What is a tessellation?• A tessellation is created when a shape is

repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps.

• Tilling is a different word for tessellation.

Types of Tessellations:• Line Symmetry• Rotation Symmetry• Translation

Line Symmetry• When a figure can be flipped or reflected

over a line and appears unchanged.

Translation• When an object is moved in a line without

turning or changing in size or shape

Rotation• Rotation is spinning the pattern around a

point, rotating it. A rotation, or turn, occurs when an object is moved in a circular fashion around a central point which does not move.

Shapes:Some regular shapes that can be turned into tessellations include:• Triangles (Equilateral, all sides the same)

• Squares

• Hexagons

Shapes Continued…Some examples of irregular shapes that can be tessellations are…• Arrows

• Rectangles

• Cross
