Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission
One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome,
worship and encounter.
❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in
bold type in this order of service
❖ We apologise that the Hearing Enhancement Loop is not currently
operational.
❖ This service will be broadcast on YouTube and available for the following two
weeks.
❖ There will be no collection taken during the service but you are invited to make
a donation to the Cathedral, as part of your worship, using the donations box by
the door, or online, through the Cathedral website.
❖ For those at home, unable to receive Holy Communion: The term ‘Spiritual
Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a
person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the
Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of
which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of
Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are
joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am
the Bread of Life’.
❖ Members of the Cathedral Choir leads this morning’s worship. The choral settings
are the Gloria from P. Jones’ Coventry Gloria and the Sanctus, Benedictus, and
Agnus Dei from A. Batten’s Short Communion Service.
Visiting organist: Will Campbell.
❖ The flowers this week have been given by Sarah and Paul Maybury, Richard and
Anna in loving memory of Mum - Lois Howard, who would have been 91 on
August 6th.

Hymn
Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided,
urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way,
sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided,
Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today.
Lord, for that word, the word of life which fires us,
speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze,
teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us,
Lord of the word, receive your people’s praise.
Lord, for our land, in this our generation,
spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care;
for young and old, for commonwealth and nation,
Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer.
Lord, for our world; when we disown and doubt him,
loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain;
hungry and helpless, lost indeed without him,
Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign.
Lord, for ourselves; in living power remake us,
self on the cross and Christ upon the throne;
past put behind us, for the future take us,
Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith
Tune: Lord of the Years CP81

Prayers of Penitence
God so loved the world
that he gave his only son Jesus Christ
to save us from our sins,
to be our advocate in heaven,
and to bring us to eternal life.
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith,
firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments
and to live in love and peace with all.
Silence
Almighty God, we have sinned against you
and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry
and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your son Jesus Christ,
who died for us,
forgive us all that is past
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name.
Amen.
Almighty God,
who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayer of the day
Almighty God,
who sent your Holy Spirit
to be the life and light of your Church:
open our hearts to the riches of your grace,
that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit
in love and joy and peace;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

New Testament Reading Ephesians 4.1-16 read by Jane Thompson
I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to
which you have been called, 2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing
with one another in love, 3making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in
the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the
one hope of your calling, 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of
all, who is above all and through all and in all. 7But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8Therefore it is said,
‘When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;
he gave gifts to his people.’ 9(When it says, ‘He ascended’, what does it mean but that he had also descended
into the lower parts of the earth? 10He who descended is the same one who
ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) 11The gifts he gave
were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors
and teachers, 12to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body
of Christ, 13until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. 14We must no
longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by
people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. 15But speaking the truth in
love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16from
whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it
is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in
building itself up in love.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading John 6.24-35 read by Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean and Canon Precentor
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord
So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they
themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when
did you come here?’ 26Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking
for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27Do
not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his
seal.’ 28Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of
God?’ 29Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him
whom he has sent.’ 30So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then,
so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31Our
ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread
from heaven to eat.” ’ 32Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not
Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the
true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is that which comes down from
heaven and gives life to the world.’ 34They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ 35Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be
hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

The Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
cf 1 Corinthians 15.3-7

Prayers of Intercession Led by Mary Fisher

let us pray to God.
After each section this, or an alternative, response is used:
Lord in your mercy
hear our prayer.
Merciful God,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Giving and Receiving Peace
We are all one in Christ Jesus,
We belong to him through faith,
heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace.
The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.
We offer one another a sign of peace
and offer our gifts to God.

Hymn
Guide me, O thou great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
hold me with thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore.
Open now the crystal fountain
whence the healing stream doth flow;
let the fiery cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through:
strong deliverer,
be thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside;
death of death, and hell’s destruction,
land me safe on Canaan’s side:
songs and praises
I will ever give to thee.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer
The Lord is here.
God’s Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is always right to give you thanks,
God our Creator, loving and faithful,
holy and strong.
You made us and the whole universe,
and filled your world with life.
You sent your Son to live among us,
Jesus our Saviour, Mary’s child.
He suffered on the cross;
he died to save us from our sins;
he rose in glory from the dead.
You send your Spirit
to bring new life to the world,
and clothe us with power from on high.
And so we join the angels
to celebrate and sing:
Choir Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts,
heaven and earth are full of thy glory:
Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord,
Hosanna in the highest.
On the night before he died,
Jesus shared a meal with his friends.
He took the bread, and thanked you.
He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this to remember me.
After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.
He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you.
This is my blood,
the new promise of God’s unfailing love.
Do this to remember me.
12
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
As we bring this bread and wine,
and remember his death and resurrection,
send your Holy Spirit,
that we who share these gifts
may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.
Pour your Spirit on us
that we may love one another,
work for the healing of the earth,
and share the good news of Jesus,
as we wait for his coming in glory.
For honour and praise belong to you,
with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
Being made one by the power of the Spirit,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray:
Our Father in heaven
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
13
Breaking of the Bread
We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion
The body of Christ given for you.
Amen.
The blood of Christ shed for you.
Amen.
Choir O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace.
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of Communion
Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer
If you would like to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, you may wish to use the following
prayer, after Richard of Chichester:
Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,
for all the benefits you have given me,
for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,
I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.
O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,
may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly,
and follow you more nearly, day by day.
Amen.
Communion Motet
If ye love me, keep my commandments,
and I will pray the Father,
and he shall give you another comforter,
that he may bide in you for ever,
e’en the spirit of truth.
Words: John 14:15-17
Music: T. Tallis (ca. 1505-1585)

Prayer after Communion
Holy Father,
who gathered us here around the table of your Son
to share this meal with the whole household of God:
in that new world where you reveal the fullness of your peace,
gather people of every race and language
to share in the eternal banquet of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Hymn
Go forth and tell! O Church of God, awake!
God’s saving news to all the nations take:
proclaim Christ Jesus, Saviour, Lord and King,
that all the world his glorious praise may sing.
Go forth and tell! God’s love embraces all,
he will in grace respond to all who call:
how shall they call if they have never heard
the gracious invitation of his word?
Go forth and tell! The doors are open wide:
share God’s good gifts – let no one be denied;
live out your life as Christ your Lord shall choose,
your ransomed powers for his sole glory use.
Go forth and tell! O Church of God, arise!
Go in the strength which Christ your Lord supplies;
go till all nations his great name adore
and serve him, Lord and King for evermore.
Words: James E Seddon CP437
Tune: Woodlands CP 362
