The Blessed Man

…Blessed by God

2

• In Psalms 1, the writer wants to teach man the way of true happiness – he also wants to warn him of the sure destruction of sinners

3

• 1:1-3 The Blessedness of a godly man• 1:4-6 A contrast of the righteous

with the ungodly

4

I. The Blessed Man (vs. 1-3)

• “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful” (v.1)

5

I. The Blessed Man (vs. 1-3)

• Blessed = happy, fortunate• The Psalmist is looking at the

righteous man and the blessedness of being righteous

61. He does not walk (live) in the counsel of the ungodly

• The blessed man takes counsel or advice from the wise • He walks in the commandments

of the Lord

7

Ps. 119:105

• Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

8

Ps. 73:24

• Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

9

• The blessed man does not follow the wicked ways of sinful men

10

2. He does not stand in the way of sinners

• He does not associate with people who do wrong• Exodus 23:2• “Thou shalt not follow a

multitude to do evil”

11

1 Cor. 15:33 (ASV)

• Be not deceived: Evil companionships corrupt good morals.

12

3. He does not sit in the seat of the scornful

• He finds no pleasure in those who make jokes about God, sin, heaven, hell etc.• He reverences God and does not

want to hear God’s name blasphemed

13

Proverbs 14:9

• Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.

14

• The seat of the scornful can be found in many colleges, universities, films, books etc.

15

Walketh –sitteth - standeth

• These are arranged to show the progression of sin in the lives of those who follow after sin• The blessed man puts away evil

things and evil persons from him

16

• “He that would be kept from harm must keep himself out of harm’s way.”• Proverbs 13:20• “He that walketh with wise men shall

be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

17

• “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” (v.2)

18

4. “His delight is in the law of the Lord”

• He loves to read and study God’s Word• He reads the Word by day and

meditates upon it by night

19

Js. 1:25

• But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

20

• What a man meditates upon determines the real inner man• “A man may not be what he

thinks he is, but what he thinks, he is.”

21

Acts 17:11

• These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

225. He is a man who prospers in all things (v. 3)

• “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

23

• Being fruitful is a requirement of all of God’s children• Jn. 15:5• “I am the vine, ye are the branches:

He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

24

Gal. 5:22-23

• But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

25

• The righteous man prospers when he does things God’s way• His life is nourished by God’s

blessings

26

1 Pet. 3:10-12

• For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it…

27

• For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

28

II. The Ungodly man (vs. 4-5)

• “The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.” (v. 4)• Chaff = the tiny husk around the

grain; worthless, without substance

29

• “Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.” (v.5)

30

• The ungodly will not stand approved in judgment• There will not be one ungodly

person in heaven

31

Rev. 21:27

• And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

32

Rev. 22:15

• For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

33

III. The two ways contrasted (v.6)

• “For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” (v.6)

34

• God knows of and approves the way of the righteous• The ungodly shall perish –

eternally lost in hell• They will be punished because of

the life they chose to live!

35

• The ungodly:• 1. Are life chaff• 2. They shall not be acquitted on

the day of judgment• 3. They will not be in heaven
