begins in the brains of tiny tots. Complex cosmologies unfurl from the tips of greasy crayons held by awkward small fists. As we mature, many of us give up these fancies, but the artist must never lose the impulse, and indeed he or she must take the process even deeper.…
The “archetypal imagination” must be used by all figurative painters and illustrators for their images to have true resonance. In the archetypal, there is meaning that communicates to all and touches us in some way: whether it be a picture of a puppy, a monster, or the graphic sight of blood. By understanding a visual vocabulary, an artist then can form a language that will communicate their vision of the world.
At first, while learning, young artists mimic with myna-like skill, but as they develop they will incorporate those private fantasies from childhood and blend them with our collective image bank, and slowly but surely, they will be a real picture maker!
The faculty loves to help these young artists on this journey. They have trod the same overgrown paths, and gathered wildflower bouquets of pictures that speak of our human condition and of our times.
We are so proud of what these young artists have made. Far from tiny tots, they have created works of great sophistication for all to contemplate and enjoy!
I would like to thank the Senior Portfolio Illustration and Cartooning faculty who helped in the selection process; Steve Brodner, Chris Buzelli, T.M. Davy, Frances Jetter, Marvin Mattelson, Keith Mayerson, David Mazzucchelli, Gary Panter, Carl Potts, Yuko Shimizu and Jillian Tamaki.
