Eruption Of Mt. St Helens

Erupted on May 18th 1980.

Eruption caused an earthquake registered 5.1 on the Richter scale.

230 sq miles of forest was blown down by the earthquake.

U.S. Hockey Team beats Russia in Olympic Games.

In the 1980 Olympics the U.S. Men’s Hockey Team defeats the Russians.

The Russians were favored to win the Olympics by a landslide.

The U.S. team was made up of primarily all college players.

Death Of John Lennon

John Lennon the lead singer of the Beatles was shot on Monday, December 8th 1980

Mark David Chapman shot him outside his home in New York City.

Sandra Day O’ Connor

First female supreme court justice.

Appointed by the president Ronald Reagan.

She was in office from September 25th 1981 to January 31st 2006.

She showed a very conservative side.

M T V

MTV debut as the first ever music television station.

It was launched April 1st 1981

First music video: “Killed the Radiostar” video DJ’s were “on air” hosts.

The headquarters were in New York, New York.

Iran-Contra Affair

This started on August 20th 1985 to March 4th 1987.

The scandal began as an operation to free American hostages being held by terrorist groups with Iranian ties.

Assassination Attempt of Reagan

Occurred March 30, 1981

69 days into Reagan’s presidency.

He suffered a punctured lung

John Hinckley Jr. attempted the assassination.

“Thriller”

Released by Michael Jackson on December 2, 1983.

First 14 minute video.

Most influential pop music video of all time.

Most successful music video", selling over 9 million units.

Liposuction

Prior to the 1980s, extensive surgery was required to remove such stubborn fatty deposits.

Cocaine

Cocaine became the lifestyle drug of the 1980s. Became popular in 2 stages. First the drug was

only considered a fun “recreational drug”

The second stage was considered the epidemic with 22 million people abused cocaine.

John Belushi sparked the widespread cocaine epidemic with his death.

South Korean Flight 007

September 1, 1983

Soviet jets shot down the plane while it was flying.

U.S. Congressman Lawrence McDonald was aboard.

Sally Ride

One of the 35 women trainees to be chosen to up into space.

She started training in 1978.

She boarded the “The Challenger”

She left NASA in the year of 1987.

Beirut Terrorist Attack

October 23, 1983.

Terrorist suicide bombers attacked the United States Beirut complex.

Killed 299 American and French Service men.

Replaced the record.

The new sensation.

Olympics in LA

Started July 28th in 1984.

Had 6829 athletes participating in these summer olympics.

bVanessa Williams

Born March 18th 1963.

She was a singer, actress, and a producer.

In 1983 she became the first black woman of African American descent to be crowned Miss America, but a scandal caused her to loose that title.

We Are the World

Released March 7 1985

Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie

We Are the World" is a song and charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985.

Len Bias

Born November 18 1963

Bias took a dose of cocaine which likely induced cardiac arrhythmia.

At 6:32 a.m., when the 911 call to Prince George's County Emergency Services was made by Brian Tribble (a long-time friend), Bias was unconscious and not breathing. All attempts by the emergency medical team to restart his heart and breathing were unsuccessful

Nintendo

Founded September 23rd 1989.

Founded in Kyoto, Japan.

They sold over 565 million hardware units and 3.4 billion software units by October 18th 2010.

Challenger Diaster

Occurred on Tuesday January 28th 1986.

It broke apart 73 seconds into the flight start up.

All crew members were killed in this diaster.

Some parts of the shuttle were found at the bottom of the ocean.

AIDS

April 24th, in San Fransico Ken Horne , the first AIDS case in the United States.

On October 31th, French Canadian flight attendant pays his first visit to the New York City bathhouses.

Supermodel GIA

Gia Carangi Carangi born January 29th 1960.

She was an American fashion model during the early 1980’s

She was considered the first supermodel.

She became infected with HIV, when she became addicted to heroin and died at the age of 26.

She’s thought to be the most famous woman for dying from AIDS

Baby Jessica

She became famous at the age of 18 months for falling into a well.

For 58 hours straight workers tried there hardest to get this baby out of the 8 inch wide and 22 feet downed well.

Over the years she’s had 15 surgeries, and doesn’t remember this certain event.

Michael Dukakis

He was born on November 3, 1933.

Served as the 65th and 67th Governor of Massachusetts.

Longest serving governor for Massachusetts.

Soviets leave Afghanistan

Feb 16th 1989 the last soldier leaves Afghanistan.

There were 100,300 Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
