NOTE TO THE READER
This publication—which accompanies thè exhibition "Post Zang Tumb Tuuum. Art Life Politics: Italia 1918-1943," conceived and curated by Germano Celant—arialyzes thè world of art and culture in Italy between thè two World Wars. Based on documentary and photographic evidence of thè tinte, it reconstructs thè spatial, social and politicai contexts in which thè Works of art were created and exhibited, both in public and in private, and thè way in which they were interpreted and received by peopleinthattime.
In addition to a text written by thè curator that narrates how thè methodology developed during thè research, thè volume contains fifteen essays that discuss contextual and historical discourses, and sixty-four case studies that focus on specific themes of thè exhibition, all written by scholars and theorists who offer historical, criticai and sociologica! approaches to thè subject, which is also examined in relation to other countries. Illustrations of case studies have been selected according to research conducted for thè exhibition by thè curatorìal department. All thè texts are linked through cross-references.
The publication also features thè originai Italian texts or translations, a Bibliography and thè List of exhibited Works and illustrations.
The iconographic section that opens thè publication presents a selec- tion of rendered photographic images—documents in which thè originai artworks related to thè show at Fondazione Prada have been inserted in color—that illustrate thè research methodology carried out.
In thè essays thè illustrations of Works and documentation are sig- naled by [ILL.] within thè text ìf they appear on thè sanie page and [ILL. P. #] ifthey are reproducedonpreviousorfollowing pages.
Case studies are illustrated with their related documents and artworks; contextual photographs (museums, galleries and exhibition installations, as well as interior views such as artist's studios, offiees, public buildings and private houses) are directly associated with artworks and/or objects, which appear according to their position in thè contextual photographic document.
Each illustration is accompanied by a short caption: artworks feature thè name of thè artist or maker, title of thè work, and execution date; documents feature adescription, geographical reference, and execution date. Complete captions for all thè illustrations including thè rendered images can be found in thè chronological List of exhibited works and illustrations. The final section contains thè installation views of thè exhibition.
