• Teacher can anticipate the learning of difficulties

(Sheep, ship)

Contrastive analysis

Structural patterns

Structural linguistic theory Structural patterns are taught using repetitive

drills.

CHARLES FRIES OF THE UNI OF MICHIGAN applying

principle from structural linguistic in

developing the method that language is

consisted with phonetic lexicon pattern and syntax

Behaviorism• S-R chain a process of habit

formation• Positive reinforcement• Mimicry Drills (repetition Drill ) T: I am going to school.

Ss: I am going to school.

Behavioral linguistic • B.F skinner (1904 -1990)

Stimuli response shaping reinforcement habit forming

Principles• 1. Instructions are given in the

target language. • 2. Language forms occur within A

context. • 3. Students’ native language

interferes as little aspossible.

• 4. Analogy provides A better foundation forlanguage learning than analysis

• 5. Errors are carefully avoided because they leadto the formation of bad habits.

Advantages of ALM: • Language learning is A process of

habit formation. • Students are given drills. • In this method students can make

sentence pattern without stopping to think.

• IN ALM students can increase their pronunciation and speaking ability.

• It achieves noticeable success in developing oral fluency.

• It can also improve their listening ability, in ALM sometimes teacher use tape and language lab to hear dialogue from it.

• This method promotes the use of ENGLISH for communication in everyday situation

Disadvantages of ALM:

• Students were not exposed to real or realistic language.

• This method is too rigid ,classes tend to drag

• Students complain about the boredom caused by endless pattern drills.

• Pupil turns into parrot because of repetition who can reproduce many things but never create anything new

• This method is time consuming
