SURTREAT

FROM MATERIALS PERFORMANCE – NACE MAGAZINE

Presented by US Army Corps of Engineers

New, properly constructed 2-inch concrete cover (ph 13) will inhibit corrosion of rebar. This alkalinity will decrease overtime from carbon dioxide and other acidic materialspenetrating the concrete and reducing the pH to below 11, atwhich point the natural corrosion inhibition is lost. If airand water contact the rebar, corrosion will take place, asCO2 absorbed from the atmosphere decreases the pH.Another main source of corrosion is due to chloride ions. The resulting corrosion products expand and causethe concrete to degrade and spall.

CONCLUSION FROM NACE ARTICLE

The data obtained in this work shows quantitatively thatthe PCIS application significantly reduced the corrosionrate of the rebar on tested structures. Measurementsbefore and after application indicated projected corrosionrates were reduced by a factor of 3.5 for the penetratingcorrosion inhibitor. It can be projected that the servicelife of these structures has been extended by more than10 years based on the short-term data collected duringthis work.
