Bucknell-GettysburgDigitalScholarshipSummerFellowsMeet-UpSubmittedbyCarriePirmann,SocialSciencesLibrarian,BucknellUniversityWiththesupportofanACLCPShadowingandPeertoPeerSiteVisitationgrant,librariansandstudentsparticipating in Bucknell’s Digital Scholarship Summer Research Fellows (DSSRF) program traveled toGettysburgCollegetovisitourdigitalscholarshippeers.Wewere inspiredtostarttheDSSRFprogramafter seeing librarians and students from Gettysburg and Lafayette present at last year’s BucknellUniversityDigitalScholarshipConference,sothiswasaperfectopportunitytogettoknowGettysburg’sstudentsandfacilitatorsbetter.Inthemorning,wedidaworkshoponelevatorspeeches, ledbyCourtneyPaddick(Arts&HumanitiesLibrarianatBucknell)andClintBaugess(Research&InstructionLibrarianatGettysburg).Thiswasachancefor thestudents toget toknoweachotherandbecome familiarwitheachothers’projects.Wewentthroughtworoundsofelevatorspeeches:oneroundwascraftedasifstudentsweretalkingtoaseniorleveladministrator,andthesecondwascraftedtoanaudienceofeachstudent’schoosing.TheelevatorspeechpracticewoulddefinitelycomeinhandyfortheBucknellstudentslaterintheweek,whentheypresentedtheirprojectstotheVicePresidentofLibraryandInformationTechnology.Fortheafternoonsession,wedidtworoundsofpeerevaluationsandprojectworkshopping.Studentsworkedingroups-oneseniorfellowfromGettysburg,onejuniorfellowfromGettysburg,andonestudentfromBucknell.TheBucknell#dssrf17cohorthadbeenworkingtogethersocloselythatitwassometimesdifficulttostepbackfromtheprojectsandgiveconcrete,constructivefeedback.Havingfreshsetsofeyeson their projectswas enormously helpful to our students, and I know they all came awaywith goodfeedbackandsuggestionsforimprovementsthattheycouldmaketotheirwork.Overall,thisvisitwasagreatexerciseincollaborationandcommunitybuilding.Acommonthemeindigitalhumanitiesanddigitalscholarshipistobuildacommunityofpractice,andthiswasanopportunityforallthe students to see that inactionanddevelop theirowncommunityofpractice.AsKeiraKoch ‘19,aGettysburg DS Senior Fellow remarked, “When the #dssrf17 students were here, it was undergradcollaborationatitsfinest.”
