what is an ORCID iD, and why provide it?•  iDs accompany your name to uniquely identify you

•  are you Prof Paglione the astronomer at AMNH or at Maryland?•  iDs are owned by you, and used your entire career

•  changed names? changed affiliations? the iD remains the same!•  iDs are used by services like Google Scholar, many universities,

funders and others to unambiguously link your activities to you•  yup, this is her publication; the iDs match up. no need to ask her!

what is an ORCID record, and why keep it updated?•  the record links activities to your iD, even activities that existed

before your iD did

•  many systems you use refer to the ORCID record rather than ask you to update them directly

•  updating is easy because many publishers are partnering with Crossref to automatically update your record
