The Texas Wheat Producers Board (TWPB) and Association continue to work diligently to readily make available resources for wheat producers. Texas Wheat has worked to strengthen the stability of wheat markets, promote and fund essential wheat research, build customer loyalty and support programs to enhance producer profitability. The board oversees and allocates the expenditures of the two-cent-per-bushel statewide wheat check-off for use in research, market development and education. The association is the legislative arm of the organization, providing a single united voice for Texas wheat producers in Austin and Washington, D.C.
RESEARCH: Funding research is an integral part of the TWPB mission. During the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the TWPB will support a number of research initiatives, allocating $285,750 for researchers to look at a variety of issues concerning Texas Wheat. Some of the research projects supported by the TWPB include the wheat breeding program and the statewide Uniform Variety Trials.
MARKET DEVELOPMENT: The board remains committed to ensuring the competitiveness of Texas wheat in national and international markets. In 2019, the board hosted a trade team of Brazilian flour milling executives with the goal of promoting high quality Texas wheat to developing foreign markets.
EDUCATION: In addition to developing educational programs for youth, consumers and producers, the TWPB participates in several national programs to increase awareness and consumption of wheat products. These programs include the Home Baking Association (HBA), which focuses on giving family and consumer sciences teachers and extension educators the tools and knowledge to promote the practice of home baking while incorporating wheat-based products. The TWPB also partners with the Wheat Foods Council (WFC) to distribute scientific and nutritional information to health and nutritional professionals, dietitians, personal trainers, educators, media personnel and consumers.
LEGISLATION: Throughout the year, the Texas Wheat Producers Association staff and leaders engaged elected officials in Austin and Washington, D.C. on several issues, including eminent domain, water regulations and titles within the 2018 Farm Bill, including farm programs, crop insurance and market development funding. The association’s commitment to create a unified voice in government for Texas wheat producers has never been stronger.
The TWPA is a voluntary membership organization funded solely by membership dues. This grassroots organization is directed by an executive committee of Texas producers who represent areas spanning the entire state.

The Uniform Wheat Variety Trial (UWVT), presented in the following pages, is coordinated and implemented by numerous Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension faculty and staff. We appreciate the cooperation from numerous Texas A&M AgriLife County Extension Agents, producers, universities, and private industry groups that contribute time, property, chemicals, and seed to conduct these field trials. Wheat market classes within these yield trials include Hard Red Winter Wheat (HRWW), Soft Red Winter Wheat (SRWW) and Hard Red Spring Wheat (HRSW).
During the 2018-19 wheat production season, Texas producers planted 4.5 million acres of wheat, unchanged from a year ago, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Texas wheat producers harvested 2.2 million acres for grain (up 26% from 2018), with an average yield of 35 bushels per acre.
The purpose of this publication is to provide unbiased yield data and disease and insect ratings for wheat producers across the state. Using this information, Texas wheat producers can make an educated decision concerning the most appropriate varieties for their geographic region.
Variety Selection: Selection of small grain varieties is one of the most important decisions a producer will make. This decision impacts potential yield (forage and grain), seed quality (test weight and protein), disease and insect management and maturity. It is important that producers diversify the varieties planted on their farms. Variety diversification spreads the risk associated with potentially devastating pests (leaf rust, stripe rust, Hessian fly, Wheat streak mosaic virus, wheat curl mite, greenbugs, etc.) and yield loss from adverse environmental factors (freeze, drought, etc.).
Producers are advised to select no fewer than 2 or 3 varieties to plant on their farms and preferably more, depending upon the size and location of fields. Variety selection should be based upon a combination of sound data from university trials and other reliable sources. Wheat varieties should be chosen based on multiple years of data (yield, pest resistance, grain quality and maturity). High yield over multiple years and multiple locations demonstrates a variety’s ability to perform well over diverse environmental conditions. Stable yield performance is an excellent variety selection tool. It is important to consider decreasing yields over a 2 or 3-year time frame, which may reflect a change in disease and/or insect resistance.
When selecting a variety for the 2019-20 season, producers need to consider multiple year averages, recognizing the unusual climatic conditions that impacted yield and quality over the past several years. It is strongly encouraged that producers look at the 3 and 4-year averages where available, and to look at numerous relevant variety trial locations.
There are typically 20+ wheat variety trials conducted across the state each year, and most of these contain analyses for multiple years.
Interpreting the Data: Yield and test weight at each location have been analyzed using appropriate statistical procedures. The statistical analysis provides the mean, CV, and LSD values. It is important to note these statistical values to prevent misinterpretation of any replicated data.
The mean is another term for the average. Therefore, a mean yield is the average of all plots within a trial. Individual variety yields can be compared to the mean yield to determine how these varieties performed within the trial (i.e. were they above or below average?). This average can also be used as an indication of the environment for that location. A low mean yield can indicate poor growing conditions were experienced in that season; likewise, a high yield average can indicate favorable growing conditions.
The CV (Coefficient of Variation) value, expressed as a percentage, indicates the level of unexplained variability present within the trial. A high CV value indicates a lot of variability existed within the trial not related to normal variations that might be expected between the varieties in the test. This variability may be the result of non-uniform stands, non-uniform insect or disease pressure, variability in harvesting, or other issues. CV values in excess of 15% signify that there were problems in the trial, leading the reader to question the validity of the data as a true representation of varietal performance.
The LSD (Least Significant Difference) value is a numeric range to help the reader determine if the varieties performed differently from one another within the trial. If the LSD value is 5 bu/ac in a trial in which Variety A yielded 36 bu/ac and Variety B yielded 30 bu/ac, then Variety A is said to be significantly better. In that same trial with an LSD value of 5 bu/ac at a 0.05 (5%) significance level, the statistical inference one could say is that Variety A would yield better than Variety B in 19 out of 20 trials conducted in which there was at least a 5 bushel difference in yield. In this hypothetical comparison, you might have a 20th trial with a 5 bu/ac difference that there is not truly a statistical difference between Variety A and B, but random chance caused the 5 bushel difference.
TEXAS HIGH PLAINS: Planting was delayed by fall precipitation across much of the High Plains, but fall moisture benefited early planted wheat resulting in good forage production for winter grazing. A dry, warm winter followed the wet fall resulting in producers dusting in late wheat as well as diminishing forage on wheat pasture. However, a cool, wet spring provided ideal conditions for crop development and an extended grain-fill period that resulted in record wheat yields across dryland and irrigated systems. Many producers were negatively impacted by severe hailstorms in May. Acres for wheat silage have continued to increase in response to forage demands from the dairy industry. Wet conditions in May prevented silage harvest in some areas, but producers were still able to take the crop to grain. Disease reports were relatively low considering wet conditions. Stripe rust, wheat streak mosaic virus and black chaff were reported in some areas.
TEXAS ROLLING PLAINS: The Rolling Plains season started with very wet conditions which lasted from September until the end of October. There were only a few days in October that producers were able to work in their fields due to the wet conditions. Therefore, planting was delayed until November or December for much of the region. Although field conditions from November to February were relatively dry across the Rolling Plains, precipitation received in March and April helped to increase yield potential.
TEXAS BLACKLANDS: Relentless rain delayed or prevented planting in many parts of the region. Slightly drier weather arrived in mid-January allowing for timely topdressing and herbicide applications. A cold front in early March resulted in below freezing temperatures which may have caused minor damage to early maturing or cold sensitive varieties. Bacterial streak and powdery mildew may have also reduced yields in some areas. Black chaff was reported in many areas as well. Spring thunderstorms continued throughout May and June which delayed harvest of some fields.
SOUTH TEXAS: The 2018-2019 growing season was one of the most difficult in recent memory for most areas of South Texas. After a hot and dry summer, steady rains began in mid-September which lasted into the spring. Saturated soils delayed or prevented planting for most of the region. Despite the abundance of rain, rust levels were not as high as may have been expected. Powdery mildew was also present at some locations on susceptible varieties. Conditions improved slightly in time for harvest while temperatures remained mild throughout May and early June.

The list of growers include those who have made application for inspection under the seed certification program. The majority of these growers have had several years of experience in the production of seed under the certification program.
In addition to field inspection, all Foundation, Registered, and Certified seed must also meet the requirement for other varieties and/or off types. Seed is not of the Foundation, Registered, or Certified class unless the official label is attached to the container. All Foundation, Registered, and Certified seed must be labeled in compliance with all provisions of the Texas Seed Law.
Orders for Foundation, Registered and Certified seed, therefore, can be accepted by the listed growers only with the understanding that they will be filled when the Foundation, Registered or Certified requirements are completed.
Inquiries or orders should be sent directly to the growers or seed dealers.
HOW TO USE THE DIRECTORY
Each variety will be listed with the available growers. Growers carrying certified see, registered seed and foundation seed will be represented by a C, R or F. Varieties are also marked by asterisks to represent their status within the Plant Variety Protection Act. They signify the following:
* This variety is protected by the United States Plant Variety Protection Act. Must have consent of owner for propagation.
** This variety is protected by Title V of the Federal Seed Act. Unauthorized Propagation Prohibited – To Be Sold By Variety Name Only as a Class of Certified Seed – U.S. Protected Variety.
