Sustainability
Electric vehicles, the circular economy, and
renewable energy are leading to a shift in demand.
The global movement toward increased recycling
and renewable energy will reduce demand for
some mass commodities. Meanwhile, electric
vehicles will increase demand for rare commodities
where the demand outstrips the supply.
Mining companies are shifting focus to commodities that
provide new growth and margins, such as components
for electric vehicles. In addition, mining companies are
themselves looking to increase the deployment of electric
fleets in their operations. Energy and water continue to be
major areas of focus for mining companies that want to use
technology to drive efficiency.
Knowledge Workers
Increasing automation, high-tech equipment and
processes, and the mountains of data coming in
from increased use of the Internet of Things are
driving demand for highly skilled labor. Mining
companies are competing with other industries for
the same labor force in this area.
Mining companies will have to look increasingly outside their
usual talent pools to find workers with the new skills and
mind-set to meet their needs and provide fresh ideas and
inspiration for growth.
Automation and Robotics
Automation and robots will increasingly allow mining
companies to move people out of hazardous areas
and allow mining in areas thus far impossible to
reach, such as deep-ocean locations. Automation
is also driving big efficiency gains in back-office
processes for repetitive non-value-added tasks.
From robotic drills to aerial drones, automation is bringing a
new measure of safety to mines – and boosting efficiency.
We are moving toward fully automated mines completely
operated by machines, with few to no people on-site.
Machine learning and real-time advanced analytics will
enable operations to become more efficient, less interrupted,
and smoother than before.
Mining Companies Face New Challenges and Opportunities
Amid Digital Disruption
Leading mining companies use market dynamics to create and capture new business opportunities.
Leading mining companies

SAP Leonardo: Capabilities and Services Extend Current
Processes to Capture New Sources of Value
Extending business processes aims at generating more value and new outcomes. It begins by challenging the status quo:
Are we doing the right things in managing assets or in shaping customer relationships? Innovators use digital technology
to reimagine business processes to create new value. Outages never happen, because they have been predicted and
prevented. Customers receive service before they realize they need it. Assets go smoothly through their lifecycle because
they are networked with OEMs and service providers.

SAP Leonardo: Transformational Scenario – Intelligent Supply Chain for Assets
In mining, timely material flow and asset uptime and reliability have tremendous impacts on profitability. The intelligent supply chain for assets is a new business
process that builds on the established use of sales and operations planning and applies it to the area of asset management by integrating the demand, maintenance,
and supply functions across the time horizons of planning, scheduling, and execution. This approach reflects the asset as a “customer” and efficiently delivers work
order requirements to the assets to ensure they remain in operation. This opens the door for aligned maintenance and production planning while reducing transportation
costs and improving availability of parts. This approach, combined with the concept of digital twins for assets, will optimize the entire lifecycle of asset maintenance.
▪ No collaboration for supply
planning and production
scheduling
▪ Static inventory planning, leading
to high inventory carrying costs
▪ Nonoptimized procurement,
leading to higher costs and
longer waits
▪ Manual tracking of parts, which is
slow and error prone
▪ Planning and scheduling adopted
as a supply discipline
▪ Reduced mean time to repair
and reduced mean time between
failure
▪ Reduced transportation costs
▪ Reduced spare parts inventory
and working capital
▪ The digital twin concept, which
supports extending collaboration
directly to suppliers for optimized
asset maintenance strategies

SAP Leonardo: Transformational Scenario – “Run a mine like a factory”
Thought-leading mining companies are taking a page from manufacturing to run their mines like a factory, using supply and production planning approaches and
predicting and planning levels of output in accordance with projected sales and other company goals and constraints. Mining companies can track actual inventory
levels, fleet location, and customer demand to make decisions based on real-time awareness.
▪ Siloed information between mine

SAP Leonardo: Transformational Scenario – Image Recognition for Spare Parts
Ensuring the correct spare parts are available in time is crucial in mining. Manual identification of parts and contracts is time-consuming and error prone. Image
recognition can be used to simplify and add efficiency to many of the processes surrounding spare parts availability, including the purchase requisitioning process.
This results in reduced purchase requisition and purchase order lead time and in a reduction in spare parts inventory, which translates into a reduction of working
capital and increased labor efficiency.

SAP and Customers Jointly Enable the Transformation Journey
Innovations can do a lot to help the mining industry, such as improving on-site operations and decision-making. Design
thinking can optimize those improvements.
Metals and mining corporation Vale developed a completely new process in just four weeks. Inventory is about US$1.6 billion of
Vale’s $11 billion annual spend, so the company decided to automate purchasing processes to make them more intelligent.
Before automated purchasing, maintenance workers had to ask an ERP user to create a purchase requisition before
acquiring a new part for damaged equipment. This completely manual process often overlooked parts already available –
and users frequently searched through multiple screens before finding the missing information. These steps often resulted in
a lot of redundant work and wasted time. Between 25% and 40% of rejections of all purchase requisitions occurred because
the part was either available on contract or in inventory. Vale put its procurement team through an SAP Design Thinking
workshop to sort through the major challenges. They had a draft prototype in week one; by the following week, they had
feedback – and were making adjustments. The resulting solution used machine learning and other innovations to allow
maintenance technicians to quickly identify, find, or order spare parts that needed replacement, increasing the speed and
automation of the purchasing requisition process.
“We set up a plan to innovate in
four weeks . . . and that was an
amazing experience.”
Helio Mosquim, IT Innovation
Manager, Vale6
