and a Nominations Committee meeting. I am sure that I missed something, but the point
is from now until after Charge Conference we will be very busy. I just want to remind you to
schedule some time in each day and each week for quiet time with the Lord so that you can obey
Him and serve Him as He has commanded.
Grace and Peace, Pastor Dale

WOW!!! Vacation Bible School was a blast. "Rolling River Rampage - Experience the Ride of a Lifetime with
God" was great fun. The Key Bible verse was, "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you." Isaiah 43:2.
God is always with us - we are never alone.
The first evening was started with a "Homeless" meal that consisted of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a bag of
chips, an apple and/or an orange, and a bag of cookies. This "Homeless" meal is what the youth (UMYF) feed the
homeless in the Hickory area once a month. The second evening, Shiloh Lutheran Church provided a spaghetti meal,
and the third evening we had hot dogs.
Tammy Beard and Rachel Beard were the Paddle Captains for the "Rolling River Rampage" Bible story time. Jesus
calls the Disciples, Mary and Martha, and Zacchaeus were the Bible stories. Candy Millsaps was the Paddle Captain
for the water fun. Thursday and Friday evening were fun games involving water; but Saturday evening was all about
water - going down a slip-n slide.
After technical issues were solved on the first evening, we watched a DVD for some fun with music. We learned to
sign language three phrases: find adventure on the river; find acceptance on the river; and find joy on the river.
We had two take home projects - made a backpack zipper pull and a cross with river rocks.
Oh, about to forget - the adults had a class lead by Pastor David Hefner from Shiloh Lutheran Church.
God's Kids will not meet in August; the next meeting will be September 9th. Come join the fun and invite your
friends.
