Welcome to the 2016 Tournament at Nizels!
James Gathercole
General Manager, Nizels Golf & Country Club
Well, for many of you this is a regular event but for me at Nizels it’s a first... having played golf for over 25 year it’s a great pleasure to be involved in the running of this fantastic event. Just making it on to the start sheet for all of you has been an achievement as the demand for a places has been at it’s highest in the tournament’s history.
Working alongside Alan Cheeseman and his very hard working and willing team has shown me what effort it takes to put on these 4 days. No detail is too small and I hope you not only play well but also enjoy spending a bit of time here at Nizels.
This year brings another development with the TV cameras picking up every long
drive, 40 foot putt and the odd chip in here and there. This really is your moment to shine.
Paul Shepherd, our course manager, and his team have done an excellent job in getting the course ready once again in fabulous condition, they are backed up with support from other Club Company course green keepers, who come back year after year to help out across the week.
The London Olympics was all about the Games Makers as I am sure Rio will be. Well here we could not be as successful without our Stewards who give up their free time to make your round go without a hitch.
A big thank you to you all.
Our association with Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity which will touch many of you, and supported by Centtrip will be aiming to raise and beat last year’s amazing total
Good luck and may the best players win!

...of the progress many of our past players have made over the years since 1998.
This year alone, Haydn Porteous of South Africa has won the Jo’burg Open, giving him exemption to The Open at Royal Troon next month, alongside another past Henry Cooper player Chris Wood.
Haydn played The Henry Cooper twice - 2011 and 2013 and Chris Wood was here in 2004 and 2005.
In 2004 our Champion was Joost Luiten from Holland. He is currently lying 8th on the Race to Dubai. So, there you have a
trio of past players who are worth watching at the Open, and there could well be more by the time we get to 10th July!
Max Orrin, who played here in 2013 and 2014 and one of our Ambassadors, has now turned pro and is carving out a winning start with wins in Denmark and Oman.
So, how many of this year’s players will go on to life-changing careers in golf? Enjoy this year’s tournament with us - watching over 150 of the best teenage golfers playing here at beautiful Nizels!
If you can’t stay for all three days, watch it all later on Sky Sports.
You never know - you could be watching yet more stars of the future!
We’re very proud...

CANCER SUCKS. YOUNG PEOPLESHOULDN’T FACE IT ALONE. WE MAKE SURE THEY DON’T.
Just when life should be about fun, friends and the future, cancer shatters everything.
Every day 7 young people and their families are shaken by a cancer diagnosis. We make sure they don’t face it alone but we can’t do it without you.
Imagine you’re a teenager and you’re diagnosed with cancer. Along with all the questions you’re already dealing with about who you are and where you’re going, you’re suddenly faced with an illness that can
totally change the way you feel, the way you look and the way people treat you. It’s easy to end up feeling alone.
Relationships can get weird. Families can struggle to cope. Keeping up with education or work becomes a major challenge. Your body changes in ways that make you unable to look in a mirror. And all the while you might be treated like a child or talked to in language you can’t get your head around.
When that’s the case, having support from expert staff who understand what you’re going through and what’s on your mind can make a vital difference – and that’s the support that Teenage Cancer Trust offers.
OUR WORKTeenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity that exists exclusively to make life better for young people with cancer.
We focus only on 13-24 year-olds because at that age a cancer diagnosis brings very specific challenges. That’s why we exist – working in partnership with the NHS to provide the expert support young people need to deal with the physical, psychological and practical impact of cancer.
BEFORE DIAGNOSISWe explain the truth about cancer in young people as part of our Education & Awareness Programme so that young people and their families aren’t afraid to talk about it, and GPs, teachers and parents are better prepared to recognise it.
DURING TREATMENTWe bring young people with cancer together on our 28 units in NHS hospitals, provide Teenage Cancer Trust Nurses and Youth Support Coordinators, and we’re also supporting more young people with cancer at local hospitals all over the UK, as well as visiting them at home.
AFTER TREATMENTOur work doesn’t end when cancer treatment ends. As teenagers and young adults adjust to whatever the future holds, we’re there to offer advice and support through ongoing contact with our Nurses and Youth Support Coordinators and through our programme of Support Events.

The
GEORGEDRAG NPub And Dining Room
The George & Dargon, Chipstead
Whether you are popping in for a coffee during the day,
a quick drink after work or sitting down to enjoy a freshly
prepared meal and a glass of wine, you are sure to find
the setting, ambience and above all the hospitality just to
your liking.
As the Michelin Guide says “Superbly set, 450 year old inn
with a beamed bar and a wonky-floored upstairs dining room.
Delightful garden with terrace and children’s play area. The
menu is a roll call of seasonal English classics; herbs and salad
are home-grown.”
But, at its heart the George & Dragon, Chipstead
remains a local village pub offering a warm welcome,
friendly hospitality and excellent food. The menu changes
daily reflecting what produce is available locally, and
the team of talented chefs work passionately everyday to
use the best produce from the surrounding countryside.
Everything is fresh, seasonal and where possible local.
You are very welcome to join us after the golf!
The Little Garden, Sevenoaks
Located in central Sevenoaks, the little garden restaurant,
bar and grill is a modern, contemporary restaurant with
an international menu, cooked by talented chefs in stylish
surroundings and with exceptional service.
Spread over two floors, the restaurant features exposed
brick work, leather banquette seating, bar and top of the
range, open plan kitchen, which features Sevenoaks’ first
charcoal Josper Oven.
The jewel in the restaurant’s crown is the private secluded
courtyard which has been transformed into a beautiful,
heated, decked area, surrounded by beds of box hedging,
cyclamen and ivy, and set underneath a stunning old tree
lit up by twinkling fairy lights.
Whether joining us for a cocktail or a glass of wine under
the canopy of our beautiful old maple tree or enjoying a
three course meal in the garden-inspired restaurant, we
aim to provide exceptional, warm and friendly hospitality;
a home from home.
Perfectly placed for a visit between rounds in the centre of
Sevenoaks.
Good luck to everyone at The Henry Cooper!

The Sunningdale Foursomes is a unique matchplay event which sees amateur and professional golfers, both men and women, competing against each other. Nowhere else in golf can you find one of the world’s leading amateur golfers playing against an ex-Ryder Cup player. This quintessential British event has been staged over Sunningdale’s Old and New courses every March since 1934. The competition epitomises the heritage of the game and oozes its class and charm.
Marco Penge, paired with girlfriend Sophie Lamb, were hoping to emulate some of the great past winners which read like a who’s who of British golf – Joyce Wethered, Sir Michael Bonallack, Peter Alliss, Sam Torrance, Ronan Rafferty and Luke Donald.
Tournament rules are that female amateurs receive four strokes and female professionals two, while male amateurs play off of scratch and professionals +1.
All progressed well for our couple until round 4, when Sophie and Marco realised they faced friends Harvey Byers and Charlie Strickland for a place in the quarter final.
It really was a pleasure to witness three of our players battle it out. We all knew that the boys would be up against it with the shot allowance but what followed was some truly excellent golf. By the 11th hole the mixed pair held a two hole advantage.
Sophie then holed out from 146 yards to make eagle and take a three hole lead with quite an unbelievable shot. Another fine putt from Lamb finished the tie with yet another birdie on 16, Marco and Sophie moved on to the quarter final with a 4&2 win.
Sophie and Marco faced a challenge from tour professionals Tom Shadbolt and Tomasz Anderson in the quarter finals. With three consecutive birdies from the sixth hole the mixed pair never looked back and by the 10th they were five holes to the good. A resounding six holes up with five left too play to win.
The semi final saw Sophie and Marco take on James Kemp and Mark Wharton from Woburn. By the time they reached the 10th the tie was all square. Penge and Lamb regained their form and from the turn they won holes 10, 11 and 12 giving themselves a three hole advantage with six
holes left. A half on holes 13 , 14, 15 and 16 was enough to see the couple through to the final.
With the likes of Fleetwood , Torrance, Morrison, Rock and Dougherty all taking an early bath the door was left open for Penge and Lamb to take home the famous title. Only professionals Lewis Atkinson and Scott Marshall stood in their way. The young couple were two up through three holes in the final and although the match did go back to all square at one stage it was all over by the 15th with Penge chipping in for birdie from 30ft.
Sophie Lamb and Marco Penge added themselves to illustrious champions list, winning 5&4.

A recent pump project
/ PumpAid @PumpAid PumpAid
This was the daily Telegraph’s verdict on last year’s tournament in their feature about our 2015 Champions Emma Allen and Marco Penge. Quite an accolade.
In 1998 we dreamed of becoming one of the best championships in England. So here we are, staging our 19th event as one of the best in the world! Who knows where we might be when we come of age in 2018?
As many people will know, we entered into a long-term working relationship with Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) just before last year’s tournament and the ensuing 12 months have seen significant developments in that area. Probably most notable is our new relationship with Golfing 4 Life (G4L), an organisation dedicated to supporting young players who have the skill and desire to reach the top of their chosen sport. Much the same as our own Charity, but on a larger scale.
The catalysts in all this activity are two gentlemen, James Byers and Bill Curbishley. James contacted me last year and asked if he could get involved in sponsorship and promotion. Little did I know that he would introduce me to Bill and the world of high level City finance and charity funding. It maybe hard to believe, but James is even more enthusiastic than me!
“...The Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, duly recognised as one of the leading under-18 Championships in the World” 14th July 2015
Bill is a Trustee of TCT, the manager of rock band The Who and a co-founder of G4L with James.
The most significant outcome of our conversations is the presence of Sky Sports throughout this year’s tournament. In the past Sky have occasionally sent a camera crew on the final day, and given us a few minutes on one of their golf programmes the following week. I have been trying for 12 years to secure sufficient sponsorship for a one-hour highlights programme of our own, and thanks to Bill’s and James’ efforts, Centtrip, the pre-paid currency Mastercard, have very generously sponsored this coverage. Sky will be at the tournament throughout the four days, including at the marquee events like the Summer Party.
Bill and James have also been doing a great job organising the celebrity/Junior-‘Pro’/Am. Due to our enforced early date this year, we have been hit on that day by the European Championships Wales v England match and with the US Open golf.
Who would have thought the most interesting football match would be played in the afternoon of our event!! This has precluded all the football stars who had agreed to play, and the tour golfers who were due to come back from America, hitting us very hard, but it should be a great day anyway! Alan Curbishley and Sky’s Geoff Shreeves will be hosting the luncheon in the marquee, and a giant TV screen will show the match live to guests. The giant TV screen will be operating all weekend showing live European football and US Open coverage.
It’s always very difficult finding dates which don’t clash with other major international tournaments, especially when we are dealing with under-18s who have to contend with school exams. And this year we have ended up right at the peak of the exam syllabus!
The Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters has developed over the years to be a major world championship. As a result we were able to set up the charity in 2003 to help deserving elite junior golfers. To date we have awarded nearly 60 bursaries to young players who needed financial help to follow their career aspirations.
12
13
We couldn’t do that without staging a highly regarded tournament which, in addition to giving these wonderful players a taste of what a European Tour event might be like, also raises funds for our charity to disperse. In this respect the tournament always has to be the main focus of the Trustees and the Management Team throughout the year, especially when seeking sponsorship.
Talking of the team, we have some great management team members but we are always looking for new help! If you have a particular skill or background, or just want to help out during the year (yes, it takes a year to organise the Henry Cooper) I would love to hear from you. The more help we get, the less work for each individual.
It’s good fun and very rewarding putting something back into junior golf, and we get to see some of the stars of the future. Players like Joost Luiten, Rhys Davies, Haydn Porteous and Chris Wood – all now making money and a name for themselves on the European and PGA Tours.
A major factor in staging a junior golf championship which aims to replicate a tour event is its venue presentation. You will see a multitude of sponsors’ boards around the course and on each
tee. You will see TV cameras and a giant scoreboard as well as repeater leaderboards around the course.
And there is the marquee overlooking the 18th green, providing comfortable accommodation for up to 140 diners or 250 dancers! This will be the host venue for the Junior-‘Pro’/Am luncheon and afternoon screening of the Wales v England football match on Thursday. On Friday evening we have our famous Summer Party, this year starring the fabulous ‘West End Jerseys’ supported by DJ Apollo Funk. With a BBQ until 9.30pm and a licensed bar all evening it promises to be a great summer night in the marquee!
Importantly, the Championship Dinner is held in the marquee on Saturday evening. The dinner has proved over the years to have been instrumental in the development of the tournament, allowing representatives of golf federations, R&A and the Henry Cooper to meet informally and discuss future development.
So, here’s to another successful tournament and a HUGE ‘thank you’ to everyone involved – we couldn’t do it without you!

Have a great Championship.
Wishing you the very
best of luck from

The Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters presents an exciting and unique opportunity for a sponsor to come on board at grassroots level, to foster, promote and actively participate in growing an already established event that attracts some of the best junior golfing talent in the world, applying the highest standards of sportsmanship in pursuit of excellence and achievement,
Established 18 years ago to showcase top junior golfing talent, the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters Golf Championship is an R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking tournament, and part of the R&A selection process for Great Britain and Ireland under-18 golf teams.
Replicating a European Tour Event, with corporate hospitality, tented village, TV coverage and media interviews, the Junior Masters is a springboard for these young golfers onto the international stage. Many of our young golfers and past winners, such as Tom Lewis, Oliver Fisher, Rhys Davies and Chris Wood, to name but a few, have gone on to forge successful careers on the European and PGA Tours.
Run by the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters Charitable Trust, the tournament is staffed purely by volunteers and is ably run by a dedicated team of Trustees and Tournament Team members, under the chairmanhip of Alan Cheeseman, who is passionate about ensuring the tournament adheres to the standards of a true European event. The tournament is staged at Nizels Golf Club, amidst beautiful Kent countryside and just an hour away from London.
Talented players who have struggled financially to follow their dreams have also been helped by the Sir Henry Cooper bursary scheme, with grants available, offering a ‘lifeline’ to those who might otherwise fall by the wayside. As a youngster establishing his career, Oliver Fisher has been one such recipient under the bursary scheme.
This year we are delighted to welcome some of Europe’s best girl golfers, all playing off scratch and some of them still under 16 years of age!
We believe we are the first major international golf championship to feature both boy and girl élite golfers and it will be fantastic to see them all in action.
To achieve our aims and objectives we are offering sponsorship opportunities to include Sky TV, local and national coverage with added sponsor’s benefits available to include editorial and advertising coverage in the Tournament Brochure.
A schedule of benefits is available on request. Packages including corporate hospitality and entertainment can be tailor made to sponsors’ requirements.
