Study Island Proposal
A PresentationBy
Nikki W. MillerOctober 22, 2008
How Does Study Island Work?
• The program is organized into topics covering all of the objectives with the Standard Course of Study that are tested on the End-of-Grade (EOG/EOC) tests in grades 3 through 8 and high school.
• The academic material is organized in topics which contain a lesson and assessment questions with explanations.
• For each subject (math, reading, and science), the students must take a pre-test, complete all content groups covering all the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, and pass a post-test in order to complete the program.
• Teachers have access to a private page where they can view usage statistics and results for each student, a group of students, and the school as a whole. Additionally, teachers can compare their students’ performance against other students in North Carolina.
Why Does It Work?
• Web-based
• Dynamic Content
• Skills Specific
• Better Than Workbooks
• Question Style Similar to the EOG Test
• Self-Paced
• Multiple Study Modes
• Real-Time Reporting
Web-Based
Because Study Island is completely web based, students can use it at school or home and can study and learn at their own pace. There is no software to download or install; all you need is an internet connection.

Dynamic Content
Not only are there several thousand questions in
the Study Island Program, but each question is
continuously changing position, and the
numbers in the math questions are randomly
chosen. This causes the students to learn the
concepts, not just memorize the answers.
Skills-Specific
Study Island’s lessons and practice tests are
based solely on the North Carolina Standard
course of Study and are specifically designed
to prepare students for the EOG Test. Study
Island covers each and every objective that will
be tested on the EOG Test.
Better Than Workbooks
Study Island offers all the benefits of workbook based programs in addition tothe tremendous benefits that can only beprovided by a Web Based Program. Unlikeworkbooks, Study Island enables studentsto interact with thousands of questions, thenautomatically and instantly grades and records all student work. Additionally, usersare able to print custom workbooks.
Questions Style Similar to EOG
The question style on Study Island is similar to
the style on the actual EOG Test. This allows
students to get comfortable with the testing
style; therefore, the test-taking mistakes will
be reduced and scores will improve.
Self-Paced
Every student learns at a different pace. Study
Island allows the student to learn at their own
pace.
Multiple Study Modes
In addition to allowing students to learn at their
own pace, Study Island lets students choose
their style of learning. Students can choose
between a standard test format and several
interactive games for their study sessions.
Real – Time Reporting
Study Island records statistics for each user
session in a real time report card. Teachers have
access to a private page where they can view
usage statistics and results for each student and
the school as a whole. Real-time reports
(including graphs) help teachers measure
progress and identify deficiencies as they relate
to the specific objective.
Research Equals Results
Evidence of Success: End of Grade Tests
Date of Study: May 2007
Sample: 2006 North Carolina Public Schools not using Study Island vs. 2006 Study Island Schools
Overview of Study
The End of Grade Test (EOG) scores of all public schools throughout North Carolina not using Study Island vs. schools using Study Island for the first time throughout the
2005-2006 school year were analyzed. The EOG is a criterion referenced test given in reading and math at each grade level three through eight. To attain expected growth, North Carolina schools’ average growth must be equal to their growth expectation. The schools that used Study Island came from large and small districts and from urban, suburban, and rural locations. To qualify for the study, Study Island schools must have taken over 470 questions per student.

What Principals Say…
“We are getting connected at my present school even earlier in
the year than at my previous school. It is well worth the cost to
observe students who want to use a program that provides
meaningful learning. We look forward to using Study Island here to
allow our students to practice and receive immediate feedback. I
recommend this program to any school in North Carolina that is
serious about students being able to identify ,practice, and
master reading and math objectives.”
