TFOS CONFERENCE
The 8th International Conference on theTear Film & Ocular Surface: BasicScience and Clinical Relevance will
occur from 7-10 September 2016, at theCorum in Montpellier, France. This Conferenceis sponsored by TFOS (www.TearFilm.org)and is designed to assess the currentknowledge and 'state of the art' research onthe structure and function of tear film-
producing tissues, tears and the ocularsurface in health and disease. The TFOSConference will also promote an internationalexchange of information that will be of valueto basic scientists involved in eye research, toclinicians in the eye care community, and tocompanies with an interest in the diagnosisand/or treatment of tear film or ocularsurface disorders.
Importance of the tear film & ocular surface:
A significant, international research effort isbeing directed towards understanding thecomposition, function and regulation of thepreocular tear film. This effort is motivated bythe recognition that the tear film plays a criticalrole in maintaining corneal and conjunctivalintegrity, protecting against microbial challengeand preserving visual acuity.
In addition, research is stimulated by theknowledge that tear film deficiency, whichoccurs in countless individuals throughout theworld, may lead to ocular surface desiccation, corneal ulceration, an increased incidence ofinfectious disease, and potentially pronouncedvisual disability.
