Dear Parents,As I stated in last week's letter. several years ago I started brainstorming ways to help ease the

transition to first grade for my sweet angels. In one of our prior reading series kits, we received somewonderful, leveled reading rnaterial for the children. Along with these fabulous books, the teachers

    a guide. The guide provides an 'instruction plan', plus an activity sheet, for each leveled book2 a - - - - - - - a.

., "linstruction plan' includes different sections to help create interest, guide reading, monitorP* comprehension, provide a skill to practice, and gives connection ideas.

My proposal is to send home one leveled book, along with the 'instruction plan' and activitysheet that accompanies the book plus a decodable text. I have created a 'homework' folder for each childto use and a check-off sheet to keep track with what books they have taken home. At the end of the vear, the children will be able to keep their folder, but until then. I would like for this to be used to carry these

between home and school only.Again, it is not required that you use these rvorksheets or that you return your child's completed

to school (unless, of course, they would like to 'celebrate' it with their peers). I am hopeful that if

*s. For families who wish to participate, on Monday I ivill start by sending home one book (however,, 1 the books might not be sent home in the order they are listed on the check-off sheet) , the 'instruction '

', the activity sheet, a decodable text, and the check-off sheet in their 'homervork' folder. Whenevorare done, please send back the two books and the check-off sheet in the folder. I will send home'

T$pther 'packet' in the folder that same day I will explain to the children that when they are finishedri,y$lth a book, it is their responsibility to place their returning 'homework' folder in the designated basket

their library book, Friday Folder, etc.) and when done, I can send home another assignment thatbfternoon.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. I look forwardto any feedback you might have, now or later, in regards to this plan! If you would like to participate inthis project, please fill out and return the bottom portion of this letter to school.

With much respect (for all you do),
