home grounds. We have a number of Wandin Park members repre-
senting our club.
GOODLUCK TO ALL COMPETING
NEXT RALLY......
Sunday 3rd March at Glenbrae Equestrian Centre
Dressage : Alisha Fielmich
Showjumping : Aude McGregor
Bookings are ESSENTIAL!!
For bookings please contact Peta Elstrek ASAP at peta.elstrek@bigpond.com
Rally Booking Procedure
Due to some confusion over the number of ways of booking in for rallies, could requests to the Rally co-
ordinator be by EMAIL ONLY. (Posts to the Wandin Park Facebook page will not accepted)
Rallies are run similar to a competition by requiring
members to book in and pay before the day. This guar-antees your spot in a lesson and far less to worry
about on rally day (forgetting lesson fee etc)

Welcome all to the first newsletter for 2013!!
I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas and new year’s with lots of family, laughs, holidays and plenty of riding!
Having said all that the year certainly is back into full swing with kids back at school, work having returned and the daily grind starting all over again!
We had a great rally to start the year with Adam Benson taking dressage, whilst Aude Macgregor took on the Show Jumping and Cross Country. There was plenty to see and do with the trade stands to wonder through and the Jump club holding their annual competition.
On the 27th January we also held a sausage sizzle at Bunning’s in Bays-water; it was a great day with the Yarra Valley sausages and bread going down a treat with some customers even coming back a 3rd and 4th time! A special mention to Veronica who cut up 20 kilos of onions the night before and they were well and truly gone by early afternoon! Thank you to every-one that helped and came to show your support for the club, we success-fully raised $1,197.00!
We are looking at holding a ‘Dressage Test Workshop’ mid-May with An-nelise Larin. It looks like a fantastic day consisting of:
- Riders ride a Dressage Test at their level
- They have a group tutorial for 10 to 15 mins on parts of their tests that could be improved (involves riding movements from the test)
- Riders ride the test again and get to see the difference in their marks and percentages
A free ½ talk on how to ride better tests is also included over the lunch break.
We are looking at a venue to have it at to make it a real ‘mock test’ to see how to improve all of those outings that can be a little daunting!
TTT’s- I have been able to fill 2 teams for TTT Combined Training, Wandin Park Bring it home and Wandin Park Home run! Good luck to those riding and for those wanting to come and watch it is very close to home, being held at Wandin Park (hence the team names) on the 9th and 10th March! However I am also calling out for members considering riding at the TTT Horse Trials this year, being held at Bulla on the 20th and 21st April! An email will be sent out close to the time but please keep that in mind!
On my front I am very happy with my man as we have made the first steps to finally get back out and about after a few months off, so I am looking forward to the year that is coming and how we will make it the best one yet!
Until next month, have a great month riding and enjoy the weather as much as possible! It will change before we know it! .
Teagen!

It seems a hobby farmer on the city’s outskirts sought council permission to erect a Horse Shel-ter. Permission was denied leading to a typical protracted one sided negotiation with Council. Exasperated the property owner wrote “I suppose you wouldn’t even allow a table and chairs”. “Of course a table and chairs is permissible” replied council.
My Showing Journey by Linda Lewis
Back in August last year I competed in my first ever Show, my horse was not plaited, I couldn't get the white bits white and I was in beige jody's with a club polo on, what a funny site. Since then I have learnt so much in the few shows that I have been to, including soft plaits as apposed to Pony Club bobbles. My last
two adventures out have been very successful, firstly at Whittlesea double chance show where I won the Level 5 high points and my first reserve champ rider ribbon. At my last show Yarck I came second in Smartest on Parade which is by best result in this class, with each show I have gone one ribbon higher so hopefully at Doongala I can get a first. Also at Yarck I got my first ribbon in a led class pretty and brown I
was so excited the girl next to me thought I was crazy :) It's a shame we couldn't get a TTT Showing Team together this year but hopefully my story has inspired you to think about it for next year. Linda

Hi All, I came across this in an article I read a short time ago and thought it would be interesting for members to read, I have shortened it and adapted it to aussie wording for you.
“Loading” I don’t have time for messing around with horses that won’t load. I train them to load any place anytime and that is the end of it, no problem ever again. A poor trainer let’s call her “Wimpy Wendy” can soon “un train” a horse that was previously very easy to load. Let’s say WW decides to try her hand at loading this same horse, she is a bit nerv-ous so approaches the truck/float cautiously making soothing sounds to the horse. The horse notices this different approach and not quite understanding what is required of it hesitates, WW sees the hesitation and incorrectly as-sumes that the horse is frightened of the truck/float, she makes even more soothing sounds and caresses it gently while holding the horse at the bottom of the ramp. The horse now understands that it is being rewarded for stand-ing at the bottom of the ramp so next time it sees the truck it will stop at the bottom of the ramp and expect to be rewarded. When WW gets a little braver she gives a very slight pull on the rope and horse lifts its head and resists at which point WW immediately let’s go of the tension and goes towards the horse to stroke it again. The horse goes back-wards a step and when he finds that this action is also rewarded he offers a few more steps backwards, just at that moment his friends from the field whinny, naturally he answers them and wishes to join them so he turn around and heads off to the paddock. WW only has a soft head collar and lead rope nothing too uncomfortable so he quite easily drags her behind him. WW is now convinced that the horse is “running away” from the scary truck why else would he do this to her when she has been so gentle and kind to him. Having said hello to the horses in the paddock to restore the horses confidence she gets a bucket of food to coax the horse back to the ramp (remember that this is a horse that previously loaded straight away with no hesitation). The horse is coaxed back to the ramp and given lots of feed on the way, it now stands in front of the ramp looking hopefully at the bucket, WW lets the horse finish the food and all the horse has learnt is how far it can stretch with-out putting a single foot on the ramp. WW decides to call it a day and she will continue the lesson tomorrow when she has more time and assures herself that her patience will pay off and the horse will load in a day or two. Next time the horse is lead to the float it stands obediently at the bottom of the ramp awaiting its reward. Eventually it is my job to delve into my bag of training tools and bring out the big guns again, horse runs up the ramp and will continue to load perfectly without any fuss as long as WW is kept out of the way. Loading horses should be about training them to go forwards when they are asked, if the forwards aid is under-stood it makes no difference where or when the aid is applied the horse must respond correctly. One can appreci-ate that this is more difficult in some circumstances but that should not affect the general training process. Go means Go and Stop means Stop. By reinforcing the response to go (or stop) under challenging circumstances the horse will learn the lesson more completely, it is a common training trap to make allowances depending on the cir-cumstances or the environment. For example: If a horse is dragging its owner around the school, barging and kicking out at other horses it is not acceptable to use the excuse “it’s his first time away from home” If you have children and take them to a smart restaurant for the first time do you allow them to run around throw-ing food at the other diners? Do you just smile and say ”he never does this at home” ? So why allow your horse? It is just another training opportunity, yes it will be more challenging to get the correct responses when your horse is distracted by outside stimuli and it is possible that he will behave differently than at home but if you use the situation intelligently to reinforce lessons previously learnt the horse will be better next time. If your aids lack clarity and are inconsistent even a calm horse may become nervous and a frightened horse will become more frightened. A useful quote to consider: EXPECT THE BEST, PREPARE FOR THE WORST AND CAPITALISE ON WHAT COMES It made me think now that I have a new horse who doesn’t always behave in the manner I have become accustomed to! I know, I have been spoilt but am paying for that now. Happy Horsing
