Sylramic™ SiC Fiber is a 10 µm diametercrystalline silicon carbide (SiC) fiber. It isnow manufactured by COI Ceramics, Inc.and is commercially available in tow orwoven product forms. Additional productinformation is provided on the other side ofthis brochure. Contact our technical staff at801.251.8111 or 801.251.8049 for deliveryneeds and pricing.

BACKGROUNDCOI Ceramics, Inc. (COIC) is the leadingsupplier of high temperature Sylramic™ andNicalon™ family fibers, and has beenmanufacturing ceramic matrix composites

(CMC) since 1999. Our San Diego facilityspecializes in Sylramic™ SiC Fibermanufacturing and customer-specific CMCmanufactured products. Our Salt Lake Cityfacility serves as the worldwide distributionand customer service center for ourceramic reinforcement products.

In 2003 COIC procured the intellectualproperty and equipment assets forSylramic™ SiC Fiber manufacturing and hassince invested in facilitization andequipment set-up/checkout.

In mid-2003 the Airforce ResearchLaboratory (AFRL), Materials andManufacturing Directorate, contracted withCOI Ceramics for the revalidation ofSylramicTM and SylramicTM-iBN. Sylramic™SiC fiber process validation lots have beenmanufactured and property test resultscompiled. The COIC Sylramic™ SiC Fiberis statistically equivalent to the historicalfiber database COIC’s SylramicTM Fiberproperties database is available on request.

Under the AFRL, Materials andManufacturing Directorate Program, COICeramics is working in collaboration withNASA to demonstrate and validate the in-situ Boron Nitride (iBN) process developedby the NASA Glenn Research Center,Ceramics Branch. Sylramic™-iBNcommercial availablility is planned for early2005.

USESSylramic™ SiC Fiber is used as reinforcementin structures such as ceramic, plastic, andmetal matrix composites. These products areused in severe environments such as aircraftand land-based turbine engines, hypersonics, thermal protection systemsand chemical manufacturing. Sylramic™SiC Fiber is used as a composite reinforce-ment to increase the part strength, tough-ness, and high temperature creep resistance.

PRODUCT FORMSylramic™ SiC fiber is a textile gradecontinuous tow (yarn) made up of 800filaments with a denier of 1600. Eachfilament is 10µm in diameter and is coatedwith a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sizing forimproved handleability.

Sylramic™ SiC Fiber TowContinuous tow is supplied on 3 inchdiameter cardboard spools. Lengths up to800m (145g weight) are available. Towlength may vary depending uponavailability and customer requirements.

Sylramic™ SiC Fiber, WovenCloth is available in standard weaves suchas plain (PW), 5 harness satin (5HS) and 8harness satin (8HS). As a textile grade yarn,Sylramic™ SiC Fiber can be readilyincorporated into a variety of weaves, woven tapes, braids, etc. A network of UScontractors exists to respond to your exactneeds. Contact COI Ceramics to discussspecifics and receive further information.

SPECIAL PROPERTIESSylramic™ SiC Fiber has excellent roomtemperature strength and stiffness. The fiberhas excellent creep resistance, maintainingstrength and stiffness for extended times atextremely high temperatures (1400C[2252F]). These fiber properties are due toits chemical composition, crystallinestructure, small crystal size, and very lowoxygen content. This also allows it to haveexcellent wear and corrosion resistancecapability. See Table 1 for typical propertiesand composition data.

Sylramic™ SiC Fiber overcomes thedisadvantages of other materials. Oxidefibers and superalloys may lose theirmechanical properties above 800C(1472F). SiCO fibers lose their mechanicalproperties above 1000C (1832F).Amorphous SiC fibers lose their mechanicalproperties above 1200C (2192F). Largerdiameter (100µm), crystalline SiC fibers arenot easily woven.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATIONProduct safety information required for safeuse is not included. Before handling, readthe Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). AMSDS is available from COI Ceramics.

LIMITED WARRANTYCOI Ceramics believes that the informa-tion contained herein is an accuratedescription of the typical properties anduses of the products, but it is your respon-sibility to test the material to determine itsperformance and safety for your applica-tion. The sole warranty is that the productmeets current material certification pro-vided with each delivery. COIC specifi-cally disclaims any other express or im-plied warranty.
