SURGERY OF THE TRACHEA AND BRONCHI

By Hermes C. Grillo, BC Decker, Inc., Hamilton,Ontario, Canada, 2003, 992 pp, $208.95

Many thoracic reference books lack detailed and

dedicated but readable sections on tracheal/bronchial

surgery. Indeed, as Dr. Hermes Grillo mentions in his

acknowledgment in Surgery of the Trachea and Bron-

chi, tracheal surgery crosses anatomic boundaries and

spans multiple surgical specialties. Therefore, it is

important for well-trained and knowledgeable head

and neck and thoracic surgeons to be well educated on

tracheal and bronchial surgery. Surgery of the Trachea

and Bronchi meets the challenge for a comprehensive

textbook for understanding and performing tracheal

and bronchial surgery.

Surgery of the Trachea and Bronchi is a well-

organized textbook with great style and flow in its

presentation. This textbook covers the alpha to omega,

beginning with the essentials of anatomy and physiol-

ogy, proceeding to disease states both for children and

adults, and concluding with the current treatment and

techniques. I was especially pleased to see a chapter

dedicated to tracheal stenting.

The textbook is highly readable and excels in the

medical illustration department. The variety of illus-

trations, including imaging photographs, graphs, and

schematics, are used in an efficient manner to aid the

reader in understanding the corresponding content. In

addition, the variety of subspecialties represented com-

bined with the experience of the contributors adds to

the credibility and usefulness of this textbook.

I found this textbook highly informative, well or-

ganized, and enjoyable to read. Surgery of the Trachea

and Bronchi is a valuable asset to and possibly a ‘‘must

have’’ for head and neck and thoracic surgeons alike

who intend to include tracheal and bronchial surgery

in their practice.
