Cabin in Cana
Located in the piedmont region of North Carolina, the town of Cana
has a number of standing buildings from the turn of the 20 th century.
Many of these buildings, both public and private, utilize the front porch
as a gathering or entertaining space. The notion of a programmatically
interstitial space became the driving idea behind this two-room cabin.
The kitchen and entertaining space opens up fully to an extended
front porch, welcoming company to the cabin and extending the
threshold between public and private spaces.
An introductory exercise for the semester, the cabin was intended
to serve as part of a larger vineyard complex on a 170-acre site of
rolling hills, meandering gravel roads, and dense deciduous forest.
The transition between the public front porch space and the private
sleeping space recalls the sense of compression and release
experienced by the closing in and opening up of the forest walls as
one drives through the site.

Showroom + Regional Headquarters
Morgan and Hillsborough Streets provide two major east-west
thoroughfares into the city center, but in conjunction with the railroad
tracks, they tend to divide the surrounding areas of Glenwood South,
Boylan Heights, and the Warehouse District. This building attempts to
minimize this division by identifying itself with Glenwood South, and
by drawing this area’s activity as far south as Morgan St, a primary
pedestrian route between the Warehouse District and Boylan Heights.
The program describes a mixed-use building to act as a showroom
and regional headquarters for an independent electric automaker.
The building provides a display showroom, sales area, and offi ces,
as well as a café on the ground fl oor. A central corridor continues
the street edge from Glenwood South, and provides the primary
means of circulation through the building. Volumes of offi ce space are
suspended from this corridor, and are protected from direct east and
west sunlight by computer-controlled shading devices. Glass panels
use a matrix of darkened quartz crystals to prevent glare, a technology
currently being developed by the automotive industry. These large
planes can be programmed to help convey visual information, such
as images of the client’s cars, or a digital corollary to the shimmer wall
of the convention center at the city center’s southern gateway.warehouse district
