Located in Shenzhen’s Software Industry Base, Teabank focuses on being a work break go-to space for tech workers in this site, and also a comfortable space that invites to linger. The main issues of the site concerns the diverse group of users and the preservation of a traditional tea business in an urban context.

PENTAGON GRID & THE ORGANIC THEMEPentagons are used to defy the rigid, girdlike context of the site which are mainly office blocks. Attaching them side-to-side, the pentagons form an organic pattern which contrasts against the rigid urban context. The organic growth of pattern is an allusion to the growth of tea plants, which is the core identity of the business.

TRANSITION OF PACEThe programmes within the space dictates a slower pace of life as one approaches deeper, juxtaposing against Shenzhen Industrial District’s fast-moving rhythm of life.

VISUAL CONTINUITY AND PERMEABILITYThe storefront features a long stretch of glass window facade to create a smooth spatial transition from exterior to interior by promoting visual continuity to improve accessibility into space.

The spatial layout of the ground floor is also kept linear and parallel to the field of vision.

SPATIAL LAYOUTCore spaces in a library/teahouse hybrid are the seating zones which accommodate the patrons of the site. To reflect the identity of the business, the seating arrangement is designed in a rather chaotic manner, complimentary to the organic theme.Seating zones are in clusters, albeit accommodating different levels of human density.

Walkways and reading areas are clearly separated due to the linear circulation pattern. This creates an unobstructed view from the entrance to the back of the building, creating a welcoming atmosphere enhanced by the open concept of the shaded backyard.
