From Our Pastor

Weekly Reflection

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish is so pleased to welcome BIANCA ALVARADO, a counselor with our own diocesan Catholic Charities who will be available for counseling services here in our parish office 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. every other Tuesday beginning this past July 16, 2019.

Bianca Alvarado is a bilingual mental health clinician. She obtained her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Southern California and is in the process of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Bianca

provides counseling services to children, adolescents, adults, and families. As a bilingual mental health clinician, Bianca is culturally competent and has extensive experience working with the Latino population. She has also worked with individuals and families facing a wide variety of presenting issues such as childhood trauma, domestic violence, anxiety, and depression. She works from a holistic perspective that takes into account the whole person and acknowledges that no one is defined by their past or present life difficulties. She is passionate about helping everyone she comes in contact with to achieve a life of stability and peace with a spiritual foundation. She believes that through faith and with God at the center of services, individuals may thrive and improve their current circumstances.

Bianca will be available for appointments every other Tuesday. If you, or someone you know, would like to make an appointment, please call the intake coordinator (Lee Ann Pompeii) at Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington at (540) 371-1124.

Catholic Charities' Family Services, provides counseling services to individuals, couples, and families. They integrate the Catholic faith into their services, which are available to people of all faiths and backgrounds. They are committed to empowering clients to overcome emotional and/or behavioral obstacles that prevent them from realizing their full God-given potential. For more information you can also visit their web-site at: www.ccda.net/need-help/medical-and-counseling/counseling/. My hope and prayer is that many will be assisted with the help of Bianca and her colleagues, all in a manner that is consistent and supportive of our Catholic faith. Christ’s blessings to all, ~ Fr. Bashista

No Sensational Wonders

We easily get taken in by the sensational, and we wait for sensational events to strengthen our faith. But the sensational only reaches our senses. There are deeper levels where the senses cannot reach, and this is where faith is rooted. At this level, wonders happen all the time, but they aren’t visible or unusual. In fact, everything in creation is wonderful, the ordinary as well as the unexplainable. Saint Augustine tells us that the feeding of the five thousand wasn’t more wonderful than what happens every day in each seed, just a little more unusual. But, he adds, God does unusual things from time to time to wake up those who sleep. A dead person has been raised, and we all wonder about it. So very many are born every day, and no one finds that unusual. When we reflect more closely on it, we realize that it is a greater wonder that someone—who was not—is, than that someone who was, is raised. There is no need to be jealous of the disciples who daily experienced Jesus’ wonders and signs. You get to live in the “greater works” (Jn 14:12) which Jesus predicted. All wonders aim to communicate some of the risen power of Christ. But in the Eucharist, the resurrection itself is present and you may eat and drink the body and blood of the risen One. Jesus has said that the one who believes will move mountains. In the Eucharist, the Church gets to move all of heaven to earth. Is that not something “greater”?

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time “…I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of

God.” COLOSSIANS 1:25 We are all called to evangelize – to continuously grow in our relationship with Jesus and to share it with others. We may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look for opportunities to share our faith with those closest to us, like our family, friends and neighbors. Pray for the courage to share your faith the next time the opportunity arises.
