Summer 1

Our story of the week was Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs. We have been dinosaur crazy!

Week beginning: 23rd April 2019

We were welcomed back after the Easter break to find some large foot prints in our classroom leading to the sand tray – who could they belong to?

Some children were brave enough to creep up to the sand tray and lift the lid. To our surprise, we found some large dinosaur bones! We used the brushes to dust off the sand and compared the different sizes. We then used cubes to measure the different sized bones.

We explored mixing colours with rollers, creating our own dinosaur skin.

Week beginning: 29th April 2019 Our story of the week was dinosaurs love underpants.

We found some dinosaurs in our water tray trying to steal our knickers! We used the pegs to hang them on the washing line to make sure they were out of reach!

Today we hopped on the dinosaur’s feet which had the numbers 1-10 on them. We hopped, saying each numeral we landed on, reached 10 and let our biggest and scariest ROAR!

We enjoyed lots of messy play in the dinosaur swamp. The dinosaurs enjoyed playing in the thick oozy mud. “Stomp, stomp, stomp!”

We practised our turn taking skills by playing a memory game where we had to find our dinosaurs the matching pair of underpants.

Week beginning: 7th May 2019

Our story of the week was Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs go to the museum. We had a look at different dinosaur skeletons and fossils. On Tuesday we made our own fossils using salt dough. Have a look!

We met Terry the T-Rex! He showed us all his favourite things such as a ‘bice, sat, mlue’. He was getting confused with his initial sounds so we were kind friends who helped him get the sound correct.

We used interlocking cubes to measure the length of different bones.

After discussing fossils and finding different sized bones, we used the wooden blocks to make our own fossils. It was a good opportunity to practise working in teams and sharing resources.

Week beginning: 13th May 2019

Our story of the week was ‘What the ladybird heard’.

We re-enacted the story in our new role play area, the police station. We were on the hunt for Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len who attempted to steal the fine prize cow! We explored the role and responsibilities of a police officer and talked about doing the right thing and enduring the consequences of our actions.

After finding out about the role and responsibility of a police officer, we decided to explore our finger prints. We used magnifying glasses to zoom in on our finger prints, discussing the similarities and differences.

We rolled the dice and counted out how many spots we needed to put on the ladybird. Some of the children were able to add the counters on each wing of the lady bird and tell us how many there were altogether.

We had lots of fun exploring our mini beast tuff tray. We used the binoculars and magnifying glass to investigate their features further. We also looked at some non fiction books which told us more facts about different creepy crawlies!

We took our mini beast curiosity outside and went on an insect hunt! We explored our garden, bringing our pencils and clipboards with us, ticking off each insect as we found them!

Week beginning: 20th May 2019 Our story of the week was ‘Super Worm!’

After reading Super Worm, we found him and his mini-beasts friends stuck in a trap! We used the tweezers to get them out and set them free!

We have lots of opportunities to work on our fine motor skills, snipping, rolling, squeezing and rubbing our playdough and spaghetti worms! We discussed which worms were shorter, longer, thicker and thinner.

We enjoyed making lots of silly soup this week as our literacy focus was on rhythm and rhyme. We started off making our silly rhyming soup inside and then we found some rhyming objects hiding in our sand tray and made some more during continuous provision. Silly Miss Huey kept putting in words that didn’t rhyme and we had to help here put in the rhyming ingredients such as tree, bee, three and key!

“We are making silly soup, We’re making soup that’s silly, When we cook it in the fridge,It makes it nice and chilly!

Some of the girls were really enjoying mark making with the chalk outside. Some of the boys had equally as much fun using the paintbrushes and water to clean up their work!
