New Handmade Lectern Dedicated on April 26th
Congregation members Richard and Ann Schamberger returned to Cleveland from
their home in Colorado to formally present Dick’s handcrafted lectern designed
for our Cantorial Soloist. Made of selected fine woods, the functional work of art
was made to complement the lectern Dick made for Rabbi Matt, and was inspired
by King David’s lyre. After the Shabbat service, the Schambergers joined congre-
gants at the Oneg to celebrate TINT’s newest addition.

Rabbi’s Message The week of the Boston Marathon, we read a double Torah
portion in Leviticus. The double portion is named Acharei
Mot-Kedoshim. The literal translation is, after death... holi-
ness. After we are touched by death... how do we re-
spond? We respond with holiness and with holy behavior.
What is there to say about the heinous bombings which
took place in Boston on Monday, April 15? We pray for the
victims and for their families. And we assert that this evil act
of radical Islamist terrorism will not weaken our resolve to
fight against evil.
Can the Torah bring wisdom which will comfort us? Is there a balm for our
wounded souls and broken hearts?
Yes. Leviticus 19:18 is a crown jewel of our tradition: v’ahavta lire’acha kamo-
cha -- thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
We are very familiar with this verse, and immediately after the bombings, we
learned a new way to look at it.
After those bombs exploded, we saw many people running away, but we saw
other people running forward into the carnage to give assistance. Those people ran
toward the danger to perform acts of loving kindness for neighbors whom they did not
know and whom they would probably never see again.
You may have seen the following in the International Business Times or the Dai-
ly Mail or the Boston Globe.
A woman named Victoria McGrath was hit by shrapnel from one of the
bombs. She was hysterical after the bomb exploded. She lay on the ground, near the
finish line, writhing in pain, amidst all the chaos and the confusion, the screaming and
the shouting. Somebody named Tyler, lifted her up and carried her to a medical
tent. And as he did, he calmed her. He introduced himself to her, and told her he had
been a soldier in the war in Afghanistan. He told her that he had been injured by
shrapnel, just like she was now. He lifted up his shirt and showed her the marks of his
surgery and reassured her, just as he had made it, so would she. Carefully, he placed
her on a cot in the tent, and rushed back to see if he could help someone else.
Victoria McGrath did not see him again, but she wanted to thank him. All she
could remember was “Tyler” and she did not know if it was his first or last name.
In the hospital, McGrath spoke to an NBC reporter, and to Governor Duval Pat-
rick, when he visited. She asked them both to help her find Tyler. NBC put the story
on its broadcast. The governor mentioned Tyler in his Tuesday interview: “I don’t
know whether this man was assigned to the medical tent that day, or whether he was a
volunteer who jumped in to help. But either way, we want to find him so that Victoria
McGrath, and all of us, can thank him for what he did.”
The Boston Globe ran a story titled: “Looking for Tyler.” After a friend of Ty-
ler’s saw the news story, he encouraged Tyler to come forward.
His name is Tyler Dodd. He had not come forward earlier, because he is
shy. He did not want to be in the limelight, and overshadow all the other good people
who did acts of rescue on that awful day.
Tyler, and others like him, help us to have faith in our fellow men and women, at
a time when we can become disheartened by the evil we have seen. Let us be com-
forted that Tyler Dodd, and others like him, came forward to fulfill this great verse in
Torah of Leviticus 19:18 -- v’ahavta lire’acha kamocha -- thou shalt love thy neighbor
as thyself.

Moishe Epstein was riding in a cab in downtown Brooklyn when he leaned over and gently tapped the driver him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then the shaking driver said, "Are you okay? I'm so sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me."
Badly shaken, Moishe apologized to the driver and said, "I didn't realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly."
The driver replied, "No, no, I'm the one who is sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab. I've been driving a hearse for 25 years."

From the President’s Desk
By Gerald Strom
Shalom.
This represents my first column as the ninth president of Temple Israel Ner Tamid. It is certainly an honor and a privilege
to serve you in this role. My wife, Susie, and I have been Temple members for almost ten years. We came here by choice,
to have the opportunity to celebrate holidays and life cycle events with our children, grandchildren, and our new temple
family. We were drawn to TINT by four key factors: the openness of thinking, the inclusiveness of families, the compo-
nent of tzedakah, and the hamishness that is our culture. We and our children were impressed with the values, openness,
and style that is Rabbi Matt. Our expectations were more then met when we were able to celebrate holidays with our
children and grandchildren. Having our four boys become a bar mitzvah and having Susie serve as their tutor and inspira-
tion further tightened a very strong family bond. What a Mitzvah this congregation has been for us.
Each of us has our own stories to tell and memories to keep. We all share a family of 300 who are willing to offer sup-
port to us all. TINT is a place where friends are made.
I mention this as a way to introduce my theme for my term as president. I invite you to join with Susie and me in
celebrating individual pasts and working toward our collective futures, both as individuals and as temple members.
TINT gives us many opportunities to explore and express our Judaism. Our size allows us the opportunity to be involved
up to our comfort level and beyond. Whether we make PB&J's on Friday night, serve our monthly dinner at St. Aloysius,
bring our children to religious school, feed our "pushke", come for the high holidays, come to sabbath services, attend
any or all of our four major fund raisers, seek out and use Rabbi Matt as your own spiritual leader and advisor, volunteer
with Marcie in our temple office, partake in one or more of our many tzedakah activities, or just come to schmooze.
We offer and welcome it all.
We are a reform congregation that is family centered and uphold the values of tzedakah and inclusiveness and both invite
and welcome your involvement in our dynamic Temple. Please seek out Rabbi Matt, board members, Marcie Oelbracht,
teachers, and fellow volunteers to help find and develop your individual nitch. Bring your hobbies, interests, and expertise
to share.
I look forward to having the opportunity to meet, talk, and grow with you
Rabbi’s Message, from Page 2
Remember the name of the double Torah portion? Acharei
Mot - Kedoshim. The literal translation is, after death... holi-
ness. After we are touched by death... how do we respond? We
respond with holiness and with holy behavior.
As we look forward to Shavuot, Confirmation, and into the
summer months, may each one of us strive to live these great
words of Torah. And when opportunities arise, may we recognize
them and act upon them.
Got a special event? Celebrate with a
Leaf for our Simcha Board
An engraved leaf is a lasting way to mark a special
celebration, like a milestone birthday or anniversary, a
birth, a bar or bat mitzvah, or even just an expression
of appreciation. We’ll get it engraved and hung up on
our Simcha Board in the Stark Family Social Hall.
Marcie Oelbracht in the Temple office has all the
information. Give her a call at 440-573-5120.

Bagels and Bible and More, Oh My! Concluding a successful adult education series on Jews, Music and Assimilation, on May 5 Cantor Larry Josefovitz will
tour the music of the Jews of the Spain and Portugal, the Mediterranean and North Africa. Just as Jews of European ex-
traction have enjoyed and contributed to the culture of the lands of our background, the Jews of the east have absorbed
and contributed to theirs as well. Listen to the taste of medieval Spain, and the exotic aroma of Morocco, through audio
and visual materials. Their uniquely beautiful customs and positivism- perhaps the result of a more tolerant environment
for longer periods- gave rise to a culture which may connect well with our own positive time and place. Examples will
include both historic and contemporary artists such as Israeli singer Yoram Gaon, and the path breaking Jo Amar.
A LETTER FROM MRS. KIM, OUR HIGH HOLY DAY CHOIR DIRECTOR Dear Rabbis Eisenberg:
It has been my great blessing, honor and privilege to have served as Director and Conductor of the Temple Israel Ner
Tamid High Holy Days Choir for the past thirteen years. It has been such a joy to make sacred music resounding in
your Temple during the season of High Holy Days. And I truly appreciate your support, enthusiastic reception and en-
couragement of your congregation, and the dedicated efforts of the choir members.
The Choir was given a precious opportunity to hold a public concert at the Cleveland Music Settlement as part of the
CMS Centennial Celebration program series on October 27, 2012, in The Glick Recital Hall that was filled to capaci-
ty. I had CD’s made of the concert. I dedicate to you and your Temple 100 CD’s in expression of my appreciation for
being part of your wonderful community. My husband Chin-Tai Kim, whose love and support have been essential to
my achievement with the Choir, joins me in this dedication. We hope that the CD’s can find good use for religious, ed-
ucational and fundraising purposes. And we pray that your Temple would continue to dwell in divine grace.
With our best regards,
Ok-Sim Nam Kim
Chin-Tai Lim
The CDs are being sold in Mae’s Gift Shop for $7.00 a piece. All proceeds will be placed in the Rabbi Fred Eisenberg Music Fund. Please stop by and buy two. One to keep, and one to give as a gift.

TINT Gets Ready to Wrap Up
Another Amazing Religious School Year. By Rabbi Matt Eisenberg
THANK YOU Religious School families for the gift of your 52 students. To those of you who volunteered, we are ex-
tremely grateful. It has been a very good year. We thank: Stefani Carlson, Hebrew Program Coordinator; Lynn Lustig;
Jan Tucker; Wendy Rosett; Cantor Larry Josefovitz; Liz Fertel; Susie Strom; Claudia Madden, and Rabbi Matt Eisen-
berg. Todah rabbah Nita Weltman for being a madricha, again this year. You are a very “sameach” -- a very happy --
face as we work on hebrew vocabulary with the Rabbi. Thanks to Marcie Oelbracht for keeping our attendance lists up-
dated and everything else.
On Sunday, May 19, the last day of Religious School, please register for our next school year, which believe it or not,
will start on Sunday, August 25, 2013.
This has been an extremely fulfilling and satisfying year. Here are some highlights and previews:
TZEDAKAH. This school year, we identified 4 places to donate our RS Tzedakah. In the fall, Hamas fired rockets
into southern Israel, which forced many Israelis to take refuge in bomb shelters. We collected $350 for the Interna-
tional Fellowship of Christians and Jews to help supply bomb shelters in Israel. In January, our Israeli teacher, Yu-
val Mordechai, went home to visit her family. We sent her as our emissary, on a tzedakah mission, to find a good
recipient. She carried our $100 bill and gave it to a group which helps people pay for dental care. After Purim, we
donated $350 to Magen David Adom, the Red Star of David.
This year’s final tzedakah recipient will be FIDF - Friends of the Israel Defense Forces - an organization which helps
injured soldiers and their families. At the time of writing, we do not know how much we have in our “Vortex of right-
eous giving.” We will collect tzedakah through the last religious school session and then send it to the FIDF.

Religious School,, continued from page 8
CEMETERY CLEAN-UP. On the first day of school, September 9, just before Rosh Hashanah 5773, the upper
grade students and parents, did acts of kindness at Lansing Cemetery. We cleaned, raked, trimmed, and recited the
kaddish. We have done a pre-Rosh Hashanah cemetery clean-up for 5 years, and will do it again next fall. Consid-
ering how early Rosh Hashanah falls -- Wednesday evening, September 4, 2013 -- we need to do this mitzvah, even
earlier, on Sunday, August 25.
JONAH’S BOAT RIDE. Every year, in synagogue, on Yom Kippur afternoon, we read the book of Jonah. In prep-
aration thereof, on the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we took a ride on the 55 foot long fishing
boat Holiday and learned Jonah. Talk about creative and experiential learning! We even had goldfish crackers for
snack. The “big fish” was made by Captain Wayne Bratton and his granddaughter. We will learn Jonah on the Hol-
iday again next fall on the Sunday between RH and YK.
TU B’SHEVAT SEDER / SHABBAT DINNER. Tu B’shevat (the 15th day of the Hebrew
month of Shevat) is Arbor Day in Israel. It is the new year for trees. In Israel, young and old
alike go out and plant trees. In Cleveland, in January, one cannot go outside and plant trees,
but we can do a Tu B’shevat Seder and Shabbat Dinner and learn about the importance or trees
and the Torah. We had an enjoyable and delicious seder on Friday, January 25. Stefani Carl-
son prepared several plates of fruits and nuts for the seder (photo right). Thanks to a generous
gift from the Lenore November Memorial Fund, a tree will be planted in Israel for each, and
every, religious school student and teacher. And todah rabbah to the Retreat Institute for
providing material and financial assistance with Jonah’s Boat Ride and the Tu B’shevat Seder.
MAKING MATZAH TOFFIE. The year, we tried to bake every month with Mrs. Susie Strom. Regularly, parents
came in to assist. In our newly renovated kitchen, and just after Pesach, we made matzah toffie.
PURIM and PIE THE RABBI. Sunday, February 24, we dressed up, sang songs, read Me-
gillah, and enjoyed a joyous Purim. For Purim tzedakah, we had the great joy of throwing
whipped cream pies at our Rabbi. Pie The Rabbi raised $350 for the ambulance service in
Israel, Magen David Adom, the Red Star of David. The Rabbi agreed to let us throw pies at
him, to raise tzedakah. Also todah to Mrs. Claudia
Madden, and our upper grade students, for creating
and working the Purim Carnival.
Left to right: The big check! IDF visitor
Amnon Yoram, Rabbi Matt, MDA executives
Cari Immerman and Barry Feldman, and our Israeli
teacher Yuval Mordechai with our donation.
PASSOVER MODEL SEDER. Sunday, March 17, was a beautiful spring day. Todah to Ms. Wendy Rosett for or-
ganizing the Model Seder.

HA-TIKVAH. At the end of each Religious School day, we play and sing HaTikvah. We have quite an assortment
of instruments, and we are always looking for more! In this picture you can see, saxophones, clarinets, drum, cello, a
whistler, guitars and many vocalists. Sometimes we have recorders, violas and trumpets, too. Instrumentalists from
left to right: Josh Levy, Tommy Grieshammer, Rory McBrady, Gavin Lever, Stevie Grieshammer, Maya Eisenberg,
Zach Levy, Bridgett Feldman, Rabbi Eisenberg, and Noah Levy.
And there’s still more to come!
ICE CREAM ONEG. Friday, May 10, please join us for the Teachers and Volunteers Appreciation Shabbat and Ice
Cream Sundae Oneg. This is a great chance to say “todah” to our teachers, aids, tutors, and volunteers. It is also a
great time to enjoy Mitchell’s gelidah (ice cream).
CONFIRMATION. On Friday, May 17, please come to Shabbat Services and wish Mazel Tov to our Confirmands
Andrea Adell, Allison Cook, Zoe Kurtz, Justin Leuchtag, and Nate Weltman.
PICNIC. Our last session will be Sunday, May 19. As usual, we will have shortened classes followed by a pic-
nic. Flyers will be sent home, watch your email, and check our FaceBook page. Keep an eye out for your weekly

A Word About Membership
Dear Fellow Congregants:
As the school year comes to a close, and the High Holy
Days approach, (particularly early this year on September 4th), this
is the time when many Jewish families are looking for a temple
which will help meet their religious and communal needs.
You can reach out and share the “haimishness” of your
congregation with them. Invite them to join you for a Shabbat Ser-
vice, or bring them to one of our activities, or simply share this
Temple IsraeLight with them. As a person who cares about the
growth and strengthening of our synagogue, please extend your
hand to others and invite them to enter our congregational family.
Shalom,
Mark Friedman
Membership Chair
Get Ready to Fly!
Join TINT’s June 2014 Trip to Israel!
“Next year, in Jerusalem!” At the conclusion of the Passover Se-
der we sing l’shannah ha’ba’ah b’yerushalayim - next year in Je-
rusalem. Soon, we are presented with an opportunity to fulfill that
prayer.
In June 2014, travel to Israel with our Rabbis. This will be a
meaningful and exciting, escorted tour of Israel going from Tel
Aviv to the Dead Sea to Jerusalem, with visits to Safed, the Golan
Heights, Masada, Yad VaShem, Haifa, our holy places and ar-
chaeological sites.
Very tentative dates: June 12-20, 2014
Very tentative pricing: land package $3500, airfare $1800 -- will
include hotel, some meals, motorcoach transportation and more.
If it is too early to establish dates and pricing, then why announce
the trip? To let you know as early as possible, because a trip of
this importance requires time for people to organize their calen-
dars and finances. FYI, the congregational trip in June 2009 cost
about $2500 land, $1800 air. By this summer we will have firm
dates and prices.
Call Rabbi Matt Eisenberg if you are interested, (440) 473-5120.
Ain’t it the truth…!
A penny saved is a government oversight.
The real art of conversation is not only to
say the right thing at the right time, but to
also leave unsaid the wrong thing at the
tempting moment.
The older you get, the tougher it is to lose
weight, because by then your body and
your fat have gotten to be really good
friends.
The easiest way to find something lost
around the house is to buy a replacement.
Did you ever notice: the Roman numerals
for forty (40) are “XL.”
If you can smile when things go wrong,
you have someone in mind to blame.
Hmmm. When you put the 2 words “The”
and “IRS” together, it spells “Theirs.”
When you are dissatisfied and would like
to go back to your youth, think of Algebra.
A prayer to remember: Lord, keep Your
arm around my shoulder, and Your hand
over my mouth.
You know you are getting old when every-
thing either dries up or leaks.
He who hesitates is probably right.
The sole purpose of a child’s middle name
is so he can tell when he’s really in trouble.
Being young is beautiful, but being old is
comfortable.
Long ago, when men cursed and beat the
ground with sticks, it was called
“witchcraft.” Today, it’s called “golf.”
