Notice
This Backup Exec Blueprint presentation includes example diagrams that contain objects that represent applications and platforms from other companies such as Microsoft and VMware. These diagrams may or may not match or resemble actual implementations found in end user environments. Any likeness or similarity to actual end user environments is completely by coincidence.
The goal of the diagrams included in this blueprint presentation is not to recommend specific ways in which to implement applications and platforms from other companies such as Microsoft and VMware, but rather to illustrate Backup Exec best practices only.
For guidelines and best practices on installing and configuring applications and platforms from other companies, please refer to best practice documentation and other resources provided by those companies.

Pain Points
4 Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages
Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages 5
• Massive Amounts of Critical Data
• Regulatory Requirements
• Tight IT Control Procedures
• Security Implications (including offsite copies of data)
• Accessibility Needs (data loss or audit events)
Backup Exec Blueprints: D2D2T Advantages Introduction: the need for reliable backup implementations
Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages 6
Backup Exec Blueprints: D2D2T Advantages Example diagram: typical D2T deployment
• Many Organizations Backup Directly to Tape Media (D2T) – Backup software dumps data to a tape device
– Backups run on a periodic schedule based on the critical-nature of protected data
• Tapes Stored in a Secure, Controlled (Usually Offsite) Location
• Problem: D2T Processes Not Optimized for Disaster Recovery

Backups transferred directly to tape
Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages 7
• D2T Backup Strategies Susceptible to Tape Failure: – Media errors, physical damage or loss, corrupt indices, among others causes
• Additional D2T Limitations Include: – Backups that span multiple tapes require personnel to be present during restores
– Restores from tape backup sets may fail causing data loss
– Reliability of large backups can be compromised by one bad tape, which renders all tapes in the batch useless
– Large RTO and RPO challenges associated with tape backups and restores
Backup Exec Blueprints: D2D2T Advantages Limitations and risks of direct-to-tape backup
Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages 8
In 2004, the Bank of America lost unencrypted tapes with account information on 1.2 million US federal employee credit cards, including US senators. The tapes went missing during shipment across the US to a remote site.
Backup Exec Blueprints: D2D2T Advantages Limitations and risks of direct-to-tape backup
In 2007, IBM lost an undisclosed number of tapes holding employee archival information "such as your Social Security number, your dates of employment with IBM, birth date, contact information such as your address, and your IBM work history."
In 2006, Chase Card Services (a division of JP Morgan Chase) notified 2.6 million current and former Circuit City credit card account holders that computer tapes containing their personal information had been inadvertently sent to the trash.
Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages 9
Unencrypted personal data on 600,000 current and former Time Warner employees from 1986 onwards went missing during shipment to the Iron Mountain data repository
Backup Exec Blueprints: D2D2T Advantages Limitations and risks of direct-to-tape backup
Tapes holding 3.9 million unencrypted consumer records of active and closed accounts went missing during shipment by UPS from CitiFinancial to credit reference agency in 2005.
Marriott Vacation Club announced personal data (including Social Security numbers, bank and credit card numbers) for over 206,000 employees, timeshare owners and timeshare customers featured on backup computer tapes "went missing" from the group's Florida office in 2005.
Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages 10
• Poor RPO (Recovery Point Objective) Capability – Tape backups typically performed at night or on weekends
– In the event of data loss, recovery limited to previous night’s or weekday’s tape backup
• Poor RTO (Recovery Time Objective) Capability – Tapes must be retrieved from an offsite location
– Involvement of mission critical applications or audit events can exacerbate problem
• Alternative Approach Needed – Because of the unappealing RTO and RPO presented by D2T backup schemes,
many companies looking for alternative approach

Introduction
11 Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages
Symantec Backup Exec™ Blueprints - D2D2T Advantages 12
• First Disk, Then Tape – Data initially copies to a disk storage system and then periodically copies to tape
– Enables fast backups and fast restores (disk is fast)
– Data archives (copies) to tape on administrator’s schedule
• Improved Offsite Disaster Recovery Protection – Enables compliance with regulatory policies for long-term data retention
– Relatively inexpensive

All servers are backed up to disk at the same time
Disk can be local to Backup Exec server or remote
Data is duplicated from the disk to tape
Backup Exec controls all stages; simplifies administration
Applies to protected physical and virtual server resources
Tapes can still be sent offsite
Disk offers backup and restore performance advantages

Backup Exec Blueprints: D2D2T Advantages Better Approach: D2D2T with Deduplication Option
• Server and Client Deduplication Backups Stored to Disk First
• Data Is Then Copied to Tape Devices – Just add tape stage in backup workflow
• Deduplicated Data “Rehydrated” Before Being Stored to Tape – “Rehydrated” = restoring original data from deduplicated blocks
