Tackling Health Inequalities• A simple but complex problem• Simple, because there is a straightforward
relationship between health and socio-economic status
• Complex, because – there are many different aspects to health– causal pathways are long and complicated– the levers are poorly connected– external factors can be more powerful– the timescales are too long
“Inequalities in health arise because of inequalities in society – in the
conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age.”
Tackling Health Inequalities – our plan
• Starts with the Strategy• 9 actions in Outcome 3• 4 actions in Outcome 2• for each action, what tasks
do we need to do, by when, to ensure that the action is completed in such a way as to have maximum impact on health inequalities?
Tackling Health Inequalities – questions
• Timescales – how long will it take to make a difference?
• Priorities – what actions will make the biggest difference, and when?
• How can the Health and Wellbeing Board add weight to what is already happening?
• What about the balance of spend?
Tackling Health Inequalities – agenda
• Two sets of round table discussions
• Each table to consider one action
• Have we identified the right tasks?
• What else could be done?• How can the H&WBB add
value?• How can you add value?
