111 South Wacker ‘s 2016 Electronic Recycling

2,834 lbs. recycled

or 1.42 tons of e-waste

which is the equivalent of

111 South Wacker Electronic Recycling Drive

Currently 85% of unwanted electronics in the US

go into landfills

Need to recycle electronics? Post-it notes that specify “Electronic Recycling” can be placed on the item and a 360 work order can notify our cleaning staff

to pick up the item.

We hold an annual electronic recycling drive in late October, where we invite all tenants to do some fall cleaning and locate all of those un-used electronics.

*Personal items can be brought in for the drive as well.

111 South Wacker Electronic Recycling Drive

2. Please fill out the form on your tables - • Where will you station electronics ready to recycle? • Would you like a certificate?

ELECTRONIC RECYCLING DRIVE

111 South Wacker Battery Recycling

Why recycle batteries?

BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM

The material in batteries can be recycled to reduce our

consumption of vital resources such as steel, manganese, and zinc.

Only 10 to 12 percent of the 70 million pounds of

batteries sold yearly in North America are recycled

Did you know the sunscreen you applied this summer may have come from recycled batteries? The zinc in the batteries is extracted and used to provide protection from the sun!

111 South Wacker Battery Recycling

We have a few options for you if you would like to participate • In the Amenities Corridor (by the parking garage elevators) there is a drop off

bin

• Feel free to come to the 29th floor at any time and we have a receptacle in the Office of the Building

• If you would like to have your own bin, please contact Olivia and she can get you in touch with Independent Recycling

BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM

111SW DID YOU KNOW 111 HAS A COMPOST

PROGRAM?

111SW

How Does 111SW Compost? • Request a compost bucket to

be placed in your kitchen. • Janitorial Staff empties bins

nightly • All scraps go to Collective

Resources through Independent Recycling.

111 South Wacker ‘s

Since switching services to Collective Resources and your increased participation ; we have surpassed the Exemplary LEED

Diversion Percentage!

Our monthly composting went from 650 lbs (August 2015) to 3,250 lbs (July 2016)

• Woman owned-owned food scrap pickup service based in Evanston.

• Collect all food waste from homes, businesses, and institutions to a commercial composting site.

• Started with pick ups in a Toyota Camry but

Collective Resource’s customer base has grown to over 475 residential and 100 commercial customers.

• During the first 6 months of business we collected a singled ton and now we collect that in one single Day averaging 20 Tons per Week.

• In 2016 Collective Resources we celebrated a Total Collection Milestone of 2,000 Tons!

OUR GREEN JOURNEY

• People & Planet Award Winner Spring 2015

• Featured in Paste Magazine, WTTW Chicago Tonight, ABC7 Live Green, Crain’s Chicago Business, WGN Radio, and more!

OUR GREEN JOURNEY

Affiliations:

• Our service provides door-to-door pick up

• We provide a 5-gallon bucket to your family and pick up weekly or bi-weekly

• Positive habit to encourage

your family and a habit you can all do together

Residential

• Composting is an easy, effective way to add to the sustainability efforts of any restaurant, school, office, house of worship, or other institution.

• It diverts valuable resources

from the landfill and demonstrates a commitment to helping the environment.

• Additionally, composting may

even be able to save an organization money.

Commercial

• Commercial Composting is different because anything that was once alive can be composted.

• Your food scraps are mixed with grass clippings, leaves, Christmas trees, and food-soiled cardboard. Exposed to the sunlight, rain, and air, they break down naturally into a beautiful soil treatment.

Commercial Composting

Commercial Composting

It’s amazing how many things can be composted that we throw away everyday!

Next slide is a comprehensive list that is also printed on your seats.

Zero Waste Events

If food waste was a country, it would be third largest producer of greenhouse gasses

in the world after China and the U.S.

$218 billion is spent to grow, process, transport, and dispose of food that is never eaten!

40% of food in the U.S. is wasted!

In the USA, organic waste is the second highest component of landfills, which

are the largest source of methane emissions

Zero Waste Events

Think of all the food waste from fundraisers, weddings, festivals, family functions, or even your own staff functions. • We offer….

– personalized service – zero waste event consulting – staffing – compost education for any event large or

small – help to decide what kind of products are

used at your event

The Rebuilding Exchange Mission

• The Rebuilding Exchange’s mission is to create a market for reclaimed building materials. We do this by diverting materials from landfills and making them accessible to the public for reuse, promoting sustainable deconstruction practices, providing education and job training programs, and creating innovative models for sustainable reuse.

U.S. Nonfuel Material Consumption, 1900-2010

Matos, G. (2012) Use of Raw Materials in the United States From 1900 Through 2010. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Analyzed by U. Mich. Ctr. For Sustainable Systems

The Issues • Anywhere from 26-40% of

landfill materials come from construction and demolition

• Each year, 60% of all raw materials used in our economy are for new construction

• The amount of homes demolished annually represent 1.5 million trees
