Outline Introduction Related Studies Methodology Pilot Study Conclusion

Introduction To examine the design process to enable the

delivery of mobile application for Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Mobile learning (m-learning) Wireless technology, personal control of place

and time The Malaysian Communications & Multimedia

Commissions (MCMC) reported: Q4 2012, penetration rate for mobile phone in

Malaysia is 141.6% (>100%) The use of mobile phone helps to provide

flexible tools for learning and teaching

Introduction – Related studiesLanguage Learning with mobile device :1. Babbel.com Learn more than 13 languages Phrase, images, sound, pronunciations

2. Oh My English! Learn English – quizzes, games Mimic classroom activities Guided by local celebrities.

Research Questions Is it feasible to design and deliver mobile

application for MUET?

What are the factors that hindered the learning process using mobile phone for second language?

Methodology to Design a Mobile Application System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is

adopted.

Figure 1 SDLC Methodology

For the development, we use android development kit (SDK) and JAVA development Kit (JDK). To run this application a basic android mobile phone is needed.

Pilot study The study was conducted with 5 students

from one of the faculty in UTeM. To know the feasibility and to learn the

lessons for designing a larger study at a later stage.

Student - questionnaires to gauged the information on their activities using mobile phone before the study.

Use the application for 1 hour. Give written feedback about their experience

on using the application.

Pilot study - Results

From the questionnaires: chatting with friends using mobile phone – WhatsApp,

WeChat messaging friends using SMSchatting and messaging coursematescontact lecturers when important

Feedback regarding the MUET application: 80% agree can enhance learning experience 20% learning experience is hindered - lots of

distractions available on the mobile phone 80% suggested to add more functions and exercises20% would prefer to the traditional method to learn

Discussion

Several findings : The use of SDLC as the methodology for building the

mobile application is relevant. The use of mobile phone among the university

students is very handy. The development of MUET application interestingly

manage to spark the interest for students to use and learn.

The overall findings from the study suggested that students have a positive view of using mobile application to learn MUET.

ConclusionThere are several limitations identified. Precise information whether the student has

any experience in using mobile phone for learning especially language learning.

Main study : questionnaires and interviews. Conduct quasi experimental study- pre and

post questionnaire - to measure more accurate findings.

Implemented with bigger samples , longer period to get more better results and in depth pattern or analysis.
