The Bright Side of English - 8/12/2016
The leading Victorian art critic and aesthete John Ruskin theorised there were two sides to the grotesque: a terrible and a comically ridiculous or playful side. According to Ruskin, the dark and the bright side are impossible to separate from one another, but they can be studied separately. To test this proposal, we invite students and researchers at all levels to submit abstracts of around 200 words for presentations related to "The Bright Side of English" which will be held on the 8th of December 2016 at the University of Tampere. We are especially interested in the playful side of the grotesque, comedy and humour, the carnivalesque, satire and irony as social criticism, parodies and art works of questionable taste.
Please submit your abstracts via email to tommi.kakko@staff.uta.fi by 7/11/2016.
Attendance at the conference is free of charge. Students may receive credits by marking their participation in the ENGA21 Study Pass.
