The “Apple Car”?

• There have been rumors about Apple’s efforts to develop a car for the past year.!

• LinkedIn and other sources have confirmed that Apple has hired hundreds of automotive engineers.

Reaction:• GM recently announced that

they’ll offer Apple’s dashboard infotainment system CarPlay on several models across its Chevy and Buick brands.!

• Apple was a hot topic at the recent Frankfurt Auto Show, even though it wasn’t even in attendance.!

• Auto industry professionals are concerned if Google and Apple will do to the auto industry what they did to the digital world.!

• Apple has the resources and brand recognition to be a major “disruptor”.

Apple isn’t the only one…

• Google has been working on a self-driving vehicle for several years now. !

• They recently unveiled a fully-functioning prototype, which they’ve started testing on California roads.

Tesla• Electric car company Tesla has

already disrupted the auto industry with how they market and sell their technology.

How does the future look?

• The auto industry is much more heavily regulated than the tech industry.!

• Car glitches are much more serious (and dangerous) than iPhone glitches, so the stakes for perfection are much higher.!

• It still remains unclear if the tech giants will be able to replicate their success in the auto industry, but it is clear they have always disrupted it.
