Wheeling Symphony Celebrates Art of Cartooning As a Way to Bring Younger Audiences into the Fold

TheWheelingSymphonyisfindingcreativewaystobuilditsaudience.ExecutiveDirectorBruceWheelersaiditsmostsuccessfulventuretodatewasitsspringperformanceofBugs Bunny at the Symphony II,aliveorchestraperformancethatwasaccompaniedbyclassicWarnerBros.cartoonsshownonalargescreen. “Itwasourlargestaudiencethisseason,”Wheelersaid.“WenearlyfilledtheCapitolTheatre,”whichseatsabout2,400. ManyAmericanswereintroducedtoclassicalmusicbywatchingcartoonsbecauseearlycartoonstudiosincorporatedclassicalmusic,popularmusicandoriginalcompositionsintotheiranimatedshorts.Forinstance,theRabbit of SevilleisaspoofofGioachinoRossini’sThe Barber of Seville.

Rhapsody RabbitfeaturesFranzLiszt’sHungarian Rhapsody No. 2,andWhat’s Opera, Doc?featuresRichardWagner’sRide of the Valkyries. TheconcertcoincidedwithOglebayInstitute’sToontastic! exhibitattheStifelFineArtsCentertocelebratetheartofanimationandsomepopularcartoons.Theexhibitfeaturedmorethan80piecesfromWheelingorthodontistDanJoseph’sprivatecollectionaswellasthecollectionofcartoonistJoeWos.For13years,WoswasavisitingresidentcartoonistattheCharlesM.SchulzMuseuminSantaRosa,California,andisthefounderandformerexecutivedirectoroftheToonSeum,Pittsburgh’smuseumofcomicandcartoonart. Symphony’s Selfie Station a Smash Hit TheWheelingSymphonyisusingsocialmediatopromoteitselfandbuildaudiences. ASelfieStationinstalledintheCapitolTheatrelobbyallowspatronstotakephotosofthemselvestosharewithfriends.TheSymphony’ssocialmediaadministratoruploadsthephotostothesymphony’sFacebookpageandadigitalbillboardoutsidethetheater,sopatronscanseetheirphotosastheyleave. ThisstationhasbecomeahighlightoftheSymphony’spre-concertandintermission,allowingittoreachFacebookaudiencesofallages.

workshops,schoolprogramsandacartoonfestivaltocoincidewiththeconcertandexhibit. ThecomplementingarteventsweresponsoredbytheWheelingSymphonySocietyInc.,OglebayInstitute,theWheelingNationalHeritageAreaCorporation,WestLibertyUniversityandothers. Thecollaborationwasinkeepingwiththesymphony’sgoalof

increasingthenumberoffamilyorientedconcertsitpresents,andhelpedtobuilditsbaseofsupportersbybringingyoungerlistenersintothefold. The86-year-oldsymphonyhaspresentedanumberofconcertsoflatewiththesamegoal,includingCirque de la Symphonie, Symphony on Ice,aYoungPeople’sConcertTour,apopseries,andacollegeseries.

studentstolearnaboutgreatpoetrythroughmemorizationandperformance. WhileinD.C.,theNationalEndowmentfortheArtshonoredthestateofWestVirginiaforitseffortstoenhancethisyear’sstatecontestbyintegratingadditionalartslearningexperiencesintothecompetition.WestVirginia’sPOLcoordinatorJimWolfewasaskedtoinformotherstatecoordinatorsvisitingthenation’scapitalabouttheopportunitygiventostatefinaliststoattendaspecialartexhibitandreceptionatTheClayCenterfortheArtsandSciences,whererenownedartistMarkLicaritalkedabouthisworkondisplay. Inapresentationtitled“BeyondtheCompetition,”WolfealsotalkedaboutstatefinalistsbeinggiventheopportunitytocollaborateonandperformanoriginalsongwithMiraStanleyandChuckE.Costaofthefolk-popduoTheSeaTheSea. Forsomestudents,itwastheirfirstvisittoanartgalleryandtheirfirstchancetotouchahand-madeworkofart.Byawardingthesespecialitemsandexperiences,ArtsDirectorRenéeMargoceesaidtheWestVirginiaDivisionofCultureandHistorywantedtogiveeachstudentaveryintimateandintensiveartexperienceinthehopesofsparkingornurturingalifelonginterestinandsupportforthearts.

‘Adrift’ Premiere A Collaboration of West Virginia Artists

TheWestVirginiaDivisionofCultureandHistoryhostedtheAprilpremiereofAdrift,auniquecollaborationamongWestVirginiaPoetLaureateMarcHarshman,CharlestonnativemusicianandcomposerAdamPlantz,choreographerJerryRoseoftheBeckleyDanceTheatre,theWestVirginiaYouthSymphonyledbyMaestroBobTurizziani,andselectdancersattendingthe2015WestVirginiaDanceFestival. HarshmansaiditwasinterestingthatPlantzchosehispoem“Adrift”tosettomusicbecauseitis“verymuchamoodpiece,”andthoughHarshmandoesn’tconsiderhimselfalyricalpoet,“Iwasreallyhearingit.It

wasmusical,thewayIputthewordstogether.” PlantzsaidhismusicalcompositioncarriesacertainfolkqualitytoitwhilethemelodyseekstorepresentthecomfortandfamiliarityofHarshman’simpressionsoflifeamongtheWestVirginiahills. Rose,whoisknownasthe“FatheroftheWestVirginiaDanceFestival,”originatoroftheWestVirginiaBalletFestival,andaformersoloistwiththeCharlestonBallet,saidhisinterpretationofthepiecerevolvesaroundtheideaofawanderingmind,daydreamingandtheideathat“perhapsyourdestinationinlifeisadrift,”butsomewherethere’sananchor“tokeepyoufromgoingofftheedge.” Rose,forwhomtheDivisionofCultureandHistoryestablishedacontinuingscholarshipfor

outstandingdancersin2011,saidheincludedsometraditionalaswellasunexpecteddancecomponentstothepiecewhilecapitalizingontheuniquetalentsofthe16featureddancersfromBuckhannon,Charleston,Clarksburg,Huntington,MorgantownandParkersburg. TheWestVirginiaYouthOrchestrabroughtthepiecetolifeunderthedirectionofTurizziani,founderandmusicdirectoroftheSenecaChamberOrchestraandthemusicdirectoroftheRiverCitiesSymphony.HeistheprincipalclarinetistoftheWestVirginiaSymphony,andunderhisdirection,theYouthOrchestrahasmadethreeinternationaltrips:Prague,Vienna,andcentralEuropein2000,ItalyandAustriain2006,andHungary,Poland,Austria,andSlovakiain2012. Thedivisioncommissionedthe

pieceinJune2014.ItwascompletedinFebruary.Itspremierewasheldduringthe33rdyearoftheWestVirginiaDanceFestival,whichshowcasesthetalentofmorethan400WestVirginiadancerswhocometoperformandtakeclassesfromanationally-acclaimedfestivalfaculty. Harshman,astoryteller,authorandformerteacherfromWheeling,becamethestate’sninthpoetlaureatein2012followingthedeathofIreneMcKinney.HeperformedhisfirstmajorcommissionaspoetlaureateduringWestVirginia’s150thbirthdaycelebrationonJune20,2013.Hereadhiscommemorativepoem,“ASongforWestVirginia,”duringanniversaryeventsinhishometownofWheelingandatthestateCapitolinCharleston.

PlantzreceivedaMasterofMusicinCompositionattheUniversityofHouston,MooresSchoolofMusic,aftergraduatinginMayof2013fromWestVirginiaUniversitywithaBachelorofMusicinCompositiondegree.Plantz,whoplaystrumpetandpiano,traveledtoBerlin,Germany,duringthesummerof2011tostudycompositionattheFreieUniversität,BerlinwithSamuelAdleroftheJuilliardSchoolandconductingwithEmilyFreeman-BrownofBowlingGreenStateUniversity. Rosehasperformedwithnumerousballetcompaniesandin1987appearedwithactorPatrickSwayzeinthemovieDirty Dancing.HischoreographycreditsincludeHoney In The Rock, Hatfields and McCoys,andLittle Mary Sunshine,amongothers.

andgifted/talentedcoordinator,startedtheprogramin1996afternoticingthatgirlstendedtolosetheirenthusiasmandpositiveoutlooksinmiddleschool.Shewantedtohelpthembuildtheirself-confidenceandbecomebetterpreparedforbrightfutures. Throughthearts,HighRocksgirls“learnmoreaboutthemselvesandtheworldaroundthem;theylearnnewartisticskills,formanewrespectforcraftsmanship,buildtheirpersonalidentity,anddiscoverinnovativetoolstoexpressthemselves.Weareeducating,empowering,andinspiringtheircreativevoice,”RileywroteinarecentapplicationforfundingfromtheWestVirginiaDivisionofCultureandHistoryandtheCommissionontheArts.

Inthepastfiveyears,HighRocksEducationalCorporationhasreceived$40,453ingrantsfundedbytheWestVirginiaLegislatureandtheNationalEndowmentfortheArts.Mostofthatmoneycamefromthedivision’sArtsinEducationgrantprogram,andwasusedtohelppayartiststoteachgirlsstorytelling/mediaproduction,printmaking,variousformsofcreativeexpression.Thegrantalsohelpedtoproduceamathmusicaltheater,anartist-in-residenceprogramandaseriesofafter-schoolworkshopsthatfocusonsongwritingandAppalachianmusic. Eighth-gradegirlsparticipatingintheNewBeginningscampinJunebuildtheirconfidenceandcommunicationskillsbysharingtheirthoughts,talkingabout

relationships,andspendingtimeinprivatereflection.Theyalsoengageininnovativeprogramsthatexploremath,science,writing,horsebackridingandgames. InJuly,graduatesofpreviousNewBeginningscamps–ninththroughtwelfthgraders–returntoHighRockstofollowspecialtytracks,like“MathandArt:TheGoldenMean,”whichfocusesonmath,aesthetics,art,andtheoriesoftheuniverse. OneofHighRocks’uniqueprograms,mathmusicaltheater,touchesontheconnectionsbetween

mathematicsandmusictheorybyteachingthemathematicalnatureofrhythms,patterns,scales,andharmonies.Thegirlsthenapplytheseideaswhencomposingsongsaboutmathematicalrulesandconcepts,andadddramaandvoicewhenpresentingandrecordingtheiroriginalworks. Duringnightlycampfires,thegirlsdecoratejournals,respondtocreative-writingandvisual-artprompts,createmixedmediaprojects,collaborateonwritingsongsandpoems,andperformsongs,

music,poetry,originalplaysandskits. Campersalsotrytheirhandatpainting,sculptingclayandotherartmediums.Eachgirlalsospendsanightaloneinthewoodswithasleepingbag,threematches,abottleofwater,andasmallbagoffood. Duringtheschoolyear,thegirlsreceiveindividualizedafter-schooltutoringandareinvolvedincommunityserviceprojects.HighRocksgirlsalsoreceivecounselingforsettinglifegoalsthatmayincludecollegeandcareers. Thefriendshipsthegirlsdevelop–andtheknowledge,confidenceand

inspirationtheyreceive–staywiththemlongaftertheyleavecamp. “IfoundsomeplaceIcanbeme,”onecamperwroteinherevaluation.“Ihavemoreself-confidenceandcandowaymoreamazingthingsthanbeforeIcametocamp.I’mabetterandstrongerperson.” Rileysaidakeytotheprogram’ssuccessisrecruitinganddevelopingrelationshipswith“artistswholoveteachingasmuchastheylovetheirartform.”Artistswhoaremotivatedbymakingadifferenceinyoungpeople’slivescanworkwondersinhelpinggirlsfindandusetheirownvoicestoexpressthemselves. Makingappropriatechangesbasedonfeedbackfromthegirlsaboutwhichteachingartists,programsandactivitiestheyweremostdrawntoiscriticaltoensuringtheprogram’ssuccess,shesaid. “Iftheyarenotenjoyingitandlearningfromit,trysomethingelse.”

Barter Theatre’s Project REAL Is Making a Difference in McDowell County

InclassroomsatRiverViewHighSchoolandMountViewHighSchoolinMcDowellCounty,studentsaregettingupoutoftheirseats,clearingtheirdesksoutoftheway,moving,creatingandlearningthroughimplicitlearningtechniques. Workingwithschooleducators,BarterTheatre’sProjectREAL

(ReinforcingEducationthroughArtisticLearning)providesqualifiedteachingartistswhousetheatertechniquestogetstudentstolearnbyreflectingontheirlivesandconnectingtheirexperiencestomath,science,Englishorsocialstudies. “Ireallyenjoyhavingthechancetodosomethingdifferent,tonotbesittingatmydeskreadingabookorworkingontheboard,”remarkedonestudentoftheAbingdon,Va.,theater’sprogram.“It’sreallymemorableandreallyhelps.” EachProjectREALclassbeginswithawarmupthatincorporatesdynamicmovingandbreathingtoolstogetthestudents’bloodandoxygenflowing.Alongwithdynamicmovements,thestudentslearnthreeorfourvocabularywordseitherthroughphysicalexpressionorsocialinteraction.

Next,studentsengageinanactivitythatfocusesonconnectingtheiremotionallivestothematerial.Forinstance,studentslearningaboutmass,volume,anddensitycreatetheirowneulogiesbyfocusingonthemassthatequalshowmanyactivitiestheyexperiencedintheirlives,volumethatequalsthespacetheytookupwhentravelingandlivingathome,andthendensitythatequalstheeffecttheyhadbasedontheirmassandvolume. Oncetheycreatetheireulogies,studentstaketurnsreadingeachothers’eulogieswhilethatpersonliesonatable,whichrepresentsthecoffin.Studentswhoarelisteningtotheperson’slifemustidentifythemass,volume,anddensityinthatperson’slife,whichleadstoaconversationaboutwhattypeofpeoplehavethegreatestdensityandbiggestimpactonothers. Studentsalsoengageinactivitiesthathelpthemapplytheirknowledgeofthekeyconcepts.Inthiscase,groupsofstudentspretendtheyareonasurvivalshowandgetachoiceofitemstotakewiththemontheisland;however,tousetheitemtheymustidentifythemass,volume,anddensityofthoseobjects. ProjectREALismakingarealdifferenceinMcDowellCounty.Assessmentsshowstudents,particularlymathstudents,performsignificantlybetterafterparticipatinginProjectREALactivities.Onaverage,mathscoresimprovedbynearly40percent. TheWestVirginiaDivisionofCultureandHistoryandtheWestVirginiaCommissionontheArtsawardednearly$2millioningrantstohelprestoremorethanathirdofthehistorictheaterslistedontheWestVirginiaHistoricTheaterTrail. Andthatdoesnotincludemillionsmoreinstategrantsthatsupportedartsprogramminginthesestunningvenuesovertheyears. Eachyearmorethan6,000schoolchildrenfromacrossWestVirginiavisitHeritageFarmMuseum&VillageinHuntingtontolearnabouttheirAppalachianheritagethroughlivesheep-shearing,blacksmithing,pottery-making,timbercuttingandplentyofpickin’n’grinnin’. Now,HeritageFarmispoisedtoprovideevenricherhands-onlessonsaboutourAppalachianheritageasWestVirginia’sfirstSmithsonianInstitutionAffiliate,adistinctionthatprovidesthefarmwiththeresourcesandlearningopportunitiesavailablethroughtheworld’slargestmuseumandresearchcomplexbasedinWashington,D.C. Asoneofmorethan190Smithsonianaffiliatesinmorethan40states,PuertoRicoandPanama,

West Virginia Author Selected for Creative Fellowship WestVirginiafictionwriterNatalieSypoltofKingwoodwasselectedforatwo-weekresidencyattheVirginiaCenterforCreativeArtsinSweetBriar,Virginia. Eachyear,theCreativeFellowshipprovidesresidencyopportunitiesforartistsfromtheMidAtlanticArtsFoundation’sninestateandjurisdictionalpartnerstosupporttheworkofcomposers,literaryandvisualartists.Eachfellowreceivesa$1,500or$3,000grant,dependinguponthelengthofhisorherresidency,andupto$250fortravelexpenses.
