An experienced jeweler can usually see through the hole that crosses a pearl and determine its origin. However, the only sure way to differentiate between Natural and Cultured Pearl is through X-ray
The best imitation pearls are made of glass beads, ceramic or plastic shell covered with a varnish generally made of lacquer and ground fish scales to simulate the iridescence and color of the pearl.
