How Soil Forms

Humus is dark, organic material that forms in soil when plant and animal matter decays. When plants drop leaves, twigs, and other material to the ground, it piles up. This material is called leaf litter. When animals die, their remains add to the litter.

Soil Conservation: is a way of managing soil that reduces erosion and maintains the nutrients plants need.

Strip Cropping: Planting wind breaks between sections of crops can stop or slow down erosion of top soil by the wind.

Terracing

Strip Cropping

Crop Rotation: Rotating crops so the soil is not depleted of nutrients.
