separate sheet of paper.
DIRTY HANDS By: Arsenio C. Jesena
Somewhere near the center of Mindanao is a place called Bobonawan. For a long time,
it was a lucrative logging camp, with the lumber exported mostly to Japan. The owners were
devout and religious people, that is why during the logging camp fiesta, there had to be a
mass.
I was the one invited to say the mass, maybe because I came from Manapla, and
spoke Hiligaynon, the predominant dialect of Bobonawan, or maybe because I was the only
one available to say the Bobonawan fiesta mass.
The mass was in the basketball court. The owners and the bosses were in front, and
the remaining 97% of the congregation stayed silent and subdued far, far back, because they
were not dressed well enough, and because they felt inferior, and unworthy, and they were
sure they did not belong.
I do not know what I said during the sermon. I hope it was short, interesting, and
relevant for my congregation. I hope I did not preach about the pie in the sky, by and by.
Everything went smoothly as expected. The Ilonggo hymns were beautiful, touching,
and were sung with deep and sincere feeling. After the mass, coffee, pandesal, puto and
bibingka would be served, then the basketball games would begin, and maybe even a little
bulang with all its excitement, would follow.
But the mass was not yet finished. We were still in the Amay Namon, which we sang
with all our heart. Then a little while later, it was time for Holy Communion.
The owners and the logging camp bosses stood up first, to receive the Body of the
Lord Jesus Christ.
I was impressed by this group. They knew all the responses to the prayers. They knew
when to sit and when to stand. They were all properly dressed. They were confident, orderly,
pious. They always knew what to do.

Question:
1. Is it good to have dirty hands?
2. What are the ways to have presentable hands?
Disclaimer: The pictures are used to put emphasis and to show concrete examples for deeper understanding of the lesson. The Department of
Education- Cebu Province does not claim or own the presented pictures. Links for the sources are found in the reference part of the module.
WHAT IS IT
Finally, it was the turn of the laborers to receive Holy Communion. They were shy. Did
not quite know what to do. Afraid they did not belong. For they were mostly unlettered, and
unchurched. Unpresentable, from head to foot. Hesitantly, they lined up and they cupped their
hands breast-high, to receive the Lord Jesus in Holy Communion.
I placed the consecrated hosts in their hands… THEIR DIRTY HANDS.
Hands that were unmanicured and unlotioned. Rough, Knobby. Calloused. But strong
hands. Working hands. Capable hands. Dignified hands. DIRTY HANDS. Like the hands of
Jesus Christ.
And I remembered the ageless words of John Patrick Delaney, S.J., when he told us
about the hands of his own father. His working man-father. When he honored his father’s dirty
hands.

What do you think the woman is doing? Is she doing an important step in hand and foot spa?
Why?
If you work in a hand and foot spa salon, you get to know some important things before you
get a satisfied customer.
First, we do visual checks. Look at the condition of the skin by examining the palms and the
backs of the hands. Check nails and cuticles for any signs of infection. Next, touch the hands.
Check if the skin is rough or smooth. Check for some cracks; infection; and color of the skin. Look
in between the fingers for any signs of irritation.
In a salon, you will be dealing with different clients or patrons. If it happens that you will
encounter skin condition like those shown in the pictures below, you must inform clients that their
hands are not serviceable in a subtle way and recommend to see a dermatologist for proper care.
Second, check hands and nails according to the policies and procedures of the salon.
Lastly, ensure that your client is safe and comfortable before doing the activity.
Types of Skin Disorders
1. Mycobacterial Infection. This infection can result from puncture
wounds; from fish spines or contamination of a wound or cut from
stagnant water (in nature or from aquariums). It will come on
gradually, and you may experience stiffness and swelling.
2. Bite Wound Infection. This can be caused by a human or animal bite due to bacteria in the mouth. Seek treatment immediately after a bite wound.
3. Cellulitis. This is a skin infection that can cause skin redness,
warmth, and pain. People with cellulitis may have a fever or feel
sick. Seek treatment immediately, as this infection can cause
serious problems.
4. Deep Space Infection. One of the compartments or “deep
spaces” of the hand can become infected even from a small
puncture. A pocket of puss may form at the base of the thumb, on
the palm, or between the fingers.

5. Felon. A felon results in a painful, throbbing fingertip. It can
occur after a gardening injury or activity involving sharp objects
near the fingertip.
6. Herpetic Whitlow. This is caused by a herpes virus that is seen
commonly in healthcare workers who are exposed to the virus. It
will result in blisters, usually on the fingers, that are small, swollen,
painful and blood-tinged.
7. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. This is a
bacterium resistant to usual antibiotics used to treat infection. It can
come from community places such as gyms, dorms or daycares.
Symptoms include lumps similar to boils, sometimes with puss.
MRSA can cause serious problems, so seek treatment
immediately.
8. Paronychia. This is an infection of the area around the fingernail. The skin around the nail will be red, swollen and tender. It can occur if your hands are frequently wet.
9. Septic Arthritis/Osteomyelitis. A wound near a joint can cause this infection. Urgent treatment will be necessary.
10. Tendon Sheath Infection. This type of infection occurs from a cut or wound in a finger. You may feel stiffness or even feel the tendon pop. The finger will be red, swollen and tender on the palm side.
