Academic Vocabulary • Morphological FamiliesDirections: Read the following passage from the short story “Dee’s Stormy Night.” Then answer the questions below.
The winds were growing stronger than expected, and Dee looked out the
window nervously. Weather forecasts on radio and television stations called for heavy rain. News programs predicted this would be the severest storm of the summer.
Dee knew that a storm like this could easily bring destruction. The last time there was a really bad storm, many roads flooded.
Grass and leaves had covered the storm drains, leaving the rain no place to go.
Suddenly, the lights went out. Just as Dee’s aunt handed her a flashlight, they heard a loud boom. A tree branch hit the front door! Luckily, the front door was not damaged. Wow! This is going to be some storm, Dee thought.
1. How does the base word destroy help you understand the word destruction?
2. What is an example of destruction given in the passage? Write it below.
3. How can you figure out the meaning of the word severest?
4. What is the meaning of damaged?
5. How are the words destruction and damage alike?
Read the writing prompt and follow the steps to complete the assignment.
Use the planner to organize facts and ideas about your athlete’s life and work. If you need more information on your athlete, ask a teacher for permission to search a Website or print source.

After you have written your biography, check your work. Use the checklist to evaluate your writing. Then make any final changes needed. Write a clean copy of your biography on a separate sheet of paper.

LINEAR MODELS.
Mathematical Goals
A fraction is written as the number of equal parts being considered (shaded, selected, meeting some criterion, and so on) divided by the number of equal parts in one whole. Determining the whole is important for under-standing fractions.
There are many ways to express a number as a fraction, such as 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, and so on.
Linear models are useful for representing fractions as numbers or fractions that involve continuous amounts like lengths.
Misconceptions Addressed
Writes a fraction as part-to-part instead of part-to-whole
Does not understand how fractions are represented in diagrams/models
Writes a fraction as whole-to-part not part-to-whole
Does not understand that fractions are numbers as well as portions of a whole
Materials Needed
Student Books and markers
Response boards and writing materials for each student
Show Me Cards UEF 4-1 through UEF 4-5
Scissors (one per student)
English ruler (one per student)
Optional Materials

You may also wish to post the partner work ritual so that you can reference it in problem 2.
Focus on Language
Model the use of these words and encourage students to use them throughout the lesson. Consider display-ing the words so students can see them as they work. Spanish cognates are in parentheses.
