TAKING THE NEXT STEP:COMPETITIVE SYNCHRO

WHY SHOULD I GO COMPETITIVE?

• MISSION: THE BC AQUASONICS WILL INSPIRE OUR ATHLETES TO BE AQUASONICS FOR LIFE: STRIVING FOR AND REACHING THEIR GOALS WITH DETERMINATION, PRIDE, PROFESSIONALISM, TEAMWORK, RESPECT, AND EXCELLENCE.

• WE WANT OUR ATHLETES TO USE SKILLS GAINED IN OUR PROGRAM THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES- NOT JUST AT THE POOL.

• IN RECENT YEARS, TWO MAIN CONCEPTS HAVE EVOLVED IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN CANADA:

• A) PHYSICAL LITERACY

• B) LONG-TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT

OVERVIEW

• PHYSICAL LITERACY

• LONG-TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT

• AT BCAQ ALL OUR COACHES STRIVE TO

INCORPORATE BOTH CONCEPTS IN TO THEIR PROGRAMS!

PHYSICAL LITERACY• WHAT IS IT?

• DEVELOPING FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT

SKILLS

• EXAMPLES:

• SCULLING, SWIMMING, EGGBEATER,

BOOSTING, FLOATING, SKIPPING,

BALANCING, ETC.

• WHY?

• IT INCREASES PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WHICH

INCREASES PERSONAL SUCCESS

PHYSICAL LITERACY

• CHILDREN NEED TO “PRACTICE THESE FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS FOR HUNDREDS OF

HOURS…WITHIN SPORTS CLUBS BEFORE THEY REACH PUBERTY”

• “WITHOUT PHYSICAL LITERACY, RESEARCH SHOWS MANY CHILDREN AND YOUTH

WITHDRAW FROM PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SPORT. CHILDREN REPORT THAT

NOT HAVING THE SKILLS TO PLAY IS ONE MAJOR REASON THEY DROP OUT”.

LONG-TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT

• “CHILDREN, YOUTH AND ADULTS NEED TO DO THE RIGHT THINGS AT THE

RIGHT TIME TO DEVELOP IN THEIR SPORT OR ACTIVITY – WHETHER THEY WANT

TO BE HOCKEY PLAYERS, DANCERS, FIGURE SKATERS OR GYMNASTS. LONG-

TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT (LTAD) DESCRIBES THE THINGS ATHLETES NEED

TO BE DOING AT SPECIFIC AGES AND STAGES”.-

There are seven stages within the basic LTAD model:

•Stage 1: Active Start (0-6 years)

•Stage 2: FUNdamentals (girls 6-8, boys 6-9)

•Stage 3: Learn to Train (girls 8-11, boys 9-12)

•Stage 4: Train to Train (girls 11-15, boys 12-16)

•Stage 5: Train to Compete (girls 15-21, boys 16-23)

•Stage 6: Train to Win (girls 18+, boys 19+)

•Stage 7: Active for Life (any age participant)

WHAT ELSE WILL MY DAUGHTER LEARN?

• TEAM WORK SELF-RESPONSIBILITY

• LEADERSHIP FOCUS

• GOAL SETTING CONFIDENCE

• TIME MANAGEMENT SELF-ESTEEM

• COMMITMENT MENTAL TRAINING SKILLS

LONG PRACTICES?!• SAMPLE 12 & UNDER DAY

• 15 MINUTE DECK WARM-UP (ON LAND)

• 10 MINUTE WATER WARM-UP

• 45 MINUTE TEAM TRAINING/CHOREOGRAPHY

• 5 MINUTE BRAIN BREAK (BATHROOM, GAMES, ETC)

• 30 MINUTE TECHNICAL TRAINING OR AEROBIC TRAINING

• 10 MINUTE BREAK (SNACK & BATHROOM)

• 50 MINUTE FINA FIGURE TRAINING

STATEMENTS FROM FAMILIES WHO TOOK THE NEXT STEP:

• “WHEN I FIRST HEARD ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF PRACTICE HOURS THERE ARE IN

THE COMPETITIVE PROGRAM, I WAS CONCERNED IF MY DAUGHTER COULD

HANDLE IT, BALANCING SCHOOL WHILE STILL HAVING A LIFE”.

• “THE THINGS MY DAUGHTER’S COACHES AND THIS SPORT HAVE TAUGHT HER

ARE WORTH WAY MORE THAN I COULD HAVE EVER HOPED FOR”.

• “THESE SKILLS - TEAMWORK, FOCUS, PRACTICE, STICK-WITH-IT-NESS,

COMMUNICATION AND ATHLETICISM ARE TOOLS SHE WILL CARRY THROUGH

HER LIFE WELL BEYOND HER SYNCHRO YEARS”.

STATEMENTS FROM FAMILIES WHO TOOK THE NEXT STEP:

• “TODAY WE ARE HAPPY WITH OUR CHOICE. SYNCHRO HELPS HER TO IMPROVE HER

CONCENTRATION LEVEL, SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND TO PRACTICE TOWARD GOALS. IT

HELPS DEFINE HER SELF-IMAGE; IT TEACHES THE LEVEL OF SATISFACTION THAT CAN BE

ACHIEVED THROUGH PERSEVERANCE, PATIENCE AND MENTAL PREPARATION. FIVE DAYS

A WEEK PRACTICE BOOSTS HER SENSE OF IDENTITY AND RAISE HER AWARENESS THAT

THERE IS A DIRECT CORRELATION BETWEEN THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT EXERTED AND THE

LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE OBTAINED”.

STATEMENTS FROM FAMILIES WHO TOOK THE NEXT STEP:

• “MY ADVICE WOULD BE TO MAKE THE TRANSITION SOONER RATHER THAN

LATER - I THINK SOME PEOPLE WAIT AND I THINK THAT IS MISTAKE. THE OLDER

THE GIRLS GET - THE MORE TIME; PRACTICES AND MONEY IT COSTS - THE

EARLIER YOU GET IT - THE MORE GRADUAL THE DEMANDS”.
