MAKING IT RELEVANT…

Which words in each stage, if used by you, would engage the student?

Which words would make the lesson more relevant to them?

Which words would enable them to retain the information quicker and better?

Which words would make your job more fun!

TEACHING ACTION VERBS

Coming up are some screen shots of a great website that I use to make my lesson about action verbs relevant.

I show the website in class and have the students make a list of action verbs that they could use on a cover letter to get a job.

TEACHING ACTION VERBS CONT.

I give them the openingTo Whom It May Concern:My name is _______ _______ and

I am interested in applying for the position of _______ that you have advertised.

The student then continues the paragraph using the action verbs they have chosen that illustrate his or her talents, skills, and abilities as they relate to the perspective job.

If they do not have any paid work experience I have them think about the skills they have acquired as a volunteer, or with their church groups, Boys and Girls Clubs, sports teams, and the like.

I explain to them that these are all “transferable skills” and have value in a paid job as well.

As you can see they can search by category or by alphabetical order.

There are so many more great tools on this website for your students as you can see from career resources, to job searches and posting their resumes.

MAKING IT RELEVANT…CONT.

Making it relevant is not that hard after all.

In the process they can learn how to use active verbs.

They may even get a job!

MAKING IT RELEVANT…THE FINALE

Now make this information relevant for you.

List three things you learned from this short tutorial that you can bring back to your classroom tomorrow.

Let me know how it works out and if we can share it with others that would be great!

Good luck!
