Deep Ellum Complete Street ProjectsProject Background

2006 - Task Force created to developa Vision for Deep Ellum community;

2006 – Task Force envisioned (1)improved traffic flow that respectspedestrian and bicycle traffic; (2)streetscaping amenities; and (3)improved sidewalks for sidewalkcafes.

2006 – Bond Funds were earmarkedto calm traffic in the corridor andconvert Elm and Commerce fromone-way to two-way operation

2012 – City Council action toapprove the Elm and CommerceStreet two-way operation.

Complete Streets Design Manual

The City of Dallas adopted a Complete Streets Manual

January 27, 2016 directing all roadway projects to design

and build streets that are safe and comfortable for

everyone: all ages and abilities; motorists and bicyclists;

pedestrians and wheelchair users; bus and train riders

alike.

The Case for Bike Lanes

1. City of Dallas adopted the Bike Plan in 2011 to promote

cycling as a viable transportation modal choice.

2. Research has shown that dedicated bicycle facilities can:

Have positive impacts on local businesses

Increase property values

Provide greater mobility options

Interdepartmental staff review to gather information from various City departments and other agencies

Item to be considered and voted on by three bodies: 1) City Plan Commission Transportation Committee2) City Plan Commission (Public Hearing) 3) City Council (Public Hearing)
