TEST TAKING SKILLSACT Prep

I. Test Anxiety

A. Definition – the displeasing feeling of fear or concern.

B. Some is good – too much is bad1. Pulled all-nighter studying for a test but

ended up doing a good job2. Hyperventilating during the test, almost

always leads to a lower scoreC. If you stress out during exams – here is

what to do:

1. Take a Reality Checka) Evaluate your situation before the test begins

1) If you have studied hard, remind yourself you are well prepared

2) If you have not studied hard, accept the fact that you will probably not ace the test

b) Don’t stress on how much you do not knowa) Your job is to score as high as you can –

maximize what you do know (make sure you get the ones you know RIGHT)

b) Game – how can you get the most points in the time allotted to you?

2. Try to Relaxa) Close eyes, take 2 slow, deep breaths,

concentrate on nothing but breathing3. Eliminate as many surprises as you can

a) Know where and when you are taking the test, what types of questions will be asked, and how long it will take

b) Learn everything you can about exam. The more you know the less you will be surprised.

II. PacingA big part of scoring well on any exam is

working at a consistent paceA. Tests are like Marathons

1. The worst mistake made is when you come to a question that stumps you and rather than skip it you panic and stall.

2. Don’t make that mistake (Cut your Losses)

a) You can always come back to a question you don’t know

3. Very true on multiple – choice testsa) REMEMBER: when all the questions on a

test are equal value, no one question is that important

b) Skip questions that give you trouble – come back when you have answered the others

III. On Test DayA. Start the day with a good breakfast

1. You will need energy for the exam.2. Beware of anything that will send you to

the restroom during the testB. Bring everything that you need
